A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT October 2008 A NNUAL R EPORT Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of Colby-Sawyer College, At Colby-Sawyer College we make every decision by asking how will students benefit. By making a gift to the college you benefit our students, and we all thank you for that generous and critical support. By making a gift for a designated purpose you benefit those students or faculty who participate in a particular program. Likewise, when you support our Annual Fund you benefit our students. But how exactly does your generous support of the college through an annual gift make a difference in our students’ lives? When I talk with people about Annual Fund support, I realize it is a great opportunity to invite ever more specific support of our work. Some people believe that a gift to the Annual Fund is used only to pay the electric bill, the propane bill, or the paint bill. While electricity, propane, and paint are all necessary expenses, it is understandable that not everyone thinks of the importance of such things when considering philanthropic commitments. Thus, they may think that a gift to the Annual Fund has less glamour attached to it than a designated gift to the endowment for scholarships or faculty support. I strongly believe people should invest in and support what they believe in. However, I would like to let you all in on a reliable truth. If annual giving to the college declined, we would still need to pay the electric bill, we would still need to pay the propane bill, and we would still need to buy paint as necessary. The point is that there are certain fixed, rather necessary items, which we are going to have to pay for no matter how much we raise through the Annual Fund. So, what would actually happen if Annual Fund support did not grow each year? The answer is as simple as looking at the educational priorities of the institution and how they are reflected in our overall budget. For instance, we would have much less to invest in supporting mission-critical programs like scholarships, student development, and faculty support. Our approximate total annual budget is $40 million. Of that $40 million, about $11 million is devoted to financial aid and scholarships for our students. Approximately $600,000 of that $11 million is funded from endowment earnings. The rest comes from tuition revenues and annual giving. Thus, a gift to the Annual Fund makes a huge difference in our ability to provide our students with financial aid and scholarship support, and the specific educational initiatives budgeted each year that are made possible by current operating gifts to the college. Simply put, a gift to the Annual Fund allows many students to attend Colby-Sawyer who might not otherwise have been able to do so. To illustrate: a $10,000 gift to the Annual Fund would support a student with a scholarship. Friends who make gifts to support annual scholarships are able to directly invest in a particular student’s educational well-being. To endow a $10,000 annual scholarship would require a gift of approximately $200,000. Thus, a current or Annual Fund gift of $10,000 for a student scholarship is, in essence, a living endowment that works immediately to benefit the recipient. ––continued on page 2 JULY 1, 2007 THROUGH JUNE 30, 2008 1 A NNUAL R EPORT
