ALYTH IN BLOOM
GETS TOGETHER WITH
PRIMARY ONE
Primary One pupils at Alyth Primary School have helped instal three
tubs with flowers in the school entry area as part of their environmental
studies project in the community.
There was specialist help and guidance from members of the Alyth in
Bloom committee, Chairman Marguerite McKenzie, Lorna Phillips,
and Margaret Aitchison accompanied the class teacher Sandra Heap,
nursery nurse Lesley McKay, and pupils to Sim’s Garden Center to
buy tubs and plants to decorate the area.
The area was given a pressure wash by Steven Gamlen and Crawford
McDonald of Tayside Pressure Washers (Blairgowrie) based at
Skirmie Park.
The pupils now look after the tubs, weeding and watering as required,
and were on hand to meet Alyth in bloom members last week. 1
“The Lollipop Lasses”
of Alyth
The spotlight this month falls on two special ladies- Ruth
and Morna who have the responsibility of school “safe crossing”
patrol for over 250 of our younger generation (and at times
the parents or grandparents)
Ruth has been 11 years in the job and is now seeing secondgeneration
pupils. She wouldn’t commit herself to say whether
this generation are better behaved than their parents!!!
Morna has been “on patrol” for 5 years and like Ruth thoroughly
enjoys the job, and feels it is very rewarding.
They both agreed most motorists are very considerate but there is
always room for improvement!
At summer holiday time the primary 7’s are moving on to High
School and saying their goodbyes and we are sure they appreciated
being taken care of whilst crossing the road to and from
school by Ruth and Morna, they along with all the other pupils
NEW VENTURE FOR ALYTH MAN
NEED YOUR WHEELIE BIN CLEANED?
I would like to bring to the attention of all local townsfolk, my
intention to start up my own business. You may have had me on
your doorstep looking for your support, but obviously time has
been very limited in getting this venture up and running and so
therefore I am appealing through Alyth Voice for your loyalty
and support.
I intend to start up my business cleaning and then sterilising your
dustbin with disinfectant, on a regular basis. The cost to yourself
would be £1.50 per dust bin with a special rate of £1.00 for old
age pensioners. Your bin could be cleaned weekly: fortnightly:
or monthly, or by arrangement. I hope to start my daily rounds
at the beginning of July. I would appreciate your support and
would ask you to call for a suitable time to provide you with my
services. Or further information contact Jimmy Young

YOUR LETTERS
BI-ANNUAL NEWSLETTER
Dear Editor,
Alyth Youth Partnership would like to take this opportunity to
tell you what has been happening since January 2003.
There are numerous clubs affiliated to the Alyth Youth Partnership,
all of which are attended by Young People in Alyth and
the surrounding area. Alyth Youth Partnership has been working
to hard to bring more activities and provide more opportunities
to the Young People by liaising with other organisations
within Perth and Kinross and Tayside.
The Youth Clubs is where it all started. Still running on a
Monday and Tuesday night the club offers the Young People a
place to meet their friends, play pool, access the Internet and
access information a range of topics from Alcohol and Drugs
issues to Sexual Health issues and Careers abroad and in the
United Kingdom to name but a few. Occasionally a guest
speaker will visit the Youth Club to inform, educate and entertain
the Young People on their specialist subject. Recently we
have had the pleasure of a Drugs Worker from Perth & Kinross
Alcohol and Substance Misuse Team, and a Health Worker
from Tayside Health Board.
The introduction of healthy eating will start in early June. This
will include pasta, noodles and baked potatoes with a range of
fillings to encourage the Young People away from chocolate
and crisps. Although the chocolate and crisps will be available
to satisfy the sweet tooth.
The Youth Clubs will continue to run on a Monday evening
7.30pm until 9.00pm for P7 - 2nd year, and Tuesday evening
7.30pm – 9.00pm for 3rd year – 17years old. 18 years and
over will be considered volunteers and will be subject to a Police
Check in line with Child Protection Guidelines.
Alyth Boys Football has got off to a flying start. Held at the
Diamond Jubilee Park and run by Rab Ross on a Tuesday
evening 6.00pm – 8.00pm for 14years and under and Thursday
evening 6.00pm – 8.00pm for 15years – 18years. The
cost is 50p which will go towards equipment and trips to league
and competition games. A unique opportunity for Young People
to advance their football skills and hopefully progress onto
Alyth Amateurs or even further. The training evenings are well
attended and regularly see 15+ on each session with numbers on
the increase. Alyth Youth Partnership has provided funding for
team football strips which will get their first showing at a competition
held in Dundee over the 5th and 6th of July 2003.
SERVICES REQUIRED
Do you know anyone in the area who sharpens garden tools?
Please get in touch with the Voice– so we can pass on their
number to all those gardeners in Alyth who require this service.
Is there something you need fixed or serviced but can’t find
anyone in the area to do it?
Let us know and we will ask our readers for help.
3
Alyth Skate Solution has continued to move from strength to
strength and foundations have been laid (literally). Held on a
Tuesday evening from 5.00pm – 6.00pm at the Alyth Community
Wing. This collective of Young People came together
to form a working body with the hope of getting a skateboard/
BMX facility in Alyth. Thanks to their hard work through a
fund raising Rock Gig in Blairgowrie Town Hall and sponsored
Bike Ride through the hills to Bridge of Lintrathen and
back to Alyth they have managed to raise funds to realise their
dream. As a result trenches have been dug and cement laid in
the Diamond Jubilee Park to accommodate the Half-pipe
which has been gifted by Perth & Kinross Council. Public
meetings are held by the ASS and your support would be appreciated,
so keep an eye out for advertising posters. Also
many thanks to the surrounding Business for their donations
and continued support. The skaters look forward to having the
ramp in place by the end of the summer holidays.
Alyth Girls Group is held on Tuesday evenings 6.30pm –
8.00pm at the Alyth Community Wing. Run by Lynn Mac-
Intyre the club aims to provide fun and entertaining activities
such as Internet access, arts and crafts and rounders. There is
also the opportunity for field trips away skating, swimming
and the cinema. There has also been the suggestion of the
Girls Group helping to build a sensory garden for the local
school.
Thrillseekers has now finished for the summer. Run in Partnership
with the Blairgowrie Police Force, Alyth Youth Partnership
sits on the Thrillseekers Management Committee and
has also provided many of the instructors who attend the club
regularly. Football, Basketball, Badminton, Trampoline and
Body Combat are some of the activities which are available.
There has also been the Outdoor Sports Activities which have
been run in conjunction with the Compass Christian Center at
Glenshee. Hugely successful with Gorge Walking, Crate
Climbing and Problem Solving Activities to name a few.
Thrillseekers will be resurrected in September when the
schools start for the new term, watch out for details.
Field Trips always attract good support. Alyth Youth Partnership
aims to provide its activities with little or no cost to the
Young People or their Parents. Recent trips have included the
Dynamic Earth Exhibition at Edinburgh. This exhibition was
an informative event outlining the beginning of the universe
right up to social-economic problems caused by modern technology.
Fortunately it is very well presented and very easy to
understand otherwise it would have been very dull. Fake earth
tremors, cold rooms with small glaciers and tropical rain forest
simulations added to the interactive environment. McDonalds
was also well received on the way home.
Dear Editor,
I am compelled to email after reading Daniel Dewar's' wonderful
pieces of work. I am more than delighted Alyth houses these
wonderful people, with both talent and enthusiasm for life!
I now wonder what other gems are hiding amongst us? - and
hope, like the Dewar's, that they express their voices and talents,
and enhance the Alyth, we know and love!
Congratulations, and may you inspire others Mr Dewar!
Yours Joyfully and Dramatically!
Ashley Kennedy
TEDDY COMES TO ALYTH
FOR HIS SUMMER
HOLIDAYS ON HIS
“LOTTERY” WIN
Alyth is a small country town in Strathmore on the highland fault
line, situated near the Perthshire /Angus boundary, it is 17 miles
north of Dundee and 22 miles north east of Perth and it nestles below
the Alyth Hill. It is believed Alyth was founded around 1000
A.D. as possibly the place where drovers drove their cattle over the
river, now called the Alyth Burn, and thence on to the bigger towns
to be sold at markets. It has grown over the last millennium into the
charming town it is today with the Alyth Burn, with its trout and
sometimes salmon in it, bisecting the town with the lovely Market
Square next to it with the lovely trees, flowers and seats.
Alyth is in the centre of a very active farming area which has barley,
oil seed rape, potatoes and raspberries as the main crops.
Alyth has a population of approximately 2,500 people, its own primary
school, post office, shops, fire station, doctors surgery, library,
garages, hotels and bed & breakfast establishments.
It is a good centre for golf courses (3 ½ courses within one mile of
the town centre), walkers ( see Walk Auld Alyth & Walk Alyth
& Beyond) The Den, Alyth Hill, fishers (rivers, Loch of Lintrathen
and the Backwater Dam ), bowlers ( Alyth Bowling & Tennis
club), bird watchers (with Kinnordy, Loch of the Lowes, Drumore
and Loch of Lintrathen all within 15 miles) historians ( with The
Auld Arches site of a 13 th century church, Packmans Bridge built
around 1500 A.D., birth place of James Sandy (1766-
1819)”inventor of genius” the father of the Laurencekirk Snuff Box
and the Alyth Museum which houses, historic farm implements and
items from the past. It is no surprise that Teddy wants to have his
summer holidays here after his “Lottery” win!
As a regular passenger on the bus both
to Dundee and Perth, I am appalled at
the lack of consideration by car drivers
parking around Alyth Square and Airlie
Street.
Reflect for a few
moments, the size
of these buses, the
route they need to
negotiate every
hour they enter
Alyth Square.
These buses need a large turning area
off the main street and immediately
need to straighten up so they can
squeeze thought a gap flanked by cars,
vans and four wheel drives either side of
the road, followed by a tight turn to the
bus shelter trying to avoid dozy pedestrians
who insist on standing on the edge
of the pavement, not allowing the bus to
swing round safely into position.
On leaving the square the driver then has
to drive the obstacle course of abandoned
cars down Airlie Street.
For several months I have been observing
the parking around the square,
Particularly at the time the bus arrives–
with more than half the spaces empty in
the parking bays it occurs to me that
laziness is uppermost as most vehicle
owners jump out of their cars and rush
over to “Sims” or the “Bank”, a few
extra paces would solve this nightmare
for these very skilled bus drivers who
must dread this journey several times a
day.
So vehicle owners, don’t hold up your
arms in horror and scream and shout if
TEDDY’S TEDDY BEARS TRAIL
The Teddy Bears Trail is sponsored
by Alyth & District Business Association
and is a competition that has
been designed for the young and the
young at heart and it will start on
Monday the 7 th of July. Collect a free
entry form Alyth Post Office, Airlie
Street or The Spar Commercial
Street follow the instructions which
will lead you round the town.
Look for the Teddy Bears/ displays in the shop windows,
answer the questions. For the young ones taking part
please look and listen for the traffic as you cross the roads.
Once you have answered all the questions please take your
entry forms to The Doll’s House Shop, Camno Workshop,
Commercial Street, Alyth.
We hope you all have fun completing the Teddy Bear’s Trail,
and visitors to the town have enjoyed their visit to Alyth as
much as Teddy is.
Thanks must be expressed to the compiler Mrs. J. McGill, for
her work in producing the entry form, all the businesses for
their Teddy Bear displays and their willingness to take part
and to all who have entered and those who are going to do so.
Have fun on the trail.
Thanks must be expressed to Mr.W.Gordon of Alyth Post
Office and his staff and Paul’s Spar, Commercial Street and
his staff for distributing all the entry forms and to everyone
who takes part in the Teddy Bear’s Trail.
The winner will be announced at the September committee
meeting.
TED
Consideration for our Bus Drivers PLEASE!
your car receives dents and scratches–
move to an appropriate parking space.
As for disabled drivers, you also have
to
park safely as a door left
open for more than a few
seconds will be courting
danger for yourself and
other vehicle users in that
particular area.
A constructive suggestion would be to
do away with the parking bays outside
“Sims” and the “Bank” and leave a wide
road for all vehicle users, with parking
bays already in place beside the business
surely that is ample.
I wonder if the police and roads department
are aware of the considerable hazard.

Alyth Environmental Group Report
Gala Day
The Group, like many others, were very disappointed that the Gala was
cancelled. Much work from the members had gone into preparing for the
day. It is now planned that a stall will be taken, at the Arts& Crafts Festival
in August, to put on display the projects the AEG is involved in.
May Tasks
The latest two hour task, in May saw a clean up the old curling rink on
the Market Muir, by five embers and two teenage lads. Michael Smailes
and Richard Gould are working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze
Awards. It could be the ring might be used for some other purposes in
future. Rubbish was cleared from the adjoining woods and the war memorial
within the two hours. Clive is actively seeking the owners to discuss
the possibility of more work there to restore the ponds and woodland.
The group understands that there are “limitations of use “ concerning the
Muir but would welcome the ideas of anyone for putting this valuable
asset back into use.
Drumderg Wind Farm
All is very quiet, but things should perk up soon as a planning application
was due to be presented to PKC during June. The website is still
being worked on by Robert Stewart, it is hoped to be up and running
soon.
Recycling Point Facelift
To be passed on to Alyth Youth Partnership as a possible future project.
Beech Hedge At Alyth PS
No response from the school re finishing this project.
Alyth Hill
The AEG is to contact Scottish Natural Heritage concerning an ecological
survey. A cow, grazing on Alyth Hill, almost chocked to death on the
top pf a plastic ”sucky” drinks bottle. This brings to light the problem of
litter dropping particularly in places where the road cleaner does not
operate. For the sake of other humans and the animals DON’T DROP
LITTER, PLEASE TAKE IT HOME.
Scottish Outdoor Access Code
The group is grateful to member, Paul Fannon, for the work he has done
in preparing the AEG’s proposed response. This will be distributed to all
other members for comment and amendment prior to being returned to
SNH.
Den O’ Alyth
We now have the plans form the P&K Ranger Service, for wheel chair
friendly paths which SNH has approved. The total cost of the project
could be £70,000.
The group has received £10,000 in funding from PK Countryside Trust.
We have a promise of a further £10,000 from another source.
We should hear soon if our Heritage Lottery Fund bid has been successful,
meanwhile Clive and Charles are still putting bids together.
Small Task Funding
Small grants of about £200 are available from The Countryside Trust for
jobs such as installing a kissing gate or signing.
New Alyth School Link
No reply from School
Trodlem Footpath
This path to Alyth Hill, is the subject of the group’s July task but it has
been decided that some preliminary work will be carried out Sunday
morning 22nd June. As always
the July task will be at 2pm, 20th July, meeting at the junction of Strathmore
Terrace and Trodlem.
Alyth Road Sweeper
Clive has found out that if anybody sees an area that needs cleaning the
road sweeper will be pleased to hear about it as he does not work a fixed
round.
The AEG next meeting is in the Alyth Hotel on Thursday 17th July at
7.30pm
TWAYBLADES AND SAND MARTINS by Paul Ramsay
The swifts did come here, after all. They arrived here on the 26 th
of May, about a fortnight later than last year, as I reminded
myself by a chance reference to my piece for the June 2002
‘Voice’.
The pigs have moved from their winter quarters to a summer
haven in a scrubby den. The vegetation there includes red
berried elder and broom, for the most part, with a lot of wild
raspberry, but there is some birch and I saw a well-grown hazel
bush on the bank. At the west end of the den, by the old road
that goes over to Kilry and Glenisla, there is a profusion of
young ash saplings, the offspring of a nearby mature ash tree.
Larch predominates on the steep bank south of the little burn. In
their new place the pigs merge into the broom and elder and can
stay hidden there, if they want, until feeding time, when they
emerge into open ground. My hope for the pigs in their summer
quarters is that they will create conditions in which birch and
other trees find it easier to seed and thrive. It will be interesting
to see if this is what happens and over what time scale.
Twayblade, an orchid of damp and dark woodland, was pointed
out to me recently by a friend, as we walked about. I admired
the large pair of luscious leaves, set opposite each other, that
give this plant its name. Above the leaves grows the slender
spike with its green flowers. Fifteen years may elapse between
the time that a twayblade seed germinates and the mature plant
flowers. In this time the seed grows a rhizome, initially helped
by a mycorrhiza, and root network. Eventually, the rhizome
throws up the flowering spike and all is set for sexual
reproduction.
A plant like twayblade that needs fifteen years to go from seed to
flowering needs to live undisturbed. Heavy machinery,
hammering about over its head and compacting the soil in which
it lives, is unlikely to be good for it. This is the case for many of
our most interesting species and is one reason why it is important
to look after the fragments of relatively undisturbed woodland,
such as that in the Den of Alyth. And yet nature is dynamic:
trees in ancient forests blow down and clearings result into which
those opportunistic species of plant and animal move. Our
problem in these small islands is lack of scale and that is why so
much nature conservation seems to turn into a form of gardening.
Standing by the pond some evenings ago I watched sand martins
feeding on the insects flying above its waters. With their buff
backs and white underparts they are the smallest members of the
swallow family to breed in the British Isles. They breed in sand
pits and I have seen their burrows in the banks of the Isla.
Another evening of blustery wind I went, hoping to see them
again, but it was too late: the shift had changed and bats were
out, feeding where the sand martins had been before.
The Magical Question of Viscum Album
Does the magic of the mistletoe die when cut?
Does it contain magic, or is the magic in the scythe that cuts it?
Is the magic in the hand that wields the scythe?
Is that in itself magic; the belief, or is it all just wishful thinking?
If it is, is wishful thinking magic?
Is that what magic is, or is it the result from the momentary kiss that
is sometimes freely offered beneath the mistletoe?
Could it be the potion that is sipped in the apple orchards beneath
the moon, that allows the kiss to bloom within the wishful thinker;
therefore allowing someone to feel the magic of love?
Is that wishful thinking?
….and upon that sip, the berry plucked from the drinker
by the mistle thrush, who carries it to the source of the wish,
and love swells up inside the heart of the dreamer.
Maybe wishful thinking is magic, maybe not, but truthfully it does
exist in love and love can stem from a kiss whether it is incited from
the mistletoe or not. So therefore, the kiss is the only true magic. At
least it was for me….and that was beneath mistletoe.
Thanks to Matthew Rose of Alyth for this months piece of prose

ALYTH AMATEURS FOOTBALL CLUB
P.A.F.A. CONSOLATION CUP WINNERS
The Amies held their annual presentation/ dinner dance in the
Alyth Bowling Club on Saturday 14th June. Over 50 players and
supporters enjoyed a buffet/meal and dancing to the all girl band
Unison.
It proved to be another successful season for the Amies, with the
club reaching the final of the Marshall Cup and winning the Consolation
Cup. In the First Division, the club managed to finish in
3rd place. As this had been very much a re-building period, with
the bulk of the players being under 20, the club were delighted to
win their 19th trophy in 14 seasons.
President Rab Kydd presented the individual awards. Rab found
out during the evening that he had become a grandfather for the
second time!! Congratulations Rab!
The club are in the process of putting together their own website.
Once it is up and running, we will post details in “The
Voice” and posters round the town.
In the next edition of “The Voice”, details of the coming season
will be given. The club are optimistic that season 2003/04 will be
even more successful than this one. There are several improvements
planned and these will be announced shortly.
The club is immensely proud of it’s history and of what past
players have achieved for us.
We would like to thank the large number of people who give so
generously of their time, hard work, support, advice, not to mention
money. Thanks a million to you all! It’s the support of the
community that makes Alyth AFC the best amateur football club
in Scotland!
It’s Berry time again so here’s a little recipe for those Straws-
Strawberry Sensation
This dessert is a little like an old fashioned trifle.
Serves 6
Jam Swiss roll - 1 large
Kirsch - 2 tbsp
Strawberries - 450g (1 lb), hulled and halved
White wine - 150 ml (¼ pint)
Lemon juice - 2 tbsp
Caster sugar - 75g (3 oz)
Double cream - 300 ml (½ pint)
Pistachio nuts - chopped
Strawberries - sliced, to decorate
METHOD
1. Slice the Swiss roll and arrange in a large glass
bowl. Pour over the kirsch. Place the strawberries
over the Swiss roll. Put the wine, lemon juice and
sugar in a bowl. Add the cream and whip with a
hand whisk until the mixture is softly stiff and holds
its shape.
2. Pour over the Swiss roll and strawberries, cover and
refrigerate for about 2 hours. Before serving, decorate
with the nuts and strawberry slices.
DID YOU KNOW?
Alyth AFC have won 19 trophies in the last 14 seasons!
In it’s history, the club have won a total of 24 trophies
(since season 1964/65).
The longest period Alyth have gone without winning a trophy in
the PAFA was 25 years. The drought lasted from season 1939/40
until 1964/65. Mind you Alyth teams were having a great deal of
success in other leagues!
In the last 14 seasons, only 3 seasons were trophy-less for the
club:-95/96;97/98;99/2000.
Alyth AFC are the only team to have won the P.A.F.A Consolation
Cup in 3 consecutive seasons:- 90/91;91/92;92/93. In all the
club have won the Consolation Cup on 6 occasions.
The only 2 trophies that Alyth A.F.C. have never won, are the
P.A.F.A League Cup and the S.A.F.A Scottish Cup. There’s always
