YOUR LETTERS BI-ANNUAL NEWSLETTER Dear Editor, Alyth Youth Partnership would like to take this opportunity to tell you what has been happening since January 2003. There are numerous clubs affiliated to the Alyth Youth Partnership, all of which are attended by Young People in Alyth and the surrounding area. Alyth Youth Partnership has been working to hard to bring more activities and provide more opportunities to the Young People by liaising with other organisations within Perth and Kinross and Tayside. The Youth Clubs is where it all started. Still running on a Monday and Tuesday night the club offers the Young People a place to meet their friends, play pool, access the Internet and access information a range of topics from Alcohol and Drugs issues to Sexual Health issues and Careers abroad and in the United Kingdom to name but a few. Occasionally a guest speaker will visit the Youth Club to inform, educate and entertain the Young People on their specialist subject. Recently we have had the pleasure of a Drugs Worker from Perth & Kinross Alcohol and Substance Misuse Team, and a Health Worker from Tayside Health Board. The introduction of healthy eating will start in early June. This will include pasta, noodles and baked potatoes with a range of fillings to encourage the Young People away from chocolate and crisps. Although the chocolate and crisps will be available to satisfy the sweet tooth. The Youth Clubs will continue to run on a Monday evening 7.30pm until 9.00pm for P7 - 2nd year, and Tuesday evening 7.30pm – 9.00pm for 3rd year – 17years old. 18 years and over will be considered volunteers and will be subject to a Police Check in line with Child Protection Guidelines. Alyth Boys Football has got off to a flying start. Held at the Diamond Jubilee Park and run by Rab Ross on a Tuesday evening 6.00pm – 8.00pm for 14years and under and Thursday evening 6.00pm – 8.00pm for 15years – 18years. The cost is 50p which will go towards equipment and trips to league and competition games. A unique opportunity for Young People to advance their football skills and hopefully progress onto Alyth Amateurs or even further. The training evenings are well attended and regularly see 15+ on each session with numbers on the increase. Alyth Youth Partnership has provided funding for team football strips which will get their first showing at a competition held in Dundee over the 5th and 6th of July 2003. SERVICES REQUIRED Do you know anyone in the area who sharpens garden tools? Please get in touch with the Voice– so we can pass on their number to all those gardeners in Alyth who require this service. Is there something you need fixed or serviced but can’t find anyone in the area to do it? Let us know and we will ask our readers for help. 3 Alyth Skate Solution has continued to move from strength to strength and foundations have been laid (literally). Held on a Tuesday evening from 5.00pm – 6.00pm at the Alyth Community Wing. This collective of Young People came together to form a working body with the hope of getting a skateboard/ BMX facility in Alyth. Thanks to their hard work through a fund raising Rock Gig in Blairgowrie Town Hall and sponsored Bike Ride through the hills to Bridge of Lintrathen and back to Alyth they have managed to raise funds to realise their dream. As a result trenches have been dug and cement laid in the Diamond Jubilee Park to accommodate the Half-pipe which has been gifted by Perth & Kinross Council. Public meetings are held by the ASS and your support would be appreciated, so keep an eye out for advertising posters. Also many thanks to the surrounding Business for their donations and continued support. The skaters look forward to having the ramp in place by the end of the summer holidays. Alyth Girls Group is held on Tuesday evenings 6.30pm – 8.00pm at the Alyth Community Wing. Run by Lynn Mac- Intyre the club aims to provide fun and entertaining activities such as Internet access, arts and crafts and rounders. There is also the opportunity for field trips away skating, swimming and the cinema. There has also been the suggestion of the Girls Group helping to build a sensory garden for the local school. Thrillseekers has now finished for the summer. Run in Partnership with the Blairgowrie Police Force, Alyth Youth Partnership sits on the Thrillseekers Management Committee and has also provided many of the instructors who attend the club regularly. Football, Basketball, Badminton, Trampoline and Body Combat are some of the activities which are available. There has also been the Outdoor Sports Activities which have been run in conjunction with the Compass Christian Center at Glenshee. Hugely successful with Gorge Walking, Crate Climbing and Problem Solving Activities to name a few. Thrillseekers will be resurrected in September when the schools start for the new term, watch out for details. Field Trips always attract good support. Alyth Youth Partnership aims to provide its activities with little or no cost to the Young People or their Parents. Recent trips have included the Dynamic Earth Exhibition at Edinburgh. This exhibition was an informative event outlining the beginning of the universe right up to social-economic problems caused by modern technology. Fortunately it is very well presented and very easy to understand otherwise it would have been very dull. Fake earth tremors, cold rooms with small glaciers and tropical rain forest simulations added to the interactive environment. McDonalds was also well received on the way home. Dear Editor, I am compelled to email after reading Daniel Dewar's' wonderful pieces of work. I am more than delighted Alyth houses these wonderful people, with both talent and enthusiasm for life! I now wonder what other gems are hiding amongst us? - and hope, like the Dewar's, that they express their voices and talents, and enhance the Alyth, we know and love!
