Fundamentalism and<br />

Evangelicalism<br />

In the early twentieth century, conservative<br />

Protestants began to rally against Liberalism<br />

(Modernism) and its higher criticism <strong>of</strong> the Bible. They<br />

defended a traditional understanding <strong>of</strong> the Bible and<br />

affirmed fundamental doctrines that <strong>Christian</strong>s <strong>of</strong> all<br />

branches had held over the centuries. They also stood<br />

against Darwinian evolution and Marxist socialism.<br />

The Fundamentalists<br />

From 1910 to 1915 prominent conservative<br />

Protestant scholars wrote a series <strong>of</strong> twelve pamphlets<br />

called The Fundamentals, which defended key doctrines<br />

that were under attack. The result was a new movement<br />

called Fundamentalism. Of course, the basic doctrines<br />
