The importance of door engineering is often 

underestimated during overall planning. 

Architectural, design and organisational 

guidelines as well as fi re protection, security, 

barrier freedom and appropriate escape 

route requirements make doors a cross-trade, 

complex construction element. The object 

"door" has become a highly complex planning 

exercise. 

The GU project team provides advisory services 

based on functional models and derives

Directives and their meaning/eff ects 

GU hardware solutions that comply with the standards 

Barrier-free is not the same as "disability-friendly". The German 

Standard 18040 also takes restrictions, such as pushing a pram, 

carrying bulky luggage or walking on crutches into account. 

Barrier-free construction increases the degree of safety and 

comfort for everyone. Irrespective of age and health, the usefulness 

of a building and therefore quality of life is significantly 

improved. This makes barrier-free construction not only a social 

responsibility, it also makes a significant contribution towards 

safeguarding the future of a building and thus protecting the investment 

in the long term. Barrier-freedom is becoming a basic 

requirement to be met by a building and products that satisfy 

these requirements will achieve commercial success. 

In DIN 18040, the requirements for public buildings and 

requirements for private apartments and houses are defined 

in parts 1 and 2 respectively. These essentially deal with the 

dimensional requirements, threshold height, hardware (lever 

sets), operating forces for opening of doors and windows and 

the requirements and regulations in relation to automatic door 

systems and drives. 

The requirements for the standard are defined as protective 

goals and a degree of freedom of interpretation is therefore 

possible when it comes to implementation. 

We have the right products for these requirements, such 

as automatic sliding doors, escape doors, motor-driven locks 

or window opening systems, system thresholds, RWA/SHEV 

systems for barrier-free ventilation and much more. These

Retrofi ttable, compact, conforming to regulations and standards 

At fi rst sight the possibility of escaping from a building at 

all times seems to contradict the requirements of maximum 

protection against burglary. 

However, the new system concepts from the Gretsch-Unitas 

Group make it easy to meet the ever increasing demands 

placed on escape and rescue routes today. 

New escape door packages! 

New developments in escape door security: The packages 

'EVT' (electronically locked touch bar) and 'EVP' (electronically 

locked panic lock), in conjunction with the FTNT escape 

door control system, secure the door with little installation 

eff ort. 

Confl ict between regulatory standards solved! 

HM-F FT is the fi rst automatic sliding door system to have 

an approval for use in rescue routes in accordance with 

current directives (EltVTR); the system provides a safe and 

convenient solution never before thought possible. 

Retrofi ttable escape door monitoring system! 

Securing doors without having to lock them additionally is 

possible by means of the approach area monitoring system. 

The system builds an inhibition threshold which protects 

the door against "misuse". It is even approved for use on fi re 

rated doors, regardless of the door material. 

Everything under control! 

All escape doors and their individual security features can be 

monitored and controlled centrally with the BKS bus control 

panel or the visualisation software.

and door control with fi ngerprint scanner or code keypads, 

the house entrance door concept by the Gretsch-Unitas 

Group sets a new standard for increased security and convenience 

in house entrance doors. 

Features like the identical installation dimensions of the 

optional operating elements (fi nger scanner or keypad), the 

small number of system components and the use of preassembled

within a master key system using the new SE 

lock. The transponder access rights are saved 

in the lock. This enables the lock to be used 

directly with the transponder, without using 

a separate wall reader, so the door can be

Skilled in the development of innovative opening mechanisms 

and specialised in every method of facade opening, we have 

been a competent partner for many years when it comes 

to making your visions come true. By bringing the complex 

requirements of ventilation elements in the building envelope 

in line with the demands of aesthetical architecture and 

with the instructions of planners, metal designers and profi le 

system suppliers, we fi nd the best solution for you. 

Together with all leading profi le system suppliers, planning 

offi ces and fabricators we have developed and implemented a 

multitude of sophisticated facade opening solutions. 

For example, we further improved the parallel off set window, 

a window type which has been known for years. For the 

fi rst time, fl oor-to-ceiling window elements can be opened 

manually. The fall protection, integrated in the hardware, 

makes the use of the elements possible without having to 

provide extra safety measures on the outside or inside. 

New legal requirements (e.g. the German Energy Saving Regulation 

EnEV) demand a glass construction which, together 

with modern architecture, will lead to higher sash weights. 

Ventilation units weighing over 400 kg are no longer an 

exception. Projecting top-hung and parallel off set window 

hardware has therefore been developed to take more weight. 

The sliding/pivot window is a pivot hung window which 

is easy to operate and also incorporates an integrated fall 

protection function.

Ventilation concepts for energy effi ciency and moisture protection 

The high density of modern building envelopes 

makes ventilation necessary. Suffi cient 

ventilation must be ensured in structural, 

ventilation engineering, hygienic and energetic 

aspects. But ventilation and energy 

conservation aspects aren't necessarily 

mutually exclusive. Ventilate as much as 

necessary, but as little as possible. 

What are the eff ects of inadequate 

ventilation? 

Humidity levels that are too high increase 

the risk of mould growth. Mould can damage 

one's health. The apartment or building 

can also be damaged, resulting in costly 

renovations. 

Example: in a 4 person household, approx. 

6 – 12 kg of water in the form of water 

vapour is released per day. 

What is a ventilation concept? 

The minimum level of ventilation for moisture 

protection must be ensured, independent 

of the user. This is the design task.

Adjustable ventilation operated by a lever, 

cord or scissor action arm. 

The ventilators are made of extruded 

aluminium. The thermal break reduces the 

transfer of cold or heat from the inside to

large heavy door elements that are frequently made from 

standard window profi les. Parallel-Slide and Tilt&Slide 

hardware is especially suited for this kind of application in

Revolving doors are used wherever impressive 

entrances are needed. They are 

primarily used to provide public buildings, 

hotels, banks, insurance offi ces or airports 

with a striking entrance. One of the key advantages 

is that the three or four-leaf doors 

do not create any draughts in the foyer or 

lobby. A slim canopy with a minimum depth 

of 175 mm provides space for the drive unit 

and lighting. This means that extensive use 

of glass is possible. 

A night lock protects revolving doors from 

being misused outside of operating hours. 

The GRA revolving door has many options 

and therefore off ers more or less unlimited 

design freedom and integrates perfectly into 

the facade. 

If a revolving door has to off er a high degree
