today become a sea <strong>of</strong> Pentecostal believers. . . . Perhaps the<br />

two most important spiritualities which formed the originators<br />

<strong>of</strong> Pentecostalism [were] Wesleyan and African-<br />

American.” 182<br />

Significant Changes<br />

In recent decades, the Pentecostal movement has<br />

undergone significant changes away from its roots, particularly<br />

among the Second Work Trinitarians and<br />

Finished Work Trinitarians. The most important change<br />

concerns the baptism <strong>of</strong> the Holy Spirit.<br />

First, the initial evidence doctrine is increasingly<br />

under attack. Some indigenous churches in Europe and<br />

Latin America have departed from this teaching, and the<br />

Charismatic movement does not generally adhere to it.<br />

(See chapter 10.) Even in the classical Pentecostal<br />

denominations that affirm this doctrine, many theologians<br />

and ministers now question or deny it.<br />

In a related development, the number <strong>of</strong> members<br />

who receive the Holy Spirit with the sign <strong>of</strong> tongues has<br />

steadily declined. Overall, it is estimated that only 35 percent<br />

<strong>of</strong> the members <strong>of</strong> classical Pentecostal denominations<br />

have received this experience, 183 and in the<br />

Charismatic movement the percentage is far less. In the<br />

Assemblies <strong>of</strong> God, the number is estimated at 30 percent<br />

(by some scholars) to 50 percent (by denominational<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficials). The AG has established a commission to investigate<br />

this problem and propose remedies.<br />

As we have noted, there has also been a significant<br />

departure from practical expressions <strong>of</strong> holiness in<br />

lifestyle, dress, and amusements. Many countercultural<br />

beliefs and practices, such as pacifism and foot washing,<br />
