If, upon investigation, <strong>the</strong> references<br />

given by <strong>the</strong> applicant prove satisfactory,<br />

<strong>the</strong> above receipt may be exchanged<br />

for a ticket <strong>of</strong> membership.<br />

Should such references prove unsatisfactory<br />

as to <strong>the</strong> good moral character <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> applicant <strong>the</strong> fee will be refunded.<br />

The membership fee is payable annually<br />

in advance. Tickets are not transferable.<br />

Garden was opened to <strong>the</strong> public<br />

September, 1875, and Is open every day<br />

in <strong>the</strong> year. The grounds consist <strong>of</strong> approximately<br />

60 acres <strong>of</strong> land, with lawns,<br />

enclosures, drives, walks and groves.<br />

The collection consists <strong>of</strong> 600 animals,<br />

1,200 birds and 150 reptiles, and is one<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most complete in <strong>the</strong> world. The<br />

garden is operated by a board <strong>of</strong> fifteen<br />

directors, and is not run for pr<strong>of</strong>it, a<br />

provision <strong>of</strong> its organization being that<br />

.all net earnings, if any, be expended for<br />

new animals or buildings.<br />
