Thanks to George Allan Chair of the AYP
for his article opposite.
There was no intention to apportion blame on
the young people of Alyth, as we all know
vandals come in all ages….
However someone was responsible for the
vandalism in our Town.
The people of Alyth do care, this is made
evident by all those working together in this
community. In recent months we have seen
both young and old working in various projects
in the town– Burn clean up, Maze, Tree
planting, Planter planting, to mention only a
few.
The generosity of the Alyth community both
young and old, is unstinting, as all our groups
of fund raisers will agree. Whether it be with
their time or their purse, and very often both.
MUSIC FOR ALYTH
Neil Archbold came to live in Alyth last
year and is bowled over by the great community
spirit in the town. He was really
impressed with the terrific Xmas lights
display which is funded entirely by the
people of Alyth and managed by an enthusiastic
group of volunteers. Such an undertaking
requires significant funding both to
maintain and improve the lights year on
year.
To help raise funds for the Alyth Xmas
Lights, and as a thank you to the people of
Alyth for making him and his wife Anne so
welcome Neil has named his new book of
traditional music “The Cantie Musikers
O’Alyth” and is donating all profits from
the sale of the book to the Alyth Xmas
Lights Fund.
The book contains many previously unpublished
pieces and is ideal for playing and
for dancing. Neil himself plays the
Northumbrian Small Pipes– an instrument
not heard often in these parts. The tunes are
suitable for most folk instruments, fiddle,
accordion etc. This is the fourth book of
Neil’s music to be published and contains
sixty tunes including a number of prize
winning compositions.
The “Cantie Musikers O’Alyth is on sale at
the Post Office priced £10.00, or can be
obtained directly from Neil:-
AYP VISION OF A PERFECT ALYTH
The article “Vandals strike again in Alyth” gives
an impression that folk don’t care about “our
quiet little country town”. We all have different
images of Alyth and on a recent residential experience,
a group of young people from AYP
came up with their vision of a perfect Alyth for
young people that I would like to share with readers:-
“Our perfect Alyth would be a bright, clean, modern
place with no litter, no vandalism and no
drugs. Play parks would be cheerfully painted
with exciting modern equipment with pavilion
shelters, skate ramps, flying fox and basketball
and netball courts. There would be good facilities
like a leisure/sports centre, swimming pool and
football stadium. There would be lots of chances
for young people to do activities like quad bikes,
paint ball, football and all sorts of outdoor activities
and trips away to exciting places. There
would be good public transport; especially running
later so young people could make the best of
things to do in other towns. The people of Alyth
would be less old-fashioned in their outlook.
Adults including the police, would have a more
positive attitude towards young people and be
willing to work with them and help them do the
things they want to do and make Alyth a better
place for everyone.”
So their aspirations are not very different to the
rest of us. Too often the young are blamed for all
the ills ( and we know that the 2 window-breaking
incidents in last month’s piece were not committed
by young people). Young people are not
wholly blameless but who else is to blame? The
1
following poem was written by a young Duke
of Edinburgh’s Award participant in 1959 and
still has a resonance today.
Who is to blame?
We see on the movies, and hear on the air,
Of killing and stealing, crime everywhere.
We look and we say as notice the trend,
This young generation, where will it end?
Too much money, too much idle time,
Too many movies of passion and crime.
Too many kids encouraged to roam,
By too many parents, who won’t stay at home.
Kids don’t make the movies,
Kids don’t write the books,
That paint a gay picture of gangsters and
crooks.
Kids don’t make the liquor, kids don’t run the
bars,
Kids don’t make the laws, kids don’t drive the
cars.
Kids don’t make the drugs that destroy the
brain,
It’s all done by older folk, greedy for gain.
Thus in so many cases it must be confessed,
The label delinquent fits older folk best.
F W White , 1959
In “The Passionate Pilgrim”, Shakespeare contends
that “crabbed age and youth cannot live
together”. It is up to all of us to prove him
wrong if we are to create the Alyth where care,
consideration and respect towards others is
constant regardless of age etc.
GREAT TRUTHS ABOUT GROWING OLD
1 Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.
2 Forget the health food. I need all the preserves I can get.
3 When you fall down, you wonder what else you can do when
you’re down there.
4 You’re getting old when you get the same sensation from a
rocking chair that you got from a roller coaster.
CHRISTMAS GIFTS
The sun is hot the earth is dry
But still these children march on by
They have traveled for many a mile
Walking along in single file.
They travel on into the night
Until the early morning light,
Soon the crossroads they will find
Excitement on their little minds.
Christmas time is here at last
Another long hard year as passed.
Then their faces smile with glee
Down the road the lorries they see
Loaded with gifts for them to share
Sent from people they know who care.
In this time of poverty and pain
A present they are glad to gain,
A little toy and a bowl of rice
Puts a sparkle in all their eyes.
So this Christmas on shopping day
Think of those children far away
Spare a thought and spare a gift
And give those children's hearts a lift.
Have ready a 7 inch round cake tin with double thickness buttered
grease-proof paper. Clean the fruit and dry very thoroughly. Cream the
butter and sugar together until white and fluffy. Add lightly beaten eggs
gradually to the creamed mixture.
Sieve dry ingredients into bowl and add gradually. Lastly add rind, juice
of lemon and brandy. Mixture should be of a stiff dropping consistency.
Put mixture into prepared tin, leaving a slight hollow in the centre so it
will rise flat. Bake 3 to 4 hours at 300F.

Postcards Makeover Please
Having had friends from afar visiting over the summer, I sought interesting,
relevant and “different” postcards of Alyth. I’m still seeking!
I didn’t fancy one of cars parked in the square. Could I suggest and I’m
sure this has been done before, that readers of Alyth Voice suggest sites
and situations for future pics? The Burn, Den and Kirk are lovely, but
people and animals are great here too.
Josi, a little bird told the Voice that the Community Council has
this very subject in hand, we look forward to some new and interesting
Dear Editor,
First let me confess that I had not heard of James Sandy till I read about
him recently in your Jan/Feb 2002 edition. Like many other people, I
imagine, I am greatly intrigued and would very much like to learn
more. Can you help me?
What kind of genius was he? Has any account been published, dealing
with his life or achievements? I note that Mrs Wessal has “collected
quite a bit of information about him” and you refer to “correspondence
that has been building up”
If you can help me in any way to learn more about “The Genius of
Alyth” I’d be very grateful indeed.
Best wishes
Yours sincerely
Victorian Day which will take place on Saturday
the 29 th November 2003, is a fun day
that is sponsored by Alyth & District Business
Association. On this date Alyth will
once more step back in time, into the year of
Victoria of 1900. Most of the business owners
and staff will be dressed in Victorian
Style, and giving courteous and oldfashioned
assistance and service to all. Unfortunately
there are no promises of prices
from over one hundred years ago but one
never knows.
In conjunction with Victorian Day, which
has taken place over the previous six years
and brought a great deal of fun and jollity to
all that have been involved. There is also a
Victorian Dress Costume Competition,
which will be judged during the day by the
Alyth Citizen of the Year 2003, and the
THE CHRISTMAS WINDOW
COMPETITION
ALYTH & DISTRICT BUSINESS ASSOCIA-
TION once again are sponsoring a window dressing
competition for all businesses in Alyth to take part
in.
It is intended that the judging will be held over the
Festive Period, hopefully between the 8 th and 14 th of
December, by the Alyth Citizen of the Year 2003
and the Young Citizen of the Year 2003.
The standard of exhibits over the last six years has
been excellent, and it is hoped that this year the
businesses will do their utmost to assist in helping
to bring Christmas cheer to Alyth for the enjoyment
of all. Let’s make the Christmas Windows in Alyth
the best in Perthshire if not Scotland and also it will
make the judge’s task a really difficult undertaking.
It is hoped that all the Christmas windows will be
on display by the 29 th of November 2003 the day
the Christmas Lights in Alyth are switched on.
The Christmas Window Competition Shield will be
presented to the winner along with certificates for
1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd place.
On Tuesday, 7th October the Alyth Literary Society
started it's winter programme with an illustrated
talk by Mr Robert Hamilton from Bearsden. Assisted
by his travelling companion, Mr John Mackay,
Mr Hamilton took the large and appreciative
audience on a tour of the Western Isles from Arran
to South Uist and then rounded off with a short visit
to the Isle of May. Both men spend much of their
time walking throughout Scotland and this particular
talk was the product of many visits to the islands.
Mr Hamilton, who is a member of the Clydebank
Cam--era Club, impressively captured the
varied natural beauty of the isles on slides but his
expertise with a camera was probably best seen in
the magnificent sunsets and sunrises, which delighted
the audience.
The National Archives of Scotland was the subject
of the talk given on 21' October to another well
filled Ogilvy Rooms. Mr Jim Crow, a retired member
of the Archives -staff, assisted by Mr Robin
VICTORIAN DAY
Young Citizen of the year 2003. The winner's
will be presented with the Victorian Costume
Shield and there will also be framed certificates
for 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd places.
It is hoped that all businesses and business personnel
will be taking part, and that there will be
many locals in period dress to add to the sense
of belonging to times of long ago.
Also many Charity or Charitable Organizations
from Alyth and District will have stalls with
items for sale etc. in the Airlie Street Hall between
1.00. p.m. and 4.30.p.m. If you wish to
have a charity stall please contact Michael Kay
on telephone 01828 632252/632690. There will
be no charge for anyone/group taking part as
Alyth & District Business Association is paying
all rental costs.
It is hoped also to have children of primary
school age taking part in Victorian Games on
years they have been providing summer
and much needed respite for their
of 60 children and young people attending
on a daily basis for 4 weeks during
the summer holidays receiving one to one
support from a very dedicated team of
volunteers.
They try to provide the same for a week at
you can imagine the cost of providing such
support is not cheap and with only a small
Record Sum Raised in Alyth
Alyth Parish church raised the wonderful some of
Taylor, a professional searcher gave an extremely
in-formative illustrated talk on the history and development
of what was known until recently as the
Scottish Records Office. He then followed on by
describing the records held from property records to
artefacts recovered from the Tay Bridge disaster.
Mr Crow's knowledge of the Archives was evident
from the detail and anecdotes, which were a feature
of a talk delivered professionally, enthusiastically
and with not a little humour.
The nest talk will take place on Tuesday, 4th November
when the author Polly Pullar from Aberfeldy
will give an illustrated talk on "Country Matters".
On Tuesday 18th November Mr Peter Morrison
from Edinburgh will give an insight into the
development of Ordnance Survey. Both meetings
will be held in the Ogilvy Rooms, Commercial
Street, Alyth and commence at 7.30pm.
In Alyth Square at the conclusion of the
Christmas Lights switching on ceremony by
Alyth Christmas Lights Committee there will
be two Victorian Dress Competitions. The
competitions will be for children up to the age
for people in Victorian Dress which will
be also judged by The Alyth Citizen of the
Everyone from near and far is invited to come
portion of the funding coming from the
to all at the PostOffice and the Spar in
So you’ve lost a file? Can’t remember where you saved it?
Here are a couple of helpful ways to find your file.
Search for Files in Windows
1. Click Start, and then click Search
2. Click All files and folders.
If you do not see All files and folders, you
have probably changed your default search
behavior.
1. Click Change preferences.
2. Click Change files and folders search behaviour.
3. Click Standard, and then click OK.
4. Click All files and folders
3. Type part or all of the name of the file or folder, or type a
word or phrase that is in the file.
4. If you do not know either piece of information or want to
narrow your search further, select one or more of the remaining
options:
5. Click search.
o In Look in, click the drive, folder, or network you
want to search.
o Click When was it modified? to look for files
o Click More advanced options to specify additional
search criteria.
• If you get too many results, try using additional search criteria
to make your search more specific.
Search for files in Word
If you cannot find the file you want to open by using the shortcuts on
the Places Bar or by looking in the folders you usually save documents
in, you can enter search criteria from within Word (in the Open
dialog box, click Tools, and then click Find) or use one of the following
procedures to search for files.
Search for files by name
1. Click Open .
2. Click Tools, and then click Find.
3. In the Look in box, click the drive or folder you want to
search.
To search more than one drive at a time, type each drive
name separated by a semicolon in the Look in box. For
example, type C:\;D:\.
4. To search all subfolders of the selected folders and display
the folders that contain the files that are found, select
the Search subfolders check box.
ARTICLE FOR ‘ALYTH VOICE’ BY Paul Ramsay
This has been an autumn of brilliant colours thanks to dry weather and
clear frosty nights. All over western Europe the story is the same: a dry
summer has been followed by a droughty autumn. My wife and I attended
the Third International Symposium on the Beaver at Arnhem in
Holland recently. As we sat in the train, bound for Arnhem from Amsterdam’s
Schipol Airport, we travelled through a landscape of small
fields, bounded by frequent ditches that led to canals. Every now and
then cultivation, or grassland ceased and there would be a small wetland
of reeds and willows: human settlement was always evident. The grass
was grazed by Friesian cows and small flocks of Texel sheep. As we
neared Arnhem the landscape changed to one of dry sandy heaths with
pine and oak woodland.
The symposium was attended by about one hundred and twenty people
from most of the European countries: Germans, Austrians, Dutch, Belgians,
French, Danes, Norwegians, Swedes, Finns, Lithuanians, Poles,
Russians, Czechs, Slovaks, Hungarians and Croatians. From further
afield there were Americans, Canadians and an Argentinian. Time and
again fellow participants would ask us about the progress of the official
project to reintroduce beavers to Scotland and be surprised to learn that
nothing much had happened for the last three years. It was clear that
people were surprised at our country’s conservatism. If crowded Holland
could receive the beaver why couldn’t Scotland with so much more
space?
On our last day in Arnhem we were driven by bus to the Gelderse Poort,
a nature reserve created from disused clay and sand pits. Beavers were
introduced to this area of wetland and willow wood about fifteen years
ago. The tall willow trees that predominated in the wood were white
willows (Salix alba), a hybrid of which is the cricket bat willow grown
in East Anglia. The water level of the ponds was about a metre below
the normal level, which left the beds of the shallower ponds exposed. It
was curious to walk about dryshod in one of the ponds and examine the
tuberous root systems of the water lilies. Fresh water mussel shells littered
the shore in several places, victims of the drought. From time to
time we saw living fresh water mussels progressing slowly through the
shallows of the ponds. They left behind them a long furrow, once at
least in an elegant and extended figure of eight. To say that they moved
seems like an exaggeration because for the most part they seemed quite
inert, but if one stood and watched for a few minutes there would be a
sudden puff of sand and the animal could be seen to shift a few millimetres.
After the symposium was over we spent a day in Amsterdam, much of it
in the Rijksmuseum. Gazing at ‘The Windmill at Wijk bij Duurstede’ by
Jacob Ruysdael (http://gallery.euroweb.hu/html/r/ruysdael/jacob/3/
windmill.html) with its enormous dark and cloudy sky (land and water
took up only a fraction of the picture), I wondered what the miller was
thinking as he looked over the landscape from the balcony of his mill
and reflected on the extraordinary concentration of people that inhabit
this remarkable country today and their struggle to stay there.
Vandals of the Older Kind
If by chance it had been youngsters they would have been called vandals.
Someone gave the order for the Barriers to be removed from the Burn of
Alyth, this letting all of the water out, leaving a trickle for the fish to
swim in, and a big glaury smelly hole-
Not good for Alyth’s image!
Someone also gave the order for the flowers to be removed ( Still in full
bloom mind you) from around the Millennium Clock. Yes, just by order
of PKC!!
After getting in touch with our common sensical councillors, Ian Miller
and Marguerite McKenzie, they soon sorted such bureaucratic idiocy.
If you see something needing sorted DO something about it!!!
The society would like to thank all those people who came along
and saw our concert held over two nights. The audiences, although
small, were most appreciative of the performance and the 44 songs
that were sung. Without this sort of support it would be difficult for
the society to keep going as it costs well over £10,000 to put on a
show.
The society have also commenced rehearsals for next year's show,
Nell's Belles, but it is not too late to come along and join the company.
Rehearsals are held in the Ogilvie Rooms every Monday at
club and it is our responsibility to try to maintain these standards she
set.
The club have set out an agenda to try to keep upgrading and improving
facilities in the Diamond Jubilee Park, with whatever resources they
have, despite the lack of help from authorities and many acts of mindless
vandalism that does not seem to be peculiar to Alyth.
All at the club are looking forward to an exciting season with no fewer
than 12 teenagers in the squad of players.
ALYTH AMATEURS FOOTBALL SEASON
Alyth Amateurs football season is continuing in a positive manner,
with good results being the order of the day. It is the 10th
anniversary of the clubs greatest on field achievement when the
North of Tay Cup took pride of place in the Trophy Cabinet. It
would be a pleasant way to celebrate that achievement if the present
team brought the trophy back to Alyth. The management
believe the present squad of players is the best since the cup
winning side of 1993/94.
The club at present has no major sponsor and would be delighted
to hear from any business who may be interested in using our
shirts as a means of advertising their business.
We estimate that to kit out an individual player for one season is
approximately £50 and the cost of a match football is £40. ( We
use 5 per season)
If anyone or any business is interested in sponsoring a player or
match ball we would be delighted to hear from them.
Finally I would like to thank all the people who always support
and give so generously to all our fundraisers. I.E Bingo, Race
Nights, and those who have made generous donations to the club.
Yours in Sport
