A <strong>History</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Christian</strong> <strong>Doctrine</strong><br />

Apostolic Faith identified the following seven teachings<br />

as “the principles <strong>of</strong> the doctrine <strong>of</strong> Christ”: 17<br />

1. Repentance.<br />

2. Faith in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.<br />

3. Water baptism.<br />

4. Sanctification.<br />

5. The baptism with the Holy Spirit.<br />

6. Second coming <strong>of</strong> our Lord Jesus Christ.<br />

7. Final white throne judgment.<br />

The original statement <strong>of</strong> faith published by the mission<br />

listed and discussed six topics: repentance, faith, justification,<br />

sanctification, the baptism with the Holy Ghost,<br />

and healing. Three <strong>of</strong> them were distinct crisis experiences<br />

with God and part <strong>of</strong> full salvation: 18<br />

First Work.—Justification is that act <strong>of</strong> God’s free<br />

grace by which we receive remission <strong>of</strong> sins. Acts<br />

10:42, 43. Rom. 3:25.<br />

Second Work.—Sanctification is the second work<br />

<strong>of</strong> grace and the last work <strong>of</strong> grace. Sanctification is<br />

that act <strong>of</strong> God’s free grace by which He makes us<br />

holy. . . . Sanctification is cleansing to make holy. . . .<br />

The Baptism with the Holy Ghost is a gift <strong>of</strong><br />

power upon the sanctified life; so when we get it we<br />

have the same evidence as the Disciples received on<br />

the Day <strong>of</strong> Pentecost (Acts 2:3, 4), in speaking in new<br />

tongues.<br />

While the Azusa Street participants considered that a<br />

person was “saved” by the “first work” <strong>of</strong> grace, before<br />
