The Healing Revival and the Latter Rain<br />

1951. William Upshaw, a U.S. congressman from<br />

California who had been crippled for many years, was<br />

healed in one <strong>of</strong> Branham’s campaigns. This notable<br />

event catapulted Branham to international fame.<br />

Branham had an unusual ability to discern people’s<br />

illnesses. He would call them out <strong>of</strong> the audience, reveal<br />

details about them, inspire their faith, and pray for their<br />

healing. Many people were healed. Walter Hollenweger,<br />

who later became the secretary <strong>of</strong> evangelism for the<br />

World Council <strong>of</strong> Churches, gave the following description<br />

and analysis: 273<br />

The angel gave him signs to help him in his task.<br />

The most important was Branham’s ability to name<br />

with astonishing accuracy the sickness, and <strong>of</strong>ten also<br />

the hidden sins, <strong>of</strong> people whom he had never seen.<br />

The author, who knew Branham personally and interpreted<br />

for him in Zurich, is not aware <strong>of</strong> any case in<br />

which he was mistaken in the <strong>of</strong>ten detailed statements<br />

he made. It was characteristic <strong>of</strong> Branham’s<br />

kind-heartedness that he gave certain personal revelations<br />

to those who were seeking healing in a whisper,<br />

so that they were not picked up by the<br />

microphone and revealed to the spectators. . . .<br />

Much that was written about him in Pentecostal<br />

journals seems to be exaggerated, but there are a number<br />

<strong>of</strong> well-attested cases <strong>of</strong> miraculous healings. . . .<br />

However generously he is judged, it must be<br />

admitted that his sermons were not merely simple,<br />

but <strong>of</strong>ten naïve as well, and that by contrast to what<br />

he claimed, only a small percentage <strong>of</strong> those who<br />

sought healing were in fact healed. The Pentecostal<br />
