1970s
Walt Bazan, Jr. ’75 was recently elected
2012-2013 national president of the American
Subcontractors Association, Inc.
(ASA) at the ASA Business Forum and
Convention 2012 in San Antonio, Texas.
Walt is president of Bazan Painting Company
in St. Louis.
Steve Johans ’76 was the father of the
groom at the recent wedding of his son,
Stewart ’04. Steve’s other sons, Stephen
’03 & Spencer ’07 served as best men.
Ushers in the wedding were De Smet
alums, Stephen Krieger ’04 and Kevin
Mosher ’05. Uncle of the groom was Tim
Johans ’78.
Chris Burnes ’78 was the proud father of
the groom in May. His son is Christopher
J. Burnes Jr. ’00. Joining in the celebration
was proud uncle, Brian P. Burnes III ’72.
Jim Beatt y, Ph.D ’79 was awarded the
M. Cathlin Casey Award for Teaching Excellence
from the 1818 Advanced College
Credit Program at Saint Louis University.
The award is based upon service to the
1818 program; excellence in classroom
teaching; and contribution, support and
commitment to the 1818 Advanced College
Credit Program. Jim teaches Spanish
and is the modern language department
chair at Lindbergh High School in St.
Louis and has taught in the 1818 program
for 28 years. Jim shared his passion for
his career with De Smet students at the
Alumni Mentor Lunch featuring education
careers.
1980s
Chris Wright ‘81, CLU achieved Million
Dollar Round Table Recognition for
2011, Top of The Table. The Million Dollar
Roundtable (MDRT), is an international,
independent association of nearly
19,000 leading life insurance producers.
MDRT is a coveted career milestone that
indicates sales and service achievement.
Chris is a Financial Representative with
Northwestern Mutual Life Foundation.

DE SMET JESUIT CONNECTED LAUNCHES, LINKS DE SMET JESUIT COMMUNITY
De Smet Jesuit High School recently
launched a new web site,
www.desmetjesuitconnected.com, which
promotes businesses owned by De Smet
Jesuit alumni and parents who contributed
to the school’s annual fund. The
site also allows any business to post job
openings, and provides job seekers the
opportunity to post their resume.
In addition, the site will allow De
Smet Jesuit alumni to opt in to an online
directory of their class, as well as regional
alumni groups.
“De Smet Jesuit Connected is designed
to serve as a vehicle for
De Smet Jesuit families to do business
with other De Smet Jesuit families,” said
John Stiles, V.P. of Institutional Advancement.
“If you need home improvements,
or you need to re-fi nance your mortgage,
you can fi nd businesses to address
those needs on the site.”
The “Business
Connected” tab lists
businesses of De Smet
Jesuit donors who
give at the Blackrobe
level ($1,500)or
higher, while the “Career
Connected” tab
is available for free to
anyone who wants to
post a job opening or
is looking for a job.
By January, Stiles
is hoping to have a
summer internship
section on the site,
which will allow
students who will be home over summer
break to fi nd employment.
“There are so many small business
owners who have graduated from
De Smet Jesuit, who are also hiring
De Smet Jesuit graduates,” Stiles said.
“This site will hopefully make it easier for
them to connect, and if one person fi nds
work from it, then it was well worth the
time and investment to build the site.”
Chris Murphy ’85 was recently named
Senior Partner and General Manager of
Fleishman-Hillard’s Dallas offi ce. He and
his wife Kourtney, have twin sons.
Chris Estes ’87 and his wife, Kerry, are
parents of eight children: Hayden (1),
Amelia (3), Genevieve (5), Jack (7), Marguerite
(10), Addison (13), Hayley (15)
and Aaron (16).
Dr. Pete Musso ’89 successfully defended
his dissertation to earn his Ed.D. from
Maryville University. Musso researched
ways to improve and fi ne-tune the feedback
and evaluation program at De Smet
Jesuit by adding best-practice research on
teaching techniques that have proven to
increase student achievement. He is currently
the Assistant Principal for Staff Development
at De Smet Jesuit.
1990s
Conrad Knoten ’92 was recently promoted
to Claims Adjuster II at Fireman’s
Fund Insurance Company.
