Baptism
Baptisms are celebrated every Sunday of the month at 12:30PM.
Parents are expected to participate in a Baptismal Preparation
Program. Please call the rectory to arrange for
the Baptismal Preparation Program and a date for Baptism.
Weekly Anointing and Prayer
After the 9:OOAM Mass each Sunday, we will celebrate
the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, for anyone
who has the need to receive this sacrament. This is meant
to include such concerns as upcoming diagnostic tests,
limitations of aging, anxiety, depression, undue stress,
addiction, etc. for all ages.
Please gather in the pews at the front of church
and the priest will be with you approximately
10 minutes after Mass is over.

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 9, 2012
The Triumph of the Holy Cross…September 14 th
This Friday, September 14 th , is the feast of the Triumph of the
Holy Cross, previously called in the old Roman Calendar the
Exaltation of the Cross. Christians have celebrated this feast on
this day since the first half of the fourth century. According to
an Eastern text, the empress Helena discovered the Lord’s cross
on September 14, 320. Fifteen years later, on September13th,
two churches on Golgotha in Jerusalem were consecrated (the
church of the Cross and the Church of the Resurrection). On the
following day, the relic of the cross found by Helena was
solemnly exposed for public veneration. An annual
commemoration began in Jerusalem, and churches in other cities
that had relics of the cross brought them forth this day for
veneration by the faithful. The ceremony was called the
exaltation (lifting up). What follows are some words our
ancestors in the faith have used to describe the mystery, glory
and power of the cross of Christ.
May I never boast of anything but the cross of our Lord Jesus
Christ! Through it, the world has been crucified to me and I to
the world.

How splendid the cross of Christ!
It brings life, not death; light, not darkness;
Paradise, not its loss. It is the wood on
which the Lord, like a great warrior, was
wounded in hands and feet and side, but
healed thereby our wounds. A tree had
destroyed us, a tree now brought us life.
Theodore of Studios, 9 th Century
Several years ago we received a relic of the cross from Holy
Cross Parish in the Baden area of North St. Louis. The parish
possessed, amazingly, two relics of the Holy Cross and most
generously offered one of them to us. I remembered it when I
was the Pastor of Holy Cross Parish. Sister Mary Grace
Palumbo, the long-time sacristan of Holy Cross Church, was
present when Monsignor Martin B. Hellriegel, the world-famous
liturgist, received it years ago when he was pastor of that parish.
She told me about how Monsignor obtained the relic in Rome in
the 1960’s. He then had a special reliquary case made of silver
to house the holy relic. The silversmith was a friend of
Monsignor’s from New York City. The reliquary is in the shape

of a cross itself and on the border of the cross is a marvelous
Latin text about the cross. It reads: “Sing my tongue the triumph
of the glorious battle, and the victory over the cross, just as the
sacrificial redeemer of the world will conquer, speak out to such a
noble victory.”
On Friday we will have this holy relic on display at our two
morning Masses. You may come and venerate it, too, as did our
ancient ancestors in the faith. Of all the relics we have here at St.
Peter of the saints this is the most sacred and most revered. We
are very fortunate to possess such a venerable relic in our midst.
In addition, we will display the relic on Saturday, too, as this is
the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, certainly a feast with the cross
very much in the forefront.
Observe our wonderful statue of the Blessed Mother in our
church, too. That statue was designed by Rudy Torrini, the wellknown
St. Louis sculptor-artist and is entitled “Our Lady of
Sorrows.” Look at it closely and you will see that Mary is
carrying Jesus who is in the form of a cross. Thus Mary is truly
carrying the cross of sorrow for her son.
Speaking of relics…
Some are curious about the little wooden box that sits beneath our
main altar. What is that? I am glad you asked that question.
Several years ago I commissioned Dave Osmack, a master
carpenter and a permanent deacon, to construct a reliquary case
to sit underneath the altar. It is the box that contains our relics of
the saints. Now, according to the Church’s norms and directives
about altars, all relics should be housed beneath the altar instead
of the former custom of placing a relic of a holy martyr inside the
top of the “mensa” or altar table.
It has long been the tradition of the Church that upon the
consecration of an altar the bones or a relic of a holy martyr is
placed inside the top of the altar and sealed. Only the relic of a
martyr could be used, too. While we still have our original
martyr’s relics in our altar we now have many other relics of the
saints as well…martyr and non-martyr….beneath our altar. How
appropriate to have these canonized and recognized holy men and
women of the church with us each day as we celebrate the holy
mystery of the Eucharist! Truly, the communion of saints and the
communion of sinners, gathers together at our altar every time
Holy Mass is celebrated. Saints of the Lord, bless the Lord!
Sinners of the Lord, bless the Lord! Let all God’s creatures
great and small praise the Lord!
Pray for those folks unemployed or underemployed these days.
We still have an 8.5 unemployment rate, folks! Many people
are struggling financially. As we just celebrated Labor Day
what a great time to thank God for our work, our employment
but to also remember many who would love to find a job and
can’t.

SCRIPTURE STUDY FOR FALL 2012
We will begin with Fr. Robert Barron’s enlightening study on sin
and virtue! Over the course of this study, we will be taking a
look at what Catholic tradition calls the Seven Deadly Sins and
contrasting them with the Seven Lively Virtues.
Next, Untold blessing - Three paths to Holiness, Fr. Barron’s
look into the journey to sanctity. This is a look at the teaching of
the Catholic Church concerning our call to Christ Jesus, His
power to heal our lives, and His command to go out to the world.
The study is a DVD series designed to increase understanding,
promote reflection, and encourage practical action. You will also
have the chance to dig into the Catholic tradition and grapple with
Scripture and the Church’s teachings, enhancing your life as a
disciple of Jesus Christ.
Plus, lots of enlightening and lively discussion led by our own
Monsignor Jack Costello! Grazie!!!
We will meet Wednesdays from 9:00-10:30AM, September 12th
through November 14th in Ursuline Hall.

2nd Annual Bring A Buddy Drive
Another success!
57 parishioners were registered

All those who registered received a coupon for a free appetizer
at Texas Roadhouse, AND many were entered into the Bring A
Buddy drawing. That drawing was held this last week; however,
results were not available at the time the bulletin “went to
press.”
If you missed this blood drive, there’s still time to donate in the
name of St. Peter Parish. Go to the “fixed site” at 9860 Watson
Road (next to Sweet Tomatoes), and tell them you are donating
for St. Peter. Hours for the fixed site are: Tuesday thru Thursday
from 1:00PM to 7:00PM, and Friday and Saturday from
7:00AM to 1:00PM. Calling ahead is advised, though you can
simply “walk in.”
The blood collected at this drive will be on the shelves and
ready for the Labor Day weekend…right when it’s needed the
most! So thanks for all who donated. You are truly life savers!

ST. PETER YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS!
St. Peter Youth Ministry will be beginning a new ministry called
Making a Difference (M.A.D.) in September. This ministry will
focus on providing high school teens with opportunities once a
month to go out and get involved in different service events based
on Catholic Social Teaching. Teens will then have an opportunity
to reflect upon the focus area for the month and what they can
continue to do to make a difference in the lives of others. If you
are interested in learning more about these opportunities, please
contact Robby Francis at rfrancis@stpeterkirkwood.org.
St. Peter Youth Ministry will be attending the March for Life in
Washington, D.C. on January 23-27, 2013. All high school teens
are invited to attend this trip. The total cost of the trip is $235. If
you are interested in attending, please contact Robby Francis at
rfrancis@stpeterkirkwood.org before October 5 th .
St. Peter Luke 18 retreat is going to be January 4-6, 2013. This
retreat is for the 8 th graders of our parish but is led by our high
schoolers. If there are any high school teens who are interested in
helping with this retreat, please contact Robby Francis at

FOSTER FAITHFUL FAMILIES

care? About 1400 of those kids are
waiting for a forever adoptive
family. Is God calling you to care
for the "orphans" in our
community by becoming a foster or adoptive parent? One Heart
Family Ministries recruits, assists in training, and supports
Christian foster and adoptive families. The next round of
required training (STARS) will begin on Thursday, Sept. 20. It
will run for nine consecutive Thursday evenings from 6-9pm.

The Traveling Chalice Program is designed to
pray for religious vocations. Parishioners are
asked to take the chalice home and display it in
a place of honor, where all throughout the week
they can notice it. Parishioners will pray around
the chalice every night for vocations to the priesthood and
religious life. Prayers for vocations will accompany the chalice.
You can choose which Mass your family would like to receive the
chalice. We have openings for the Traveling Chalice in
September and October. If you are interested in signing up for a

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
There seems to be such a lack of peace in our
world today...how important it is that we pray!
On the chapel bulletin board there are copies of a
special Marianist Mission Rosary that guides us to
pray for peoples of all nations. Stop in and pray
this beautiful rosary or feel free to take one or
more copies home to pray and share. Prayer is indeed our most
powerful weapon against the evils of our time, and the rosary is
proven to be among the most powerful of prayers.

EXERCISE FOR ARTHRITIS - BEGINS SEPTEMBER 4TH
Come join this group exercise and education program designed
for those with arthritis and related diseases. Our goal is to reduce
pain and stiffness, and help maintain or improve mobility, muscle
strength, and function.
Classes are free and held at Kirkwood United Methodist Church,
201 West Adams, in room 110 from 1:00-2:00PM. This on-going
class meets every Tuesday. Class begins September 4, meeting
every Tuesday from 1:00-2:00PM.
We will be sitting or standing for exercises. Wear comfortable
clothing and non-slip shoes. All abilities welcome.
Classes are sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation. Carol
Connolly, parish nurse, is the certified instructor.

ST. PETER PRAYS PARISH PRAYER BOOKLET
The Year of Prayer is coming to an end and we would like to
celebrate this by collecting prayers from our parish families. We
will create a St. Peter Parish Prayer Booklet that will be available
to all parishioners at the end of September. We ask you to submit
your family's favorite prayer or a personal family prayer for
consideration.
Please submit your prayer by either sending an email to

online form, or filling out the form in the church pews.
ST. PETER’S YOGA CLASS
WHERE HAS IT GONE?
We took a break for the summer. The number of people
interested in yoga class was dwindling in the spring. We will
continue our break for a while.

SILVER STREAKS EXERCISE PROGRAM AT ST. PETER…
Come join us on Wednesday afternoons from 2:00 to 3:00 PM in
Ursuline Hall in the Msgr. Deutschmann Room.
This is a good hour-long workout that isn’t too strenuous. It will
get you moving and keep those joints mobile. Silver Streaks is a
chair-based class to benefit people with arthritis, stiffness or who
just want to keep moving. Maybe you are looking for something
to get you started, to go with your walking program or to add
some variety. The program is designed to improve overall
flexibility, balance and strength. Try it, you will like it. Cost is
only $5.00 per session, payable on the day you attend. The
instructor, Holly Ohmes, is certified by the Arthritis Foundation.

200TH JUBILEE
The Sisters of Loretto celebration of the 200th Jubilee of their
founding will take place September 15, 2012 at the 4:30PM
liturgy at St. Pius V Parish, Grand and Utah Streets, St. Louis.
Archbishop Robert Carlson and Father John Vien will celebrate
with the community. Awards will be given to four women active
in area mission work. A reception will follow the liturgy. All
former students, colleagues, and friends of Loretto are most
welcome.
ROSARY FOR THE USA
In the May 18th issue of the St. Louis Review, there was an
article about a Catholic from Phoenix, Arizona who was deeply
concerned about the United States. While praying the rosary, he
realized that the 50 Hail Mary prayers could be said for our 50
States. He designated the first three decades as prayers intended
for the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Branches of our
government. The fourth is dedicated to state and local
government as well as police and firefighters. The fifth decade is
devoted to the U.S. military personnel.
Please join your fellow parishioners every Sunday at 4:45
(except holidays) in front of Mary’s statue to say the Rosary
for our country and our populace. The Gathering Area is
available if the weather is not favorable.

STS. TERESA & BRIDGET PANTRY
Thank you St. Peter parish for all of the food you donated to the
food pantry for August. Our donations are making a big
difference for many hungry people.
A special THANK YOU this month goes to Bill Biele and Dan
Imig for delivering all of our donations. Your help is always
appreciated.
Next delivery is SEPTEMBER 17TH. Bring your donations by
any time.
STS. TERESA AND BRIDGET FOOD PANTRY . . .
For those of you who are not aware of why and how this food
pantry collection got started please read below:
After visiting with Fr. Gary Meier, then the pastor of Sts. Teresa
& Bridget (located on Grand & N. Market, St. Louis City), he
explained how the parish and community are in great need. They
have a food pantry that serves their area, open one day a week for
3 hours. Even though another county parish supplies canned
goods once a month, the high demand keeps their shelves bare.
They have had to reduce what they're able to give to those who
come for help to a bag that holds just enough food for 2 meals.
THIS IS WHERE WE COME IN. By collecting canned goods
MONTHLY we can help make other peoples' lives better and
respond to Jesus' call to feed Him when He is hungry.
Donations are delivered on the 3rd Monday of every month.
Please bring canned food in plastic bags about 4 days prior to
the monthly delivery date (3rd Monday each month) to our
home, placing it on the front porch.
DROP OFF LOCATION ~
Candy and John Behl, 319 East Adams, Kirkwood (block and a
half east of the YMCA). Please donate cans that are no larger
than 30 ounces, anything larger is difficult to carry for all of us.
ST. PATRICK CENTER FOR THE HOMELESS
Please keep this important ministry in mind on your next
shopping trip. Breakfast bars, granola type bars, chips, cookies,
water, and soda are some of the suggested donations. The Health
Department requires that all food items come prepackaged.
Donations are accepted everyday. Please note the new drop off
location: 450 Burns Avenue, Kirkwood. A green tub will be
located on our front porch the first week of the month and will be
placed on the side of our house the rest of the month. Call
Jennifer Moritz 909-6756 with any questions. Thank you for
supporting this ministry!
KIRK CARE NEEDS FOOD DELIVERERS
If you have a couple of hours a week during the day to gather
food from the pantry and deliver to a couple of families, Kirk
Care could use your help. All food deliveries are within the
Kirkwood R-7 school district. Food deliveries have doubled over
the last year to over 70 per month. Please consider helping us
help families in need of food by calling Martha Aschbacher at
