Parham and J. J. Jourdan were arrested for “the commission <strong>of</strong> an<br />

unnatural <strong>of</strong>fense,” or sodomy, but that Parham would fight the<br />

charge and that he attributed the numerous stories <strong>of</strong> his alleged<br />

immoral conduct to the anti-Pentecostal followers <strong>of</strong> Dowie in<br />

Sarah Parham wrote, “One day I received word that he had<br />

been arrested while preaching but some <strong>of</strong> his true friends had<br />

immediately came [sic] to his release and he continued the<br />

meeting. The city attorney told him that he would not have to<br />

appear, because he (the attorney) would not even call the case<br />

for trial for he ‘was satisfied it was all spite work.’ I was with<br />

him in Texas, at the date set in the indictment, but the case was<br />

never called, the prosecuting attorney declaring that there was<br />

absolutely no evidence which merited any legal recognition.”<br />
