Peruvian anchoveta (Engraulis r<strong>in</strong>gens) became<br />

twice that catch of cod and contributed 11 percent<br />

of the catch <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals. The BA-DAP<br />

<strong>in</strong>dex <strong>in</strong>creased moderately <strong>in</strong> the 1980s but<br />

reduced aga<strong>in</strong> after 1990. The large <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong><br />

Alaska Pollack (Theragra chalcogramma) <strong>in</strong>creased<br />

the dom<strong>in</strong>ance of species with larger body weight<br />

between 1980 and 1990. However, the decl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

of Pollack catches contributed to the subsequent<br />

fall of the <strong>in</strong>dex. Overall, the average decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong><br />

the BA-DAP <strong>in</strong>dex can be <strong>in</strong>terpreted as an <strong>in</strong>dication<br />

of the <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g ‘stress’ <strong>in</strong> the reported<br />

fisheries catches of the 53 LMEs.<br />

Here, and <strong>in</strong> the subsequent two sections, we<br />

present results for three LMEs as examples, i.e.<br />

the Newfoundland-Labrador Shelf LME, the<br />

North <strong>Sea</strong> LME and the Baltic <strong>Sea</strong> LME.<br />

The Newfoundland-Labrador Shelf LME<br />

extends a considerable distance off the eastern<br />

coast of Canada, encompass<strong>in</strong>g the areas of the<br />

Labrador Current and the Grand Banks. As <strong>in</strong><br />

some other LMEs, overexploitation is the pr<strong>in</strong>ci-<br />
