Berlin Black
Featuring several known faces of the UK scene, Berlin Black is the brainchild of Chris
Tuke, formerly of Screaming Banshee Aircrew. Formed in 2008 and mixing elements
of glam, new wave, post punk and just the right amount of sleaze to create that 'trash
vogue' sound.
Cryogenica
Cryogenica is a London-based, electro-rock band formed in 2006 whose music has
been compared to ‘Curve, Siouxsie and the Banshees & Nine Inch Nails’. Comprising
of: Carina - vocals and keyboards, Jon - guitar, keyboards and samples, and Scott –
guitar, they have adopted a guitar-centred approach towards electronic music
production and performance. Using Ableton Live sample based software run from a
laptop to trigger samples, drum loops and bass synths, they aim to provide a full
sonic experience to their live shows by mixing ambient samples using Ableton’s Live
FX in between songs during their live sets.
Devilish Presley
Devilish Presley was formed as a two-piece by Jacqui Vixen and Johnny
Navarro in 2003 and were soon adopted by the UK Goth scene with their
albums Rust Garden and Disgraceland – but they very quickly widened their
appeal. Johnny was chosen as back-up guitar player by Meteors frontman
P. Paul Fenech and toured Europe with him on a number of solo dates. It
was the band’s unique ability to cross over between genres that helped
create their critically acclaimed albums and saw them become the support
act on nineteen dates with The Damned in 2008.
The Mist Of Avalon
Founded as a classic Goth rock band back in the 90s, The Mist Of
Avalon have built up quite a reputation during the last 15 years
successfully casting off any genre bonds, though of course a lot of
original Goth elements are still there. Singer Aram Yildiz’s flexible
voice is capable of mastering both dark, screaming and very
melodious parts, and supported by subtly applied female background
vocals on their recordings, songs like ‘I Wish’ grow into energetic indie
wave pop hymns which show similarities to bands like A-Ha or the
Chameleons. Their most recent album ‘Dinya’ offers soulful, driving
and fresh indie wave rock with an undertone of a deep and sometimes
gloomy melancholy far away from any artificial depression.
Abney Park
Abney Park (who take their name from Abney Park Cemetery
in London) is a band based in Seattle that mixes elements of
industrial dance, world music, and Steampunk in their work.
Formerly a Goth band, Abney Park has transformed their look
and sound and has come to be known by many as the
‘quintessential’ Steampunk band. In early 2006, Abney Park
transformed themselves from a largely Goth industrial band
into a Steampunk band, and as part of that transformation,
Abney Park invented fictional identities of themselves. Since
Steampunk is largely derived from science fiction and fantasy
literature, the band also created a fictional back-story to
explain the shake-up in membership and who they were now,
and to set a stage for their new music. According to that
story, the band's plane collided with a time-travelling
dirigible called the Ophelia in a freak storm. The band
commandeered the vessel, deciding to become airship pirates, and formed a new band from the surviving
members of the crash. Much of their music since that time has been based around this fictional back-story.
event - BAND biographies
The Death Notes
The Death Notes are a female fronted alternative rock band from Nottingham,
England. The bands first release was a self titled 5 track EP on Sonic Disruptor
Records released in October 2009. ‘Sweeping the Nation’ described the bands sound
as ‘Siouxsie Sioux fronting the Horrors’ elsewhere the bands sound has been
compared with Joy Division, The Pixies, Sonic Youth and Warpaint.
The Dark Shadows
Having just released their new single, 'Written In The Snow', The Dark Shadows
will soon be launching a new EP, '11:11' at Whitby Goth Weekend. After the
haunting atmospherics of the 'Invisible' EP, '11:11' sees the band develop this
theme and explore a fresh, sharp edged new sound, combined with post-punk
noir wave.
Rhombus
Rhombus are one of the finest Goth Rock bands to emerge
from the North of England in many years. Mixing male and
female vocals with swirling guitars and driving bass, they
combine some of the best elements of traditional 80s & 90s UK
Goth, with a more modern approach. Their songs are well
crafted and catchy, possessing both depth and a sharp sense
of humour.
Chameleons Vox
The Chameleons are arguably the most widely influential
guitar band ever to come out of Manchester, England,
and Chameleons Vox is the continuation of the band
featuring vocalist and principle composer Mark Burgess
and drummer John Lever. The band released their first
album 'Script of the Bridge’ in 1983, following their
debut single ‘In Shreds’ and several radio sessions for
the BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel. The album is considered
by a great many to be a masterpiece, and songs from
that and later albums form the basis of their set. They
are now reaching a whole new generation of fans to
swell the considerable loyal following that the band has
established, and over the last two years have played sell
out concerts in the UK, Germany, Holland, Greece, Italy,
Spain and Portugal. The Chameleons are back, sounding
bigger and better than ever!
Voltaire
Voltaire is often described as a modern day renaissance man. As a
musician, he is a songwriter whose music can best be described as a
collection of murder ballads, tongue-in-cheek exercises in the macabre,
with just enough bawdy songs about Star Trek and Star Wars to keep a
convention audience rolling in the aisles. Voltaire's live shows, whether
solo or with his skeletal orchestra, are full of stories and games. Many
describe his shows as sitting around a fire while an old friend regales
you with tales, presuming that old friend drinks a litre of rum a night,
dates zombie prostitutes and wrestles Krakens. Voltaire has been
recording and touring for over 15 years. He's released 8 full length CDs,
most of them through Projekt Records.
