Teen Dating Violence
Dating violence affects individuals regardless
of age but teens are particularly vulnerable.
Young women, ages 16 to 24 years, experience the
highest per capita rate of relationship violence
according to the U.S. Department of
Justice.
What is teen dating
violence?
As with domestic violence,
dating violence is one partner
attempting to maintain power
and control over the other
through various forms of
verbal, emotional, physical
and/or sexual abuse. It can
occur in the context of dating
or long-term relationships.
There are several factors that
make teen dating violence
different from adult domestic
violence. Lack of experience
in dating relationships makes
teens more vulnerable to isolation
and gender stereotypes. Teens may
find it difficult to develop new and
mature relationships with peers of both
sexes and may find it hard to stay focused
on school and get good grades. Some teens may have
romanticized ideals about relationships or love and
may confuse jealousy, possessiveness, and abuse with
signs of love and affection. A teen’s fear of losing their
newly gained independence may deter them from
seeking help from their parents or authority figures.

Dear Friends,
It is spring. The snow has finally
stopped falling. The trees have
buds, the tulips are blooming
and we are seeing blue skies
more often.
Life at Eastside Domestic
Violence Program is blooming
as well. We recently had two new babies born while at the
shelter. The cooing and oohing fills the shelter with the
promise of new life and the assurance of hope. Two women
have come to us to help start a new life with their newborns
that is safe, secure and promises the freedom and dignity that
they deserve.
All children have the right to a childhood filled with fun,
adventure, smiles and laughter. We recently took our shelter
children to the zoo. Many of them have never seen wild
animals. There was excitement and joy as they shared their
new adventure together. They laughed and played and were

children again, breaking out of the all too often “adult role”
they have had to play.
At EDVP our job is to let them be children; to talk about
their feelings, their joy and sorrow. We are breaking the cycle
of abuse by presenting options and learning opportunities for
change. Recently one of our teens coming to shelter slept at
night with her shoes on. After much discussion and a little
trust our advocate found out she always slept with her shoes
on in case she needed to run for help. As one of our staff said
“all children deserve to sleep with their shoes off.”
Your support and encouragement plays an important role in
ending domestic violence in future generations. As we work
with the youngest victims of abuse we see the promise and
hope of a domestic violence free generation. Together we can
make that a reality. As life blooms at EDVP help us let little
ones sleep with their shoes off.

CHILL
Ready. Set. Ooof! Again. Ready. Set. Ouch! Again. Ready. Set. “I QUIT!” That was the general sequence of
learning how to snowboard. This winter five children ages 9-15 from My Friend’s Place transitional housing
program had the opportunity to participate in Burton’s CHILL Snowboarding Program where they received
six weeks of free snowboarding lessons, rental gear from head to toe, and transportation to The Summit at
Snoqualmie.
This program went beyond fun and taught our children so much about themselves and their own abilities to
conquer things that are tough. The CHILL coordinators encouraged the group, “The mountain will not conquer
us; we will conquer the mountain!”
Throughout the six weeks we implemented “words of the week”: Patience, Persistence, Integrity, Responsibility,
Courage, and Pride. Taking each word and seeing how we apply it to our everyday lives and how we can bring
them to the experience of learning how to snowboard.
Once the kids took on patience and persistence they quickly realized that they love to snowboard. Throughout
the program the kids expressed how much being on the mountain meant to them and how they looked forward
to each lesson. They enjoyed learning how to master their turns, stops, and maneuvers. “It was a great experience
to see the children so excited about something and to really be proud of themselves,” said Jen, EDVP’s Children’s
Advocate who accompanied them on all the lessons. “They really saw that they could do anything when they put
their minds to it.”
Week six, on the last run down the mountain, they agreed to go fast and not fall. Making it down the mountain
in one piece, Jen said to the kids, “You did it!” A thirteen year old girl replied, “I did do it! I really conquered the
mountain!”

reaching out and communicating with your child or friend about abuse.
The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence states that one in
five teenage girls are victims of dating violence, having experienced
physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse by a dating partner while in
high school. There is a growing need for dating violence education,
better access to services and support, intervention with teens who may
be abusive, and more adequate resources for teen victims of violence.
Reaching out to children, adolescents, and young adults with support
and violence prevention is critical to preventing domestic violence and
ensuring that children grow up to be healthy adults.
Tips for Parents on Discussing Dating Violence
How do I get started?
Finding the right moment to talk with your teen may seem daunting.
Find a quiet place. Take your teen for a drive or to a quiet café with no
distractions. You obviously want good results. There are two goals: Your
first goal is to have a productive conversation. This means you want your
child to know you are a good resource and a non-judgmental listener.
Second, is to give your teen realistic strategies for safety and dealing
with the situation.
A good way to begin is by simply asking, “How’s it going?” Ease into
this conversation so your teen won’t feel like they are on the spot.
Acknowledge their answer and feelings. Depending on their mood, the
next step may be asking, “What are your friends’ dating relationships
like?” What’s the difference between “dating” and “committed”
relationships? How long do the couples you know stay together? Do they
make any kind of commitment to each other? Are there certain things
girls want that boys don’t? Are there certain things that boys want that
girls don’t? These questions may give you insight into how your teen
views relationships. You may find stereotypical themes in your teen’s
view of relationships or you may find your teen thinks mutual respect is
key in any relationship. You will only find out by asking.
You may want to ask your teen if they have ever seen any abusive
behavior between two people who are going out. Offer a scenario. “A
boy sees his girlfriend talking to another guy, so he pulls her by the arm
and yanks her away.” Would you call this violent? What does your son
think about this behavior? Would you be shocked if your daughter said
it was “just what guys do” and “no big deal”?
What makes a healthy relationship?
All couples have disagreements or arguments. What matters is
that arguments remain fair and don’t escalate out of control. A
healthy relationship is one where there is mutual respect and open
communication of feelings. Respect of individuality and personal
boundaries where one person does not hurt the other emotionally,
physically, or sexually. Talk to your teen about the healthy relationships
in your life, including friendships, and what made them good
relationships. Also begin discussing the warning signs with your teen.
Sometimes a teenager just wants someone to listen. Not someone to jump
in and solve their problems for them. Remember to not “fix” but to listen
and offer skills and support that set the foundation for doing it themselves.

your teen.

The Importance of Legal
Advocacy

EDVP Legal Advocate
After years of abuse and isolation Lisa finds the courage to leave
her husband, but can’t afford an attorney to file for divorce.
She’s afraid for her safety if she leaves, and is afraid that her abuser
will take her children from her. Emma is arrested for assaulting her
husband. She willingly admits that she struck him – after all, to her,
it was self-defense - but her attorney doesn’t seem to understand why
his behavior warranted her defensive response. Terri called CPS after
she found out that her abusive boyfriend had sexually abused her
daughter. She was shocked when the social worker decided to remove
the children from her care, blaming Terri for “failing to protect” her
daughter from the abuse.
As illustrated above, survivors of domestic violence face a
wide variety of legal issues, including family law, dependency,
immigration, criminal law (either as victim or defendant), housing,
and employment issues. A majority of survivors face these issues
alone, without the benefit of legal counsel. Navigating the legal
system alone is confusing and difficult for anyone. However, even
a survivor who is represented by an attorney may discover that her
attorney lacks any education about or understanding of domestic
violence, which frequently results in poor outcomes for survivors.
EDVP advocates provide support, information, and appropriate
referrals to help survivors navigate the legal system. Trained
advocates can accompany survivors to court, provide moral support
and help the survivor understand the process. We can help survivors
communicate with their attorneys and help attorneys and other
professionals to understand survivors’ experiences in order to
better represent their needs. To the extent possible, we advocate
for survivors within the legal system, collaborating with other
professionals to help survivors reach their goals.
The importance of legal advocacy in survivors’ lives cannot be
overstated. Many survivors face legal proceedings which will decide
the most important things in their lives: child custody, physical
protection, their very freedom. The goal of EDVP’s legal program
is to assist survivors in navigating the legal system to gain the most
positive outcome possible. In addition, we are constantly becoming
aware of new issues and populations to serve, and hope to be able to
continue to expand and improve our existing services and grow into
new areas.

Volunteer Spotlight
Joan and Ed Sputh and their daughter Katie are long time
donors. They have been creating beautiful Easter baskets
for the children in EDVP’s shelters for many years, since Katie
was little. They shop together and assemble elaborate baskets.
The children’s reactions are the same each year – big, bright
eyes at the sight of these amazing baskets filled with all sorts of
goodies!
Last year Joan generously donated new, industrial strength
dishwashers for shelter. Communal living takes its toll
on appliances, and when Joan found out we needed new
dishwashers she didn’t even hesitate.
In January 2008, Joan decided she wanted to do more. Joan
asked what our current shelter needs were and we answered new
computers for My Friends Place transitional shelter. Joan went
home that night and came up with a plan: she would throw an
auction and purchase new computers for the entire shelter with
the proceeds! And she did just that.
“With the support of my husband, family and friends we
decided to put the auction together. Everything fell into place
with the support of many, many individuals and businesses. We
are so blessed and fortunate to have the love and support we
have from so many. When I believe in something, I move
forward and don’t flinch.... Helping others is a passion for me.”
The auction revenue and private donations totaled over
$20,000. Joan’s passion and energy paid off. A few weeks later
a delivery from Dell arrived – 10 new computers for the shelter’s
community computer room, teen room, and staff offices! Shelter
residents use the computers for job searches and the children
and teens use the computers for homework. “We also purchased
and assembled 22 essential baskets for the moms and 36 baskets

appropriate. In
addition, we
provided dinner
for the residents
along with gift
certificates as
well,” said Joan.
Joan not only
spent many
hours creating a
fabulous fundraiser
but it was
a friend-raiser
too. She invited
people to her event that were new to the issue of domestic
violence and helped educate them about the need in our
community for support for victims of abuse and their children.
“Charity is contagious.” Joan’s daughter Katie, a student council
representative in her school, recently assisted in organizing
her own fund-raiser. She promoted EDVP as the charitable
organization and with a vote from the student body most of the
proceeds are being presented to EDVP this May.

Barbara Simonson
Barbara recently completed her
third year term on the Windermere
Foundation; a position she loves and
where she became aware of EDVP
and the important work they do in
the community. The mission of the
Windermere Foundation is to give
back to the community. Their main
focus is the homeless, women, and
children. The EDVP Hotel/Motel Voucher Program was a perfect
fit to their mission and in the last three years the Windermere
Foundation has granted $25,000 to this program. “It is my hope
this will be an ongoing grant,” says Barbara. “I will continue to do
everything I can to make this happen.” The grant funds come from
closings and the personal contributions of agents and owners. “I
grew up in a home where domestic violence was the norm; EDVP
seems like a perfect place for me to contribute my time, energy and
gifts.”
Barbara has been in real estate for nearly 20 years. “Working with
people, serving and giving is my business.” Barbara also serves
on the board of Royal Family Kids Camp (RFKC), a one week
summer camp for abused & neglected children in the foster care
system.

EDVP is holding a Shelter Day of Caring for My Friend’s Place
transitional shelter on June 25th! My Friend’s Place is receiving a
make-over top to bottom. You can help!
We are cleaning, painting, gardening, and more! As we prepare for
this make-over we are asking the community to help off set the cost
by donating one or more items from the list below.
Items Needed:
For the garden: Potting soil, gardening gloves, gardening tools –
spades, rakes, hand held shovels, gardening shears.
Inside the shelter: Shower curtains, general bathroom décor items,
toilet brushes, bath mats, towels, cleaning supplies that are ecofriendly
and non-toxic.
Décor & furniture: Hanging art work – paintings, prints, etc.,
furniture – new - two single sofa chairs (vinyl or leather), side tables,
coffee tables.
Outdoor repairs: Nails and fence repair materials, window screens
(call for material information and dimensions). Gift certificates to
stores like Home Depot or Lowes.
