commitments should be linked to scientific authority only if they follow from, not<br />

guide, the research. In order to safeguard the relevance <strong>of</strong> anchoring research in<br />

social and political reality, it must be possible for the research and its conclusions to<br />

receive the epithet ‘critical’ without their necessarily being conducted and<br />

formulated – as <strong>of</strong>ten seems to be the case now – by scholars with pr<strong>of</strong>essed and<br />

well-defined political commitments. (2001, p. 66)<br />

Furthermore, Flowerdew’s assertion that “…analysis is the result <strong>of</strong> an individual. Inevitably<br />

it will be marked by the individual sensibilities and style <strong>of</strong> the author” (1999, p. 1097), and<br />

“…susceptible to multiple interpretations” (1999, p. 1096) are kept in mind in the<br />

construction <strong>of</strong> this project. Also mindful and related to a public conflict between Tyrwhitt-<br />

Drake and Flowerdew (as played out in a number <strong>of</strong> Journal <strong>of</strong> Pragmatics articles during<br />

1999) is the importance to make clear and obvious personal interactions or background<br />

information that the researcher has about data that has been collected and analysed. Described<br />

as ‘invisible to the reader’, this information should be made clear and obvious, to ensure that<br />

integrity is retained and disclosures <strong>of</strong> the researcher are evident. This is echoed through and<br />

aligned with the work <strong>of</strong> researchers such as Blommaert (2001), who asserts that the<br />

contextualising <strong>of</strong> texts used for data collection is vital for a comprehensive analysis to take<br />

place, writing:<br />

This is the ‘context’ for the rest <strong>of</strong> the analysis, and this context is <strong>of</strong>fered as an<br />

unquestionable, untheorized set <strong>of</strong> ‘facts’. The source <strong>of</strong> such contextual accounts is<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten obliquely referred to as on-site observation… (again, untheorized and without<br />

discussing any explicit procedures). Their function, however, is crucial: they are<br />

central contextualising features that allow for claims about an ‘insiders’ perspective’<br />

(Wodak, 1997, p. 178) on the communication patterns studies in CDA. (2001, p. 16)<br />

Blommaert emphasizes this, as he considers that many researchers do not adequately (if at<br />

all) <strong>of</strong>fer a critical contextual explanation <strong>of</strong> how or where data emerges from, and claims<br />

that such information is kept from the reader, made known to the researcher only, to the<br />

detriment <strong>of</strong> the research validity.<br />

3.7.2 Practical disclosure <strong>of</strong> researcher.<br />

A significant component <strong>of</strong> the research which makes up this project is the analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

textbooks that have been used in Queensland schools. Nicholls asserts it is important to<br />
