One of the most stunning day hikes is the 15km Kleine Scheidegg walk from Grindelwald to Wengen. Other good high-altitude walks – around Männlichen, First and Pfi ngstegg – can be reached by taking cable cars up from the village. Anyone craving a challenge can tackle the Schwarzhorn via ferrata, a giddying 5½-hour scramble from First to Grosse Scheidegg. Midway between First and Grindelwald is Bort, where you can rent scooters to zoom back down to the valley on a 4.5km marked trail. Rental including the cable car to Bort costs Sfr30 for adults and Sfr22 for children. Kids can enjoy free play at Bort’s Alpine playground. Winter Activities Stretching from Oberjoch at 2486m right down to the village, the region of First presents a fi ne mix of cruisy red and challenging black ski runs. From Kleine Scheidegg or Männlichen there are long, easy runs back to Grindelwald, with Eiger demanding all the attention. For a crowd-free swoosh, check out the 15.5km of well-groomed crosscountry skiing trails in the area.
