THE CHILDRENS HOME.<br />

ameliorate and elevate <strong>the</strong> condition <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> children <strong>of</strong> poor and unfortunate<br />

parents, by procuring for <strong>the</strong> homeless<br />

and destitute who may be committed to<br />

it, in accordance with its charter, permanent<br />

country homes in Chistian families,<br />

where <strong>the</strong>y will- be trained in habits <strong>of</strong><br />

Industry and receive a suitable English<br />

education. (2) To clo<strong>the</strong>, feed and<br />

Instruct such children gratuitously, so<br />

long as <strong>the</strong>y remain in <strong>the</strong> Children's<br />

Home. (3) To afford a temporary home<br />

to poor children, whose parents, thus<br />

aided, may be enabled in a short time to<br />

support <strong>the</strong>m in. homes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own;<br />

and such o<strong>the</strong>r religious and charitable<br />

work as <strong>the</strong> trustees may at any time<br />

adopt.<br />

children, averaging in attendance about<br />

300; a sewing-scJiool <strong>of</strong> about 250 girls;<br />

a cooking school <strong>of</strong> 50 girls; mo<strong>the</strong>rs'<br />

meetings; a finely-equipped bath; a<br />

gymnasium; a music school; a medical<br />

and dentistry department; a district<br />

nurse; a" social settlement <strong>of</strong> fifteen<br />

resident workers; boys' and girls' clubs;<br />

millinery and shirt waist clubs; home<br />

libraries; a splendidly arranged suite <strong>of</strong><br />

men's club rooms, which any self-respecting<br />

man may join. In addition to<br />

this preventive work <strong>the</strong>re is given<br />

about $2,000 a year in relief to <strong>the</strong> poor.<br />

It runs a lodging house for homeless<br />

men.<br />

THE OHIO HUMANE SOCIETY.<br />

(For <strong>the</strong> Prevention <strong>of</strong> Cruelty to Children<br />

and Animals.)<br />

and Treasurer. All complaints <strong>of</strong><br />

cruelty and neglect to children and animals<br />

should be sent to <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Society, 24 E. 9th. The name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> informer<br />

will be held in confidence and<br />

only used in case prosecution becomes<br />

necessary. The Society is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

active out-door agencies for <strong>the</strong> protection<br />

and rescue <strong>of</strong> children. In <strong>the</strong> care<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se unfortunate children, <strong>the</strong> society<br />

co-operates with <strong>the</strong> numerous houses <strong>of</strong><br />

refuge, children's homes, orphan and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r asylums, hospitals, nurseries, charities,<br />

etc. Its agents seek out and investigate<br />

cases <strong>of</strong> abuse and neglect <strong>of</strong><br />

children, hunt up truant and icriminal<br />

parents, and compel <strong>the</strong>m to care for<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir children, and ga<strong>the</strong>r up homeless<br />

and dependent children. Offenders are<br />

prosecuted when necessary, and <strong>the</strong> little<br />

waifs are turned over to <strong>the</strong> permanent<br />

care <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r organizations and in-<br />

Sititutlons. In 1883 <strong>the</strong> Society secured<br />

<strong>the</strong> passage <strong>of</strong> a law providing a fine<br />

<strong>of</strong> $200 and Imprisonment for six months<br />

for parents failing to provide for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

children. The enforcement <strong>of</strong> this law is<br />

having a most salutary effect. Hardly a<br />

day passes in which one or more cases<br />

are not reported <strong>of</strong> dissipated and licentious<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>rs who have deserted <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

families, leaving <strong>the</strong> wife to eke out a<br />

scanty existence as best she can at<br />

<strong>the</strong> wash-tub or with <strong>the</strong> aeedle, or to<br />

live upon public charity. The courts<br />

have co-operated earnestly In <strong>the</strong> enforcement<br />

<strong>of</strong> this law. Whenever an<br />

<strong>of</strong>fender <strong>of</strong> this kind is brought before<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, a heavy sentence is put over his<br />

head, and he is -allo-vfed to go on his<br />

good behavior. It is seldom necessary<br />

to bring him in a second time. It Is
