The SLS Review
For alumni/ae and friends of Elizabeth Seton, South
Hills Catholic and Seton-La Salle Catholic High Schools
VOLUME 1, NO 13 FALL 2009
30 th anniversary a time of change
It is 30 years since the merger of South
Hills Catholic and Elizabeth Seton High
School. Though many traditions at
Seton-La Salle Catholic High School remain
rooted in these two institutions, change is
the constant. In fact, this year alone, it
was easy to name 30 changes that have
happened—or will happen—within the year.
So, in honor of this milestone, here’s a list
of the top 30 recent changes:
1. Phase I of Rebel Athletic Field is
complete. The artificial turf surface helps
prevent injury and the convenience of
having a playing field on campus is priceless.
Join us for a game.
2. SLS is scheduled to renew its accreditation
for the next seven years. Faculty
and administrators are completing the
self-study in preparation for the visitation
team from the Middle States Commission
on Secondary Schools in November.
3. Administrative structure is changing.
Last fall,
Bishop David
Zubik blessed
the newly
renovated
Rebel Athletic
Field and the
students of
Seton-La
Salle High
School. The
project is one
of many
exciting
things
happening at
SLS.
Seton-La Salle’s Board of Directors, in
conjunction with the Members Board of
the Diocese of Pittsburgh, has determined
that a Principal/President model
will enable SLS to grow to its full potential.
This will allow for a distinct division of
responsibility Academic affairs are directed
by the Principal while the non-academic
affairs are directed by the President.
4. Our desks are like new. At the end of
the year all classroom desks will have been
refurbished, making them more durable
and like new at a fraction of the cost.
5. A new class in animation technology
gives students state-of-the-art experience
in virtual reality technology. At the culmination
of this class, SLS will also have a
digital 3-D blueprint of the facility.
6. The gym has been painted, the floors
refinished and new championship banners
have been hung.
2 The SLS Review
From the principal
Irecently talked with my cousin, a graduate of
South Hills Catholic, at a family anniversary
party. He told me he enjoys my letters but
has no money to give. I determined right then
that I had to emphasize the need of our school
for alumni support.
Support can be many things. Yes, it can be money, and that’s
what is needed for tuition assistance. But it can also be prayer. If
God is not behind us, nothing anyone does will work. “If the Lord
does not build the house, in vain do the builders labor.”
Support is also labor. I am impressed by the many parents and
alumni who work on the Auction, at concession stands, selling raffle
tickets, organizing booster events, struggling to pay tuition—all to
enable our students to have the best possible education. In the days
of South Hills Catholic and Elizabeth Seton, tuition was much less, but
for most families it still represented a sacrifice. One of our strongest
supporters now is someone who could not afford to go to SHC and
yet donates generously both money and “in kind” donations.
What can you do? First, I ask everyone to pray. Then if you
can, donate $10, or more if you’re able. If everyone did both, our
tuition fund would be like the baskets of loaves and fishes that
somehow fed the multitudes. Sometimes I wonder if the real miracle
was not that the loaves and fish multiplied but that those in the
crowd were graced to add their lunches to the passing baskets.
If you own or work for a business that can participate in the
EITC program (see article on next page), please do so. Whether
your tax credit is $100 or $100,000, your gift has a huge impact.
You can also help by being a credit to your school. St. Francis
said, “Preach the gospel at all times. If necessary, use words.”
When others see what kind of graduates Seton, South, and Seton-
La Salle alumni are, it strengthens our school.
If you have a willing pair of hands and live close by, we could
use your help with mailings and preparing for the Auction. You may
be able to think of something else you can do, such as coaching
students for the PA Junior Academy of Science. But what everyone
can do is pray. Please help us. And visit. We’d love to see you.
Area business support essential to SLS
The Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania’s Educational
Improvement
Tax Credit (EITC) program,
enacted in 2001, has
become a national
model for tax credit
programs that support
education. It has been
shown to save the state
money and increase
educational opportunity.
Yet, it appears many Pennsylvania
business owners are still not
aware of this highly effective,
low-cost way to ensure that their
tax dollars are used wisely.
“Considering the impact of this
program and the simplicity of the
application process, I find it difficult
to believe that more people
are not utilizing EITC money. We
need to ensure that businesses
use available EITC money to support
Catholic School education,”
said Rex Gatto ‘66.
By participating in
EITC, companies can
take tax credits of up
to 90 percent by
donating to nonprofit
scholarship and educational
improvement
program. SLS is eligible
as a member of
the Pittsburgh Diocese
SOS program.
During the 2008-
09 school year, SLS
students were awarded over
$264,000 in EITC money. Since
2001, more than $1 million in aid
has been awarded to SLS students
through the program. With
tuition currently at $7,345, this
aid is key to building enrollment.
Last year, the total tax credit
The EITC program helps keep enrollment strong.
ennsylvania
saved $531.6
million in the 2007-08
fiscal year, by awarding
44,000 students
EITC scholarships to
attend the school of
their choice.
Andrew T. Lefevre
state expert on school choice
limit available to businesses for the
EITC program increased from
$200,000 to $300,000 per fiscal year.
Recently, the Personal Income
Tax Liability Tax was added as an
eligible business tax, allowing subchapter
S corporations and other
small and medium-sized businesses
to participate.
Every year, our families struggle
to make the life-altering decision
of whether they can afford to
give their children the gift of
Catholic education. With minimal
financial impact on
their business, participants
can greatly
impact the future of
Catholic education.
The Pittsburgh
Diocese’ SOS
Scholarship Fund is
the easiest way for
businesses to contribute
to Seton-La
Salle. Just select the
SOS Fund and earmark
SLS. You can also earmark
SLS through the SLS through the
Bravo and Bridge Foundations. If
your business is eligible, please
consider this very effective way to
support SLS. They are your
taxes, make them count! To learn
New Lettermen Club celebrates past while supporting future
On April 25, 2009 South Hills Catholic, Elizabeth
Seton and Seton-La Salle alumni joined Tom
Donahoe ‘65 to kick off the Rebel Lettermen’s Club on
the new turf at Rebel Athletic Field. The Club’s goal—to
foster lifelong relationships among SHC, ES and SLS
High Schools while supporting the current needs of the
athletic and band programs—drew wide support from
many notable alumni athletes.
Many past and current coaches were on hand to
enjoy the grilled top choice steaks, liquid refreshments
and lifelong memories. While alumni enjoyed
seeing old teammates and sharing the past, they
agreed they want to help continue the “Tradition of
Excellence” of the schools. Thanks go to the Club
Reunion News
Reunion planning is easy
Reunions are a great way
to network and enjoy
memories of high school
days. With minimal effort,
you can have a great event!
It is time for graduation years
ending in ‘0’ and ‘5’ to start
planning. Your reunion could
be a brunch, a ‘smoker,’ a formal
dinner, a night out at a
pub or a day at SLS. We will
work with you to create the
event you envision.
The assumption is often
that class officers begin the
process, but that is rarely the
case. Anyone can plan their
reunion, and SLS will make it
easy for you to do. Call Amy
Private scholarships grow and continue impact
Last year, the SLS Review
reported that private
scholarships provide
about $90,000 in student aid
annually. That amount ended
up being considerably off the
mark because two new onetime
awards and three scholarships
were not in the tally.
Officially for the 2008-09
school year, $131,161 in private
scholarships was awarded
to SLS students.
The 2009 Merrick Scholarship was awarded to Robert
Beck and Eric Mascaro flanked by finalists Lindsay
Matesic and Kathryn Bench. Dr. Judy Merrick (l) and
Sister Patricia Laffey (r) presented the awards.
The newest scholarship is the Mary Ann Gargani Scholarship, created
by John Gargani ‘82, to honor his mother, a longtime SLS math
teacher. Four other scholarships were established earlier in the year: The
St. Francis Academy Alumnae Association Scholarship, the Ray &
Gail Kennedy Memorial Scholarship, the Sisters of Charity of Seton
Hill Scholarship and the Anthony O’Toole/King O’Toole Scholarship.
Sister Patricia Laffey noted, “The wonderful thing about these
scholarships is that they uniquely honor and meet the wishes of individuals
while helping a diverse and growing number of worthy SLS students.”
Honorary Scholarship
Theodore “Ted” White • 1937 - 2009
On May 12, 2009 Seton-La Salle lost a lifetime
friend and talented teacher. Theodore
“Ted” White was a well-known Pittsburgh
actor with the Civic Light Opera in the late ‘60s and
early ‘70s. Yet, ask anyone who attended South
Hills Catholic or Seton-La Salle in the 60’s through
the 90’s, and they’ll tell you Ted’s work in the auditorium,
classroom and halls of SLS outshone
any on-stage performance. Ted spent 40
years as teacher at South Hills Catholic
and Seton-La Salle and was drama
director for 20 years.
Stephen Flaherty ‘78, now a
Tony-award-winning Broadway
composer, said “He was incredibly
inspirational to me. He made us all
believe in our own potential. Without
his encouragement, I wouldn’t have
pursued a career in theater as a
composer.” (Post Gazette 5/15/09)
Maria Alsatti, an Elizabeth Seton
alumna who performed in SHC
musicals and has since starred in opera productions
around the world, agreed. “He inspired me because
of his love of what he did. He pulled the very best
out of everyone he worked with,” she said.
Some former students sent emails; others posted
comments on the SLS alumni Facebook page. At a
memorial mass on June 3, 2009 held in one of Ted’s
favorite places—the SLS auditorium—several
alumni commented that they still remembered—verbatim—the
Shakespearean sonnets
Mr. White required them to memorize in
English class.
Ted also knew the importance of keeping
SLS alumni in touch with each other and
the school. He was the first development
director and established the first alumni
office at SLS in the early ‘80s. Thanks to
his efforts and commitment to the SLS
community, no matter whether we are
students, parents, alumni, or simply
appreciate the arts, Ted has touched
our lives.
Alumni auction off their expertise at Green & Gold Gala
Every year, the Green & Gold
Gala offers an elegant
evening of great
food, friendships and
fundraising. And,
every year guests bid
on wonderful gifts
found nowhere else.
Once-in-a-lifetime
trips, private dinners
and exclusive tickets
are commonly up for
bid. This year, thanks
to the creative energy
of chairs, Suzanne
and Joe Aiello (both Class of 1982
alumni), the Gala will offer something
even more unusual: Alumni
Shadowing.
The Aiellos contacted several
alumni and received an overwhelmingly
positive response
(Would you expect anything
else?) when they asked Kristen
Abbott ‘93 (Vice President,
Corporate Sponsorship, Bank of
New York Mellon), Michael Lamb
Mrs. Bruce bids fond farewell
After 39 years at South Hills
Catholic and Seton-La Salle
High School, I decided it was
time to retire. This place has always
been like a second family to me.
The Christian Brothers, Sisters of
Charity, lay faculty, students and all
the wonderful people I have met over the years have
been part of my extended family. When I interviewed
for secretary to the Guidance Counselor, Mr.
Yannone, I had never used an electric typewriter.
Now, I use computers, email, etc. and feel I have
learned so much.
I watched the school being built in the mid-60s
knowing my three sons would soon attend: Paul ‘62,
Patrick ‘66, Philip ‘68. My daughter Nancy attended
Fontbonne Academy and was one of the first SHC
cheerleaders. I attended football and basektball
games, chaperoned a trip to Europe and many trips
will get these opportunities.
Kristen Abbott was thrilled
to participate. “I think that this is
hugely creative, and a potential
asset to the SLS students,” she
replied. It’s the perfect gift for
that SLS student looking forward
to college and career. The list of
participants continues to grow!
A letter by Mrs. Lucy Bruce, SLS secretary, 1970-2009
to NYC with Mr. Manear and members of the senior
class. These are among my many fond memories.
Prior to being an employee, I was a member of
the Parents Club and helped plan and raise funds
with card parties and dances with live bands in the
gym. I served as President of the Mothers’ Club and
worked with many wonderful parents—all dedicated
to succeed in whatever was planned.
I enjoy reading and hearing about so many of
our successful former students and the many good
deeds they have performed. It makes me proud...as
if I were their parent.
To say I won’t miss my time at SLS would be a
lie. I plan to volunteer and stop by from time to
time. Now, however, I think it is time to have some
time of my own. To all of you—administrators, faculty,
staff, students and alumni whom I have known
and loved over the years—please wish me well and
God Bless all of you.

In these tough
economic
times, our families
are struggling
more than
ever to pay for
Catholic education.
Some of our
Marilyn Walsh
Director of
Development
alumni have also been affected
by the economic slump so are
unable to give as much. Your
donation is more important than
ever.
With the financial support of
alumni, parents, friends and
business partners, we can continue
to provide excellent educational
opportunities for the
young people of the South Hills
of Pittsburgh. We have done so
for 30 years as Seton-La Salle,
and for more than another quarter
century before that as
Elizabeth Seton and South Hills
Catholic. Please help us continue
this important tradition.
I encourage you to support
SLS in any way you can. As the
only Catholic high school in our
area, Seton-La Salle is in a
unique position to contribute to
this community. Our students
are given the opportunity to
learn and prepare for adulthood
in an environment where morals,
faith and conscience are freely
discussed. It’s an opportunity
you, as alumni, once had. Yet,
with escalating costs, it becomes
more difficult for the average
family to afford. With your help,
we can continue to open our
doors to all who want a Catholic
education.
With sincere gratitude,
T uition is currently set at
$7,345 per year for Catholic
students, in line with other
Catholic High Schools in the
region, and considerably more
affordable than other private
educational alternatives. Yet, for
many families, SLS would be economically
impossible without the
financial assistance provided
through charitable gifts, scholarships,
in-kind donations and other
contributions.
The school’s total operational
expenses in 2008-09 exceeded
$3.7 million; tuition and fees in
the amount of $3.39 million were
collected. Donations make up the
difference. Unfortunately this
year, gifts to the Annual Fund
were down nearly 23 percent.
This was partially due to a
decrease in corporate matching
gift program participation, but it
was also due to decreased numbers
of donors. The Annual
Green & Gold Gala helped offset
the difference with nearly a 10
percent increase from the previous
year. Also helping to offset
the decrease in donations is an
increase in business participation
in EITC and the establishment of
a handful of new privately funded
scholarships. To keep tuition
affordable, SLS strives to control
costs and continually increase
giving. We ask you to help by
contributing in any way you can.
Remember, it isn’t the
amount of your gift that matters.
With 10,000 alumni, even the
smallest gift can make a difference.
Help to continue the legacy
of SLS.
Please continue to give,
whether online, using the
enclosed envelope, or by calling
Matching Gifts
The following businesses and
the alumni and friends who
work with them are an important
asset to SLS. In fiscal year
2008-09, matching gifts provided
an additional $9,700.
Although down by about 25
percent from the previous year,
matching gifts remain an important
aspect of our efforts. If
your employer offers a matching
gift program, please take
advantage of this opportunity to
increase your gift to SLS.
Continuing the Legacy 2009-10 Annual Fund
Amy Ganser ‘90
Development
Are you keeping in touch?
High school is the time when many of us develop
life-long friendships—the kind not affected by life
status or distance. With the art of letter writing
drawing its last breaths, it seems everyone is turning
to email to keep in touch with friends. The popularity
of Facebook among the over-30 demographic is
growing exponentially with each old friend we find.
Yes, it may be true that communicating via email
and websites isn’t as personal as letters and phone calls yet, because
of technology, I am “talking” with more former classmates on a regular
basis than I ever thought possible.
Still, there is no substitute for those face to face meetings, and
hearing “You haven’t changed a bit.” Some classes have reunions
every year, or at least every five years; others haven’t gotten together
as a group since the day they graduated. If there’s one thing I have
heard at every reunion I have attended in the last few years, it’s this:
“We should get together more often.” Then a mad scramble ensues to
gather business cards and email addresses.
I know there are smaller groups of friends who have been able to
stay in touch and have found some really creative ways to correspond
with each other and get together between reunions. I want to write
an article for the Spring ‘10 SLS Review sharing your stories.
Whether you hold monthly happy hours, annual lunches during the
Christmas season, or weekly web-chats, please send me an email at
gansera@slshs.org and tell me how you have been able to keep in
touch with your high school friends. Who knows, your ideas might
inspire someone else to get the “old gang” back together!
Sincerely,
