A <strong>History</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Christian</strong> <strong>Doctrine</strong><br />

denominations yet fostered cooperation on many endeavors.<br />

Some have dissolved, others have remained as fellowships<br />

<strong>of</strong> independent churches, and some have<br />

evolved into the equivalent <strong>of</strong> denominations.<br />

Examples <strong>of</strong> such networks, with founders and leaders,<br />

are as follows: National Leadership Conference (Ken<br />

Sumrall and Gerald Derstine); People <strong>of</strong> Destiny<br />

International (Larry Tomczak and C. J. Mahaney);<br />

Maranatha <strong>Christian</strong> Churches (Bob Weiner); Fellowship<br />

<strong>of</strong> Covenant Ministers and Conferences (Charles<br />

Simpson); Network <strong>of</strong> <strong>Christian</strong> Ministries (Charles<br />

Green); International Convention <strong>of</strong> Faith Ministries<br />

(Happy Caldwell); Charismatic Bible Ministries (Oral<br />

Roberts); Victory Ministry Fellowship (Billy Joe<br />

Dougherty); Church on the Rock (Larry Lea);<br />

International Communion <strong>of</strong> Charismatic Churches (John<br />

Meares and Earl Paulk); and Global <strong>Christian</strong> Network<br />

(ex-UPCI ministers).<br />

4. Third Wave, or Signs and Wonders Movement.<br />

C. Peter Wagner (born 1930), a church growth specialist,<br />

coined the name “Third Wave” to refer to Evangelicals<br />

who do not want to be identified as Pentecostal (the first<br />

wave) or Charismatic (the second wave) but who seek<br />

miracles, healings, and other “power” encounters with<br />

God. Most <strong>of</strong> them do not speak in tongues. Those who<br />

do, generally do not publicize or emphasize this experience.<br />

The Third Wave adherents seek to retain Evangelical<br />

theology. Thus they do not speak <strong>of</strong> the baptism <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Holy Spirit as a distinct experience but consider that they<br />

have had it all along as part <strong>of</strong> their conversion. They simply<br />

learned to “release” or “manifest” miraculous gifts <strong>of</strong><br />
