copper which was <strong>on</strong>ly 105 thousand t<strong>on</strong>nes in 2003 increased to 236 thousand<br />

t<strong>on</strong>nes in 2006 and came down to 185 thousand t<strong>on</strong>nes in 2009. The main<br />

destinati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>Indian</strong> copper alloys were mainly to China (36%) was followed<br />

by Saudi Arabia 17%. Besides, 27 thousand t<strong>on</strong>nes <strong>of</strong> copper ores &<br />

c<strong>on</strong>centrates was also exported mainly to Germany, and China. A small<br />

quantity <strong>of</strong> cement copper (precipitated) was also exported. India also exports<br />

copper scrap and scrap <strong>of</strong> brass and br<strong>on</strong>ze.<br />

4.5.2 Imports<br />

India is <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> the major importers <strong>of</strong> copper ores & c<strong>on</strong>centrates. India<br />

imported 1.91 milli<strong>on</strong> t<strong>on</strong>nes <strong>of</strong> copper ores & c<strong>on</strong>centrates in 2007-08 but in<br />

the year 2008-09 the imports were increased to 2.26 milli<strong>on</strong> t<strong>on</strong>nes. The major<br />

countries from which India imports copper ores and c<strong>on</strong>centrates are Chile,<br />

Australia, Ind<strong>on</strong>esia, Brazil, Iran etc. India imported 633 thousand t<strong>on</strong>nes <strong>of</strong><br />

copper ores & c<strong>on</strong>centrates from Chile, c<strong>on</strong>tributing 28% to the total <strong>Indian</strong><br />

imports followed by Australia (22%) and Ind<strong>on</strong>esia (8%). The India’s imports<br />

<strong>of</strong> refined copper stood at 15,496 t<strong>on</strong>nes in 2009 which decreased from 15,744<br />

t<strong>on</strong>nes in 2008. In the 2008-09, India also imported 23,245 t<strong>on</strong>nes <strong>of</strong> copper<br />

scrap, 321 t<strong>on</strong>nes <strong>of</strong> cement copper precipitated.<br />

4.6 EXPORT- IMPORT POLICY:<br />

The export import (Exim) policy <strong>of</strong> copper metal is decided by the Ministry <strong>of</strong><br />

commerce, Government <strong>of</strong> India. The gist <strong>of</strong> the policy is given below.<br />

4.6.1 Export Policy<br />

As per the export policy 2009-14 <strong>Copper</strong>/lead/zinc metal and their alloys<br />

are freely exportable without c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

4.4.2 Import policy:<br />

The import policy for years 2009-14 is given in Table: 4.4.<br />
