missioned the Gallup organization to survey college students.<br />

The survey included students from 100 U.S. colleges,<br />

and almost 99 percent <strong>of</strong> them were unmarried. Here are<br />

the results (in <strong>Christian</strong>ity Today, 14 July 1989):<br />

• who believe premarital sex is<br />

• who have sex regularly or<br />

occasionally 50% 28%<br />

• who have had more than one<br />

sex partner 50% 30%<br />

• who believe abortion is wrong 37% 71%<br />

• <strong>of</strong> women who have had<br />

abortions 9% 4%<br />

• <strong>of</strong> men with partners who have<br />

had abortions 15% 6%<br />

Again the negative results for Evangelicals are significantly<br />

lower than for the general population, but in absolute<br />

terms they are still quite high. Clearly, the secular society is<br />

having a significant impact upon Evangelical youth.<br />

In 1990, the Barna Research Group conducted a survey<br />

<strong>of</strong> the general U.S. population to see how many people<br />

considered themselves to be “born again” (a simple<br />

indication <strong>of</strong> Evangelicalism) and how many had an<br />

Evangelical view <strong>of</strong> salvation. Here are the results: 249<br />

• 34% <strong>of</strong> American adults considered themselves<br />

born again.<br />

• 62% <strong>of</strong> the respondents said they had made a personal<br />

commitment to Jesus Christ, but about half<br />
