Forget the resolution…
Did you make a resolution to get fit
and lose weight? Forget it! Instead,
start a revolution – a health revolution!
Fitness isn’t a goal – it’s a way of life. A
resolution is merely a decision to change
something; a revolution is a complete
system change. A true commitment to
fitness and health should be a revolution.
Let me offer the following advice about
staging your own personal fitness
revolution:
1. set reasonable goals. Want to
lose 50 pounds and drop 5 dress
sizes? Great! Will you accomplish
that by summer? Maybe. A lofty
goal can be intimidating and seem
unachievable. Instead of tackling the
entire goal, chip away at it. Shoot to
lose 10 pounds in 2 months. Setting
and achieving numerous goals
encourages you to continue your
revolution.
2. take baby steps.
• Exercise: If you aren’t physically
active, start small or you will end-up
discouraged or possibly injured. Go
for a brisk walk, hit the elliptical, or
do an entry-level group class. Once
that becomes easy, add another
component. If you are active, add
variety. Trying something new
avoids boredom and works different
muscles, so your body more actively
burns calories. Kettlebells are a
great addition to any fitness plan!
• Diet: I hate the “d-word” - it
implies deprivation. Think of
healthy meal plans instead: limit
carbohydrates and make vegetables
½ of your daily food intake. Think
first: how much workout time
start a Revolution!
will that cookie cost? Opt for a
smoothie, apple, or carrots instead.
3. find a partner. People who
workout with a friend are more
dedicated and have more fun.
Meeting a friend at the gym
is motivational, offers friendly
competition, and provides an ally to
share your success.
4. there is no one-size-fits-all
weight-loss solution. Media is
littered with weight-loss success
stories. Harness the motivation, but
don’t get hooked in. Do research
– what’s it cost? How much work
is involved? Do you have support?
Does it fit your lifestyle? Just
because the latest fad diet worked
for a friend, doesn’t mean it will
work for you. Most important
– don’t sacrifice your health and
nutrition.
5. track your progress. Take
measurements and before/
during/after photos. It’s not
easy – after all, who wants to
take a photo when you know
you’re overweight and out of
shape? Re-take measurements
and analyze your progress once a
month. It’s so rewarding to look
back and track your progress
as you proceed towards your
goals. Each month’s improvement
is a successful battle in your
revolution.
6. don’t let a setback become
a habit. So you went to Vegas
for the weekend and gained a
couple pounds. Big deal – we’re
all human! Just don’t allow this
break to become an excuse to
continue with bad habits. Get back
to healthy eating and exercise right
away.
7. have fun! Find something you
truly love and you won’t see it as
work!
You are doing this for yourself. We often
put ourselves last, but making a change
for a healthier lifestyle not only rewards
you, it also benefits your family and
friends.
Vive la revolution!
Services
protect your hoMe — by
protecting your blue cart
The City of Calgary’s household recycling
program uses large, wheeled blue carts
for weekly recycling material pick-up.
These can contain easily combustible
materials such as paper and cardboard,
along with potentially valuable items such
as refundable containers and documents with your personal
information.
The Calgary Police Service offers these tips to keep your blue
cart — and your home — from becoming a target for vandals
or thieves.
• Keep your blue cart in your garage whenever it’s not out
for recycling pickup. Leaving it in the alley or on your
driveway can make your cart a target.
• Take refundable containers such as pop cans to bottle
depots. If these containers are left in blue carts, they
encourage people to go through the blue cart contents,
which can lead to littering and vandalism. Refundable
containers also attract undesirable bottle pickers to your
community.
• If you don’t find recycling depots convenient, you may
also consider donating your refundable containers to local
bottle drives, or simply dropping the containers off at a
bottle depot. Many depots have a bin for donations and
the money collected goes to charitable organizations.
• Don’t put hazardous materials such as solvents or batteries
in your blue cart, as these can endanger City staff and
damage equipment during recycling pickup and processing.
For a convenient list of blue cart materials, and options for
non-recyclable material, check The City of Calgary website
at www.calgary.ca or call 3-1-1.
• Shred all documents that contain personal information
such as bills, bank statements, receipts, etc, and place
them in a clear plastic bag before disposing of them in your
blue cart.
• If your blue cart is vandalized, please report it to the
Pet Talk With Dr. Lori Keeler
Weight Matters
As more people battle with their own weight issues, furry
housemates increasingly struggle alongside them. Data from
the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention indicate that over
half of all dogs and cats are overweight or obese. “Obese” is
defined as 30% above normal weight. This means a cat with
a normal weight of 8 lbs for its body size is obese if it weighs
10.5lbs - that is only 2.5 lbs!!!
One hurdle: people’s idea of what constitutes a fat pet often
differs from clinical reality. A study by Pfizer Inc.’s Animal
Health business showed that 47% of veterinarians felt their
canine patients were obese, while only 17% of dog owners
agreed. For instance, a 90-pound female Labrador retriever
is roughly equivalent to a 186-pound woman who is 5-foot,
4-inches tall—a human body-mass index that’s considered
obese.
The main culprit: owners who routinely overfeed pets, don’t
exercise them enough and are unaware of the severe, and
costly, health problems caused by excess weight. Common
woes include diabetes, arthritis, kidney failure, high blood
pressure and cancer. Research also suggests that pets fed
less over their lifetime can live significantly longer.
Knowing how much to feed your pet can be confusing.
Manufacturers are not required to list the calorie content
of their foods on labels, feeding directions are listed for
the “most demanding” life stage for which the product is
intended, such as reproduction. Subsequently you could
be overfeeding your pet by 25% or more by following the
feeding quidelines on the bag.
The pet industry is eager to help - there are dog treadmills,
boot camps for obese dogs, dog walkers to take your pet
for extra exercise and numerous toys and gadgets to get
your feline friends moving around the house.
What should an owner do? First of all, have your veterinarian
assess your pets body condition and overall health. Just as
in people, your obese pet should never enter a weight loss
program without the consent of their doctor. Call us today
for a weight assessment 403-278-9311.
