A <strong>History</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Christian</strong> <strong>Doctrine</strong><br />

God (35,000), whose founder, William Phillips, also<br />

taught that blacks are descendants <strong>of</strong> the Jews.<br />

The Church <strong>of</strong> God (Apostolic) (31,000) also teaches<br />

the second blessing. It began as a Holiness church in 1897<br />

and adopted Oneness Pentecostal views around 1915.<br />

Several other small Oneness bodies, mostly <strong>of</strong>fshoots<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Church <strong>of</strong> God in Christ, also teach sanctification<br />

as a second work. The largest group that apparently has<br />

such roots is the Original Glorious Churches <strong>of</strong> God in<br />

Christ Apostolic Faith (30,000).<br />

In addition to the larger Oneness organizations, there<br />

are hundreds <strong>of</strong> small groups and independent works.<br />

There are Oneness sabbatarians groups and sacred name<br />

(Yahweh) adherents.<br />

Many <strong>of</strong> the smaller groups and independent ministers<br />

are part <strong>of</strong> the Apostolic World <strong>Christian</strong><br />

Fellowship (AWCF), an umbrella association that <strong>of</strong>fers<br />

recognition to everyone who identifies with the plan <strong>of</strong><br />

salvation according to Acts 2:38. It does not screen candidates<br />

or discipline members, but its purpose is to provide<br />

identification and fellowship. Its founder, Worthy<br />

Rowe, is the son <strong>of</strong> a Oneness pioneer, G. B. Rowe, who<br />

left the UPCI over the “Adam doctrine.” He held that as to<br />

His humanity, Jesus was the reincarnation <strong>of</strong> Adam. For<br />

this reason, the UPCI has not associated with the AWCF,<br />

but it has sought one-on-one fellowship with other major<br />

Oneness organizations.<br />
