LEADERSHIP IN THE ARTS: EDUCATION
THE RAINBOW COMPANY YOUTH THEATRE, LAS VEGAS
Marking 30 years of service to the Las Vegas community, the Rainbow Company
Youth Theatre has presented more than 150 professional productions of new
works and prominent plays to nearly 540,000 audience members. Jody Johnston,
the company's founder, eloquently expressed the magic of theatre, “Every live
performance is unique. It lives for the moment…and is a shared experience
between actor and audience. …by doing quality productions designed for the child
audience, we can instill in these young critics an understanding... and a love of live
theatre that will insure an audience for years to come. Our future lies with them.”
Guided by Artistic Director Karen McKenney, the Rainbow Company staff
consists of professionals with distinguished records and a commitment to teach
students new ideas through the theatre. Whether during its annual season, at
school workshops and classes, or through the management of the Rainbow
Company Ensemble, an intensive theatre program for 40 students, the focus of the
organization is always on the development of skills, confidence and discipline for
youth, through direct participation in the arts.Anthony Del Valle, theatre critic for
the Las Vegas Review-Journal, noted,“The Rainbow Company demands a lot from
its students, and the students deliver much in return. The payoff goes beyond just
good performances. These kids are learning to function as part of a team, to work
hard, and then to enjoy the rewards of their dedication.”
