Those members are Hannah Lents, Lynn Kowsz, Courtney Federico, and Megan Armes. Brian Finn, also a graduating senior and TAB member, was unable to attend the meeting. Adult Services Librarian Elaine Boudreau serves as the group’s advisor. Friends of the Douglas Library Helen Reardon (second from left) recently presented graduating members of the Teen Advisory Board with gift checks for their service to the library and to the community. Not shown is graduating TAB member Brian Finn. TAB sponsored two programs this past academic year, both of which were well attended. In November, they hosted the “Henna Program,” where a Henna artist provided attendees with free Henna tattoos. In March, “What’s Underneath”, an annual program for all teens in the area was held. Students exhibited their talents/projects in the audio-visual arts “coffee house” style presentations. Some of the presentations were trials for school finals; others were of personal interest or hobbies. A small group of TAB members do a bi-monthly book display in the Young Adult section of the library which included “Blue Books,” “Romantic Novels,” “American History,” “Classics,” and “Series.” Throughout the year, members of the TAB group make recommendations for adding and deleting the materials in the YA section of the library. Two TAB members are also responsible to keep the Young Adult webpage on the library’s website updated. “Last fall a group started sprucing up the library’s gardens under the supervision of Maureen Anne Murphy (who is currently starting up a Hebron Farmer’s Market),” said Boudreau. “This group will be starting a spring clean-up shortly”. Besides the gardening for the summer, TAB members are also busy with their annual recruitment newsletter and party for September. As their website states, “Indulge us in our shameless recruiting and Join TAB!” All the forms to become a member are available online at http://www.douglaslibrary.org/YA/youngadult.htm. “I joined TAB because I wanted to volunteer at the library,” said Lents. “When I was a freshman, I went to the library with a friend every Thursday to do homework and hang out, it was a kind of sanctuary. I decided that I wanted to volunteer there, because I felt like I owed something back. I asked Elaine Boudreau about volunteering. I was not yet old enough, but she told me about TAB and I decided to join.” “TAB is a wonderful group that allows its members to make a positive change in their community,” said Kowsz. “It is also an excellent way to fulfill community service hour requirements. Most of our members continue to be active in the group because we really enjoy what we are doing and have fun with it.” “I would like to think that I’ve helped other teens see that the library isn’t just home for books,” said Lents. “It can also be home for your intellect. Christ Lutheran Early Childhood Center Field Trip to the Children’s Museum of SE CT The Pre-K and School Age kids at CLECC travelled to Niantic for a field trip to the Children’s Museum of SE CT on 4/22/09. The group descended on the museum and took full advantage of all it had to offer from the Channel 8 “studio”, the Chinese market, the fish market and much more. The kids all had a great time and returned to the center tired, happy and full of stories. We’re all looking forward to our upcoming summer field trips to the UConn Horse Barn, Creamery Brook Bison, and Hungerford Park.
