In earlier chapter it has already been described that there is a producti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

sec<strong>on</strong>dary copper from scrap to a tune <strong>of</strong> 20% <strong>of</strong> the total primary producti<strong>on</strong> and by<br />

adding 20% <strong>of</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary producti<strong>on</strong> with the primary producti<strong>on</strong> an apparent<br />

producti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> 312 thousand t<strong>on</strong>nes was estimated in 2000-01 which reached to 639<br />

thousand t<strong>on</strong>nes in 2009-10.<br />

It has been presumed that this trend <strong>of</strong> 20% <strong>of</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary producti<strong>on</strong> will<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tinue till 2013-14. However, it has also been estimated that there will be increased<br />

availability <strong>of</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary copper hence the percentage <strong>of</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dary copper producti<strong>on</strong><br />

has been increased to 30% till 2018-19 and 40% till 2024-25. The same has been<br />

given in Table-6.6. It is seen from the table that the total producti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> copper in<br />

2024-25 will be 2851 thousand t<strong>on</strong>nes.<br />

6.3 DEMAND SUPPLY ANALYSIS<br />

The future demand <strong>of</strong> copper is envisaged at 2.3 milli<strong>on</strong> t<strong>on</strong>nes in 2024-25.<br />

This is c<strong>on</strong>sidered keeping in view the sectoral break up <strong>of</strong> future demand which is<br />

more realistic as compared to CAGR and projected GDP growth.<br />

To fulfill the demand the producti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> copper is also projected with due<br />

justificati<strong>on</strong>. The projected producti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> copper in 2024-25 comes to 2.8 milli<strong>on</strong><br />

t<strong>on</strong>nes. This includes the producti<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tributed by sec<strong>on</strong>dary source in additi<strong>on</strong> to<br />

primary. The primary producti<strong>on</strong> will c<strong>on</strong>tribute 2.0 milli<strong>on</strong> t<strong>on</strong>nes whereas<br />

sec<strong>on</strong>dary producti<strong>on</strong> will be 0.85 milli<strong>on</strong> t<strong>on</strong>nes. This is justifiable producti<strong>on</strong> which<br />

will meet the future demand.<br />
