about 70%. Therefore the producti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary copper by the copper scrap<br />
etc. processors comes out to be 33924 t<strong>on</strong>nes/year as shown in following Table:<br />

In additi<strong>on</strong> to the sec<strong>on</strong>dary producti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> copper by the copper re-processors<br />
there are units which recover sec<strong>on</strong>dary copper al<strong>on</strong>g with other metals.<br />
As per the discussi<strong>on</strong>s in field as menti<strong>on</strong>ed above that <strong>on</strong>ly 40% <strong>of</strong> these units<br />
are in operati<strong>on</strong>s and the capacity utilizati<strong>on</strong> by these units is about 50%. As copper<br />
is <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> the metal recovered al<strong>on</strong>g with other metals such as zinc, nickel etc. the<br />
recovery factor <strong>of</strong> copper is taken as 30%. Based <strong>on</strong> these factors, the producti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
sec<strong>on</strong>dary copper by the processors <strong>of</strong> other n<strong>on</strong>-ferrous metals and waste has been<br />
calculated. The producti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary copper thus arrived at 31051 t<strong>on</strong>nes per year<br />
as shown in the Table: 3.10.<br />

3.4.2 Apparent Producti<strong>on</strong><br />
In view <strong>of</strong> the above discussi<strong>on</strong> the total sec<strong>on</strong>dary copper producti<strong>on</strong><br />
by copper re-processors and other n<strong>on</strong>-ferrous metals and waste re-processors is<br />
arrived at 64,975 t<strong>on</strong>nes/year.<br />
The producti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> virgin a primary copper cathodes during 2008-09 was<br />
502,081 t<strong>on</strong>nes in comparis<strong>on</strong> to 64,975 t<strong>on</strong>nes <strong>of</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary copper producti<strong>on</strong><br />
which is about 13% <strong>of</strong> the primary producti<strong>on</strong>.<br />
<strong>Copper</strong> is am<strong>on</strong>g the most efficiently recycled material in global<br />
commerce, China being the leader in the scrap utilisati<strong>on</strong>. It is 100 percent<br />
recyclable without any loss in performance if properly refined. As per<br />
