LENTEN REGULATIONS 2013
Each year the holy season of Lent provides us a special time of grace and
spiritual renewal so that we may become better instruments in sharing the
Gospel message.
This year, Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, falls on February 13, 2013.
The present laws of the Church regarding fast and abstinence during the
Season of Lent are as follows:
1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast. On days of fast, one
full meal is allowed. Two lesser meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be
taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another
full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted. This law binds Catholics who
have completed their 18th year until the beginning of their 60 th year.
2. Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence.
On days of abstinence, meats should not be taken at any meal. The law of
abstinence binds all Catholics who have completed their 14 th year.
The Obligation to observe, as a whole, or “substantially,” the penitential days
specified by the Church is a serious obligation. The New Code of Canon Law
states:
“On these days (of Penance), the faithful are in a special manner to
devote themselves to prayer, to engage in works of piety and charity, to
deny themselves, by fulfilling their obligations more faithfully and
especially by observing the fast and abstinence…”
May this Holy Lenten season provide us an opportunity for deepening our faith,
hope, and love through a life of deeper prayer, penitential practices, and works
of charity.

LOOK WHAT THE CAT DRAGGED IN -- A Message
from St. Peter's New Administrator Pro Tem:
No one is more surprised than I, but after a very brief
consultation, Bishop Robert Guglielmone appointed me to
this post effective February 1. It will probably continue
through the month of July, after which a real, permanent
pastor will be named for this wonderful parish. I retired a
year and a half ago after almost 17 years as pastor of St.
James in Conway and Resurrection Mission in Loris. I
have lived a very happily active retirement, assisting in
parishes as needed, preaching on weekends around the
country for the Christian Foundation for Children and
Aging (I was here for that purpose in January of 2011),
doing some writing, and traveling. My calendar looks
almost as crowded as when I was a full-time pastor. That
is why I thought I was not a good choice for St. Peter's --
my commitments through July are many. However, the
Bishop felt it could work, with the generous assistance of
Father Bernard and other area priests, and the continued
service of the outstanding parish staff already in place.
So I said yes. I apologize in advance that you will seem to
see so little of me, especially on weekends. I will serve
here when I can, from a distance at other times, and
always in contact with Deacon Ron Anderson and the
staff. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible
-- some time down the line! Let us pray for each other.

WOMEN'S NIGHT OUT LENTEN SERVICE
The Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality will be having a Women's
Night Out Lenten Service on Tuesday, March 12th (PLEASE
NOTE NEW DATE) at 6 p.m. Sister Nancy Hendershot will
be the guest speaker. Her theme for the evening will be:
Jesus lived and died so that we might have life. Let us live
fully! A light supper will be served. All women of the parish

CATHOLICISM SERIES CONTINUES…
Feb 20/27 the topic will be Word Made Flesh, True Bread
of Heaven- The Mystery of the Liturgy and the Eucharist. Fr.
Barron explores the notion that “all value is summed up in
the liturgy, the supreme act by which we commune with
God.” Considered by the Catholic Faith to be the “source and
summit” of its identity and mission, the Eucharist is the
central practice of the Church’s culture. Join us Wednesday

Join us this Lent as we explore....
Father Robert Barron paints a beautiful
and mysterious image of what it takes to
be a follower of, the One who is, Jesus
Christ. He lays out three intriguing paths
to holiness: Finding the Center;
Knowing You're a Sinner; and Realizing Your Life is Not
About You. Untold Blessing is an insightful guide for
meditation as you walk in the Way. This study will begin
with an Introduction Tuesday, February 12th at 9:00 AM
and continue each week through March 27th.

SAINT PETER'S SCHOOL NEWS
“It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things,
endures all things. Love never fails.
So faith, hope, love remain: but the greatest of these is
love.” (1Corinthians)
These beautiful words are fitting for the month of
February. I am continuously impressed by the many acts of
kindness and expressions of love I see around me; a parent
who makes it a point to remember faculty and staff’s
birthdays, teachers who share resources and support each
other in their instruction, a student who asks for the prayers
of his classmates for a sick relative, and the many volunteers
who generously give of themselves. These are all expressions
of love that cultivate a community of care at St. Peter’s
School.
Our service project for this month will focus on
supporting the Wounded Warrior Project. Students in the
5th and 2 nd grades have organized a walk-a-thon for all of the
classes to participate in during their PE class. Students will
be collecting pledges and donations to send to this important
program.
The love of the Arts will be evident at the
“Celebration of the Arts”, February 16 and 17. We have a
talented group of students who will be sharing their gifts in
the form of drama, dance, and music. This is a fundraiser for
the 6 th grade trip to Washington, DC. Tickets can be
purchased in the school office.
The end of this month the faculty and staff look
forward to attending the Diocesan Teacher Education
Conference. This gathering includes celebrating Mass with
Bishop Guglielmone, a keynote address by Rev. Patrick
Tuttle, OFM, recognition of service to the Diocese, and a
wonderful opportunity for professional development.

CRS Rice Bowl brings
Lent to life.
CRS Rice Bowl is a Lenten faith formation program that helps
us to live in solidarity with the poor and vulnerable around
the world. The Disciplines of Lent call us to:
� pray to reflect on what type of person we
are called to be.
� fast to remove the things that get between
us and God, and to remember those without
enough to eat.
� give to honor Jesus’ call to serve those in
need.
Our parish will be participating in CRS Rice Bowl, Catholic
Relief Services’ Lenten program, as a way to encounter Jesus
through others, especially through the most vulnerable in
our world. Rice Bowls will be available on Ash Wednesday,
February 13 th. Please be sure to take one home and use the
easy and fun resources to deepen your family’s Lenten
experience. Your prayers, fasting and almsgiving this Lenten
season will help Catholic Relief Services continue to provide
life-saving assistance in nearly 100 countries. CRS works on
our behalf to care for the poorest in our world and to end
global poverty. Let what you give up for Lent change not only
your life; let it change the lives of others! WHAT YOU GIVE
UP FOR LENT CHANGES LIVES.
FAITH FORMATION NEWS
Religious Education, Confirmation and Youth Ministry will
not meet for their regular class session on Wednesday,
February 13th. Children and youth should attend Ash
Wednesday services with their families. Mass begins at 6:30
PM.
Confirmation youth will be assisting with the 6:30 p.m. Ash
Wednesday Mass. Please be at the Church by 6:15 p.m.

RCIA: AN INVITATION TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE

SOUPER BOWL COLLECTION RESULTS
ARE IN….
DRUM ROLLLLLL please….
an AMAZING $1,327.28 was collected! Youth Ministry wants
to thank YOU for your generosity. The youth have decided to
send funds to: SisterCare and St. Clare’s Home of Joyful
Hope.
Sistercare is a program of services for battered women and
their children residing in Fairfield, Kershaw, Lexington,
Newberry and Richland counties. Our donation will help
Sistercare to continue to provide resources such as
emergency shelter for women and children, counseling
services, community education and awareness, and court
advocacy to name a few.
St. Clare’s Home of Joyful Hope is an outreach of the
Diocese of Charleston. This home will be located in the
Greenville area and is the first of several planned in our
Diocese. St. Clare’s Home will be a place where expectant
mothers can live and gain life skills while they are pregnant
and for some time after giving birth. One of the reasons that
abortion is chosen instead of the life of the baby is there are
so few active alternatives for women who are facing an
unexpected and, sometimes, unwelcomed pregnancy. By
providing a safe, loving and accepting environment for
expected mothers we are not only advocating for the sanctity
of life but we are empowering and enabling women to
choose LIFE.
FAITH AND FINANCE
As Valentine’s Day approaches, it’s a reminder of the
importance of couples developing the unity described in
Genesis 2:24 in their marriages. When it comes to money,
couples best do this by growing as stewards of Providence,
communicating with each other about their most important
goals for life, and developing financial plans that support
their goals..

HANG YOUR CLOTHES OUT TO DRY: Here's something you
can do that is easy, practical, and won't cost a penny to
implement. In fact, it will save you money! No matter where
you live, the sun has to come out eventually. When it does
hang your clothes out to dry. Of course, there are days where
drying outdoors is not practical. That's fine. Use your dryer.

Cardinal Newman School invites you to participate
in our Ash Wednesday Mass, which will be held at noon on
February 13, 2013 in our Gymnasium.
Our school will be closed to students on Friday,
February 15, 2013 for a Teacher In-service. Cardinal
Newman will be closed to everyone on Monday, February 18,
2013 in observance of President’s Day.

Zahuta will celebrate the Mass in Polish. All are welcome. A
covered dish dinner will follow the Mass, so please bring

DID YOU KNOW?
� Our Dioceses provided over 330 students
with financial aid in the form of grants from the BAA.
� Each year over 1,000 youth participate in diocesan youth
events from National Evangelization Team, Youth Rally for
Life, Catholic Leadership Institute (CLI), and more.
� Hiring of Young Adult Coordinator
� Hiring of Hispanic Youth Ministry Director and search
underway for Director of Hispanic Ministry
� Through the BAA we are supporting 11 seminarians this
year with tuition, room/board, and a monthly stipend. Four
ordinations occurred in 2011, one in 2012 and one planned
for 2013. A full- time Vicar for Vocations with increased
promotion.
� We have a catholic presence on 20 colleges and
universities throughout our state.
� We are supporting 21 retired priests on the current priest
pension plan.
� Clean of Heart program in Columbia serves over 100
homeless men and women per month to provide a place to
shower and clean their clothes
� There are over 100 active deacons serving in our diocese
and an additional 56 men currently entered in the diaconate
formation program.
Over 330 tuition assistance grants were awarded to
students attending the following schools with funds raised
from the 2012 Bishop’s Annual Appeal and the St. Elizabeth
Anne Seton Tuition Assistance Endowment:
