<strong>Quick</strong>-<strong>Start</strong> <strong>Guide</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>MSN</strong> <strong>Program</strong><br />
This comprehensive guide <strong>to</strong> applying <strong>to</strong> the <strong>MSN</strong> program at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mississippi</strong> Medical Center School <strong>of</strong> Nursing<br />
contains links <strong>to</strong> websites, admission informa� on and useful contacts.<br />
Step 1: Review the application deadlines, admission criteria and program start dates.<br />
Access http://son.umc.edu/apply/. The master’s and post-master’s degree programs <strong>of</strong>fer continuous enrollment,<br />
meaning that there are spring, summer and fall start dates. (Please note: The nurse practitioner tracks may be <strong>of</strong>fered<br />
only during select semesters.)<br />
Deadlines: Spring admission: Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 15 • Summer admission: February 15 • Fall admission: March 31<br />
Step 2: Do you know which program and track you want <strong>to</strong> pursue?<br />
• If yes, skip <strong>to</strong> next step.<br />
• If no, schedule <strong>to</strong> speak with a recruiter or program direc<strong>to</strong>r before advancing <strong>to</strong> next step.<br />

Step 3: Go <strong>to</strong> http://son.umc.edu/apply/ and click on “Apply Online” <strong>to</strong> get started.<br />
If you encounter any problems with the online application, please contact the Office <strong>of</strong> Student Records and Registrar,<br />

Step 4: Request <strong>of</strong>ficial transcripts.<br />
Contact each community college or university attended and request that your transcripts be sent <strong>to</strong>:<br />

If you need help finding your school’s link, try Googling with search terms reflecting your school, location and the word<br />
“transcript”. (For example, “Hinds Community College Jackson, MS transcript”.)<br />
Step 5: Secure the e-mail addresses <strong>of</strong> three individuals willing <strong>to</strong><br />
provide a recommendation.<br />
Examples for references include a past/present supervisor, pr<strong>of</strong>essional colleague, academic dean and/or instruc<strong>to</strong>r. Further<br />
instructions are included in the online application.
Step 6: Are you a registered nurse?<br />
• If yes, obtain evidence <strong>of</strong> current unrestricted licensure (RN) <strong>to</strong> practice in the United States.<br />
• If no, be aware that new graduates must pass the NCLEX ® during the first semester <strong>of</strong> coursework.<br />
Print a validation document from your state board <strong>of</strong> nursing website. For <strong>Mississippi</strong>, visit https://www.ms.gov/msbn/<br />
InquiryInformation.do. If you will have clinical practice in a state where you are not currently licensed, obtain evidence <strong>of</strong><br />
eligibility for licensure or privilege <strong>to</strong> practice in this state.<br />
Step 7: Prepare for and take the GRE ®.<br />
• Access http://etsis4.ets.org/tcenter/tcenter.jsp or Google “GRE ® test site” <strong>to</strong> find a local test center.<br />
• Google “GRE ® prep” for a list <strong>of</strong> resources, or visit your local or online books<strong>to</strong>re.<br />
Step 8: After taking the GRE ®, check your test results. Are they competitive?<br />
• If yes, go <strong>to</strong> next step.<br />
• If no, schedule <strong>to</strong> retake the test.<br />
The GRE ® testing program allows individuals <strong>to</strong> retake one section, two sections or the entire test. If you have questions about<br />
competitive GRE ® scores, please contact a track direc<strong>to</strong>r or the student recruiter.<br />
Note: The Registrar’s <strong>of</strong>fice requires a paper copy <strong>of</strong> test results, and scores take several weeks <strong>to</strong> be received from the<br />
Educational Testing Service.<br />
Step 9: Check your e-mail regularly.<br />
Respond promptly if alerted that an item needs attention. If your e-mail address or mailing address changes, be sure <strong>to</strong><br />
notify the Registrar’s <strong>of</strong>fice. Students typically are notified <strong>of</strong> their acceptance within three weeks following the application<br />
deadline.<br />
Step 10: Complete the application process.<br />
• Did you finish the online application, including payment <strong>of</strong> the $25 application fee?<br />
• Did you submit your <strong>of</strong>ficial GRE ® scores?<br />
• Please note: All materials � transcripts, recommendations, test scores and the application � must be received by the<br />
application deadline.<br />
Although the Registrar’s <strong>of</strong>fice checks for completeness, it is the applicant’s responsibility <strong>to</strong> ensure that the application is<br />

Step 11: If requested, attend an interview and complete a criminal background check.<br />
Students, who are accepted in<strong>to</strong> the program, must successfully complete these requirements prior <strong>to</strong> final acceptance.<br />
