The Healing Revival and the Latter Rain<br />

instantaneous experience. Others held that if someone<br />

had enough faith to be saved then he had enough faith to<br />

be healed. The corollary was that if a person did not<br />

receive healing then his salvation was also questionable.<br />

Some rejected all use <strong>of</strong> medicine and doctors, saying it<br />

was contrary to faith.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the most famous healing preachers was John<br />

Alexander Dowie, whose ministry reached its apex from<br />

1894 to 1905. From Australia, he immigrated to the<br />

United States and attracted a national following. As we<br />

noted in chapter 1, he founded his own denomination (the<br />

<strong>Christian</strong> Catholic Church) and his own town (Zion,<br />

Illinois).<br />

Many early Pentecostal leaders received inspiration<br />

from Dowie. Before the Pentecostal movement began in<br />

1901, Charles Parham visited Dowie’s operation and<br />

learned from his methods. In 1906, Parham brought the<br />

Pentecostal message to Zion and converted many <strong>of</strong><br />

Dowie’s followers to the new movement. A number <strong>of</strong><br />

them became Pentecostal leaders, including L. C. Hall,<br />

D. C. O. Opperman, John Lake, and F. F. Bosworth. Lake<br />

and Bosworth were noted for their healing ministry as<br />

Pentecostals. The parents <strong>of</strong> Gordon Lindsay, who was to<br />

figure prominently in the post-war healing revival, were<br />

also followers <strong>of</strong> Dowie.<br />

Parham preached healing before the outpouring <strong>of</strong><br />

the Holy Ghost came. Afterwards, he continued to<br />

emphasize healing, and some <strong>of</strong> his early breakthroughs<br />

came as a result <strong>of</strong> dramatic healings. Some well-known<br />

Holiness healing preachers entered the Pentecostal<br />

movement, including Carrie Judd Montgomery and Maria<br />

Woodworth-Etter. Other well-known healing campaigners<br />
