So you’ve lost a file? Can’t remember where you saved it? Here are a couple of helpful ways to find your file. Search for Files in Windows 1. Click Start, and then click Search 2. Click All files and folders. If you do not see All files and folders, you have probably changed your default search behavior. 1. Click Change preferences. 2. Click Change files and folders search behaviour. 3. Click Standard, and then click OK. 4. Click All files and folders 3. Type part or all of the name of the file or folder, or type a word or phrase that is in the file. 4. If you do not know either piece of information or want to narrow your search further, select one or more of the remaining options: 5. Click search. o In Look in, click the drive, folder, or network you want to search. o Click When was it modified? to look for files that were created or modified on or between specific dates. o Click What size is it? to look for files of a specific size. o Click More advanced options to specify additional search criteria. • If you get too many results, try using additional search criteria to make your search more specific. HAPPY COMPUTING!!! 7 ARTICLE FOR ‘ALYTH VOICE’ BY Paul Ramsay This has been an autumn of brilliant colours thanks to dry weather and clear frosty nights. All over western Europe the story is the same: a dry summer has been followed by a droughty autumn. My wife and I attended the Third International Symposium on the Beaver at Arnhem in Holland recently. As we sat in the train, bound for Arnhem from Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport, we travelled through a landscape of small fields, bounded by frequent ditches that led to canals. Every now and then cultivation, or grassland ceased and there would be a small wetland of reeds and willows: human settlement was always evident. The grass was grazed by Friesian cows and small flocks of Texel sheep. As we neared Arnhem the landscape changed to one of dry sandy heaths with pine and oak woodland. The symposium was attended by about one hundred and twenty people from most of the European countries: Germans, Austrians, Dutch, Belgians, French, Danes, Norwegians, Swedes, Finns, Lithuanians, Poles, Russians, Czechs, Slovaks, Hungarians and Croatians. From further afield there were Americans, Canadians and an Argentinian. Time and again fellow participants would ask us about the progress of the official project to reintroduce beavers to Scotland and be surprised to learn that nothing much had happened for the last three years. It was clear that people were surprised at our country’s conservatism. If crowded Holland could receive the beaver why couldn’t Scotland with so much more space? On our last day in Arnhem we were driven by bus to the Gelderse Poort, a nature reserve created from disused clay and sand pits. Beavers were introduced to this area of wetland and willow wood about fifteen years ago. The tall willow trees that predominated in the wood were white willows (Salix alba), a hybrid of which is the cricket bat willow grown in East Anglia. The water level of the ponds was about a metre below the normal level, which left the beds of the shallower ponds exposed. It was curious to walk about dryshod in one of the ponds and examine the tuberous root systems of the water lilies. Fresh water mussel shells littered the shore in several places, victims of the drought. From time to time we saw living fresh water mussels progressing slowly through the shallows of the ponds. They left behind them a long furrow, once at least in an elegant and extended figure of eight. To say that they moved seems like an exaggeration because for the most part they seemed quite inert, but if one stood and watched for a few minutes there would be a sudden puff of sand and the animal could be seen to shift a few millimetres. After the symposium was over we spent a day in Amsterdam, much of it in the Rijksmuseum. Gazing at ‘The Windmill at Wijk bij Duurstede’ by Jacob Ruysdael (http://gallery.euroweb.hu/html/r/ruysdael/jacob/3/ windmill.html) with its enormous dark and cloudy sky (land and water took up only a fraction of the picture), I wondered what the miller was thinking as he looked over the landscape from the balcony of his mill and reflected on the extraordinary concentration of people that inhabit this remarkable country today and their struggle to stay there. Vandals of the Older Kind If by chance it had been youngsters they would have been called vandals. Someone gave the order for the Barriers to be removed from the Burn of Alyth, this letting all of the water out, leaving a trickle for the fish to swim in, and a big glaury smelly hole- Not good for Alyth’s image! Someone also gave the order for the flowers to be removed ( Still in full bloom mind you) from around the Millennium Clock. Yes, just by order of PKC!! After getting in touch with our common sensical councillors, Ian Miller and Marguerite McKenzie, they soon sorted such bureaucratic idiocy.
