EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS
GAILMARIE PAHMEIER, RENO
A widely published poet and educator, Gailmarie Pahmeier writes of ordinary
experiences with a voice that is described as uniquely her own.A graduate of the
Creative Writing Program at the University of Arkansas, Pahmeier is an instructor
of creative writing and literature at the University of Nevada, Reno where she has
been honored with the Alan Bible Teaching Excellence Award and the University
Distinguished Teacher Award. Her students and colleagues consider her a mentor
who honors the individual voice, an academic with an extraordinary depth of
knowledge and a writer of intelligence, wit and personality. Her literary
accomplishments include the Chambers Memorial Award, a Witter Bynner
Foundation Poetry Fellowship, the Paumonok Poetry Award, the Silver Pen
Award from the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame and two Artist Fellowships from
the Nevada Arts Council. Pahmeier also served on the board of the Nevada Arts
Council as a gubernatorial appointee. Her work has been widely published in
literary journals and anthologies, including Webster Studies, Rio Grande review,
Pinyon Poetry, neon, Northern Contours, Slipstream, Mudfish and Interim, among
others. Her publications include What Emma Loves, With Respect for Distance
and The House on Breakaheart Road. Reflecting on the work in The House on
Breakaheart Road, Oregon poet Dorianne Laux commented, "Pahmeier's is a
purely American poetry, a tough female vision that includes the language of
baseballs and bread baking, well-tuned transmissions and hard-packed snow,
truckstops and ‘wound-red lipstick’.”
EXCELLENCE IN FOLK AND TRADITIONAL ARTS
MEXICO VIVO , LAS VEGAS
Founded in 1995 by Ixela Gutierrez, Mexico Vivo preserves and presents the
traditions of folkloric dance, music, theatre, pageantry and folk traditions of
Mexico, Spain and Latin America, as well as Latin traditions of the United States.
Mexico Vivo celebrates multiculturalism and diversity through its own
distinguished performing troupe, Mexico Vivo Dance Company, a dance academy
and summer camp, guest artist residencies, unique ‘informances’ for schools
throughout southern Nevada, master classes and workshops for both children and
adults, and participation in national and international festivals. Mexico Vivo Dance
Company produces the annual Las Vegas International Folk Festival where
performers from around the world celebrate dance, music, theater and food, and
workshops examine the cultural traditions of the United States, Latin America,
Europe, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. Gutierrez studied under the direction of
many distinguished instructors at The National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico
City, and performed with the Amalia Hernandez Folkoric Ballet of Mexico and as
a soloist with the National Folkoric Ballet of Mexico. Energized by the leadership
of Gutierrez, Mexico Vivo is visible throughout the community - sharing its stories
and culture. Bobbie Ann Howell, Cultural Center Coordinator of the East Las
Vegas Community/Senior Center wrote, "Passing on knowledge and passion is the
way these art forms can continue and evolve. Mexico Vivo is dedicated to that task
and serves as an example to all of us of what can be achieved."
LEADERSHIP IN THE ARTS: EDUCATION
THE RAINBOW COMPANY YOUTH THEATRE, LAS VEGAS
Marking 30 years of service to the Las Vegas community, the Rainbow Company
Youth Theatre has presented more than 150 professional productions of new
works and prominent plays to nearly 540,000 audience members. Jody Johnston,
the company's founder, eloquently expressed the magic of theatre, “Every live
performance is unique. It lives for the moment…and is a shared experience
between actor and audience. …by doing quality productions designed for the child
audience, we can instill in these young critics an understanding... and a love of live
theatre that will insure an audience for years to come. Our future lies with them.”
Guided by Artistic Director Karen McKenney, the Rainbow Company staff
consists of professionals with distinguished records and a commitment to teach
students new ideas through the theatre. Whether during its annual season, at
school workshops and classes, or through the management of the Rainbow
Company Ensemble, an intensive theatre program for 40 students, the focus of the
organization is always on the development of skills, confidence and discipline for
youth, through direct participation in the arts.Anthony Del Valle, theatre critic for
the Las Vegas Review-Journal, noted,“The Rainbow Company demands a lot from
its students, and the students deliver much in return. The payoff goes beyond just
good performances. These kids are learning to function as part of a team, to work
hard, and then to enjoy the rewards of their dedication.”
LEADERSHIP IN THE ARTS: INDIVIDUAL
JILL BERRYMAN, RENO
With the Sierra Arts Foundation since 1995, first as Program Director and now
as Executive Director, Jill Berryman has been instrumental in the success of many
of the organization's major initiatives, including Arts Alternatives, a year-round
program targeting at-risk youth at alternative schools and detention centers, and
the acquisition and conversion of the Riverside Hotel into the Riverside Artist
Lofts, a project that has been recognized with numerous national awards.
Berryman's commitment to the arts and arts education expands beyond the
workday and Reno city limits. In his nomination letter John Fowler, president of
the Sierra Arts Foundation board, wrote, “Position and leadership are not the
same. Positions are merely platforms from which leadership can be performed. As
a leader, Jill has vision and is willing to invest herself totally to make it happen. As
a leader she directly attracts others to her passion and empowers them to
participate at levels they would not otherwise reach.” Her passion has led
Berryman to a dizzying array of commitments, including the development of Youth
ArtWorks, and board and committee work for the Kennedy Center Arts
Education Alliance, the Nevada Alliance for Arts Education, Western States Arts
Federation and the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities. Originally
from Smith Valley, NV, Berryman earned a BA in Print Journalism, with a minor in
Anthropology from the University of Nevada, Reno. Before joining Sierra Arts, she
worked in the museum field and as a museums and galleries consultant.
LEADERSHIP IN THE ARTS: ORGANIZATION
GREAT BASIN ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT, WINNEMUCCA
Determined to keep culture alive in Winnemucca following the massive arson fire
that destroyed the historic Nixon Opera House in 1992, a small group of friends
created Great Basin Arts and Entertainment. For 19 years, GBAE has presented a
concert series embodying the musical influences that have shaped the American
experience. Performances have ranged from traditional music from Mainland
China, Celtic Irish and Scottish music from the British Isles and European chamber
music to traditional folk singers and young performers from South Africa. An allvolunteer
organization, GBAE continues to celebrate its community through the
sharing of live music and cultural education. “We might be learning about Cajun
New Year's Day customs one month and the story behind an Irish balled the next,”
noted volunteer and patron Teresa Howell. The community responds in kind, by
welcoming performers with enthusiasm. Mayor Paul J.Vesco wrote in his support
letter, which was also signed by all five council members,“…Great Basin Arts and
Entertainment offers performers the 'Winnemucca experience' by setting them
up in an intimate venue on the National Historic Register [The Basque Martin
Hotel]. Performers traveling through Winnemucca on the way to other
engagements get to have a great relaxing night, performing in a way that reminds
them why they got into performing in the first place.” GBAE chairman Bill Sims
suggests that eastbound travelers on Interstate 80 visit www.gbae.org. They just
may find themselves spending the night in Winnemucca for a great concert and
warm Nevada hospitality.
P A T R O N A G E I N T H E A R T S
JIM NICHOLS, RENO
Jim Nichols serves the State of Nevada through personal, professional and
financial engagement with the arts, while selflessly avoiding the spotlight. His is a
360-degree philanthropic approach, financially and philosophically supporting the
arts as an individual and as the Founder and President of Nichols Consulting
Engineers from 1990-2004. In the north, his largesse is visible in his service as a
trustee of the Sierra Arts Foundation and the Reno Philharmonic, and through his
involvement with numerous arts events. An active member of the Advisory Board
of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Nevada, Reno since the early
1990's, Nichols is the founder of the Forum for Excellence Speakers Series, which
celebrates the role of critical thinking and civic engagement. Nichols' convictions
and statewide connections assisted the Nevada Arts Council and Western States
Arts Federation (WESTAF) to help set into motion the development of an arts
service organization for the Las Vegas Valley.Anthony Radich,WESTAF's Executive
Director, wrote, “In a state where one can easily become overly aligned with a
single region, Jim has long thought in terms of the advancement of the arts
throughout Nevada. In my mind, he represents the model citizen/arts patron. I
wish we could clone him and spread his model behaviors and goodwill across the
other thirteen states in the western region.” One senses, however, Nichols'
contentment in supporting the arts in Nevada as he works on his PhD at the
University, teaches classes and plays trombone with local bands.
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE IN THE ARTS
NEVADA BALLET THEATRE, LAS VEGAS
Co-founded by Nancy Houssels, the Nevada Ballet Theatre celebrates its 35th
year in 2007 as a respected regional ballet company with a commitment to
excellence, education, outreach and community service. For more than three
decades, NBT has marshaled loyalty from volunteers, financial support from
individuals to major corporations, partnerships with schools and educational
institutions, and the collective support of the entire community. The result is a
multi-million dollar arts organization with 39 dancers on contract, 20 full-time
staff members and a dance academy with a faculty of 16 teaching more than 600
students annually. Artistic Director Bruce Steivel, celebrating his 10th year with
NBT, has enriched the company repertoire with new works, while overseeing the
Academy to prepare a new generation of young people to appreciate and
participate in dance. Through its Future Dance program, NBT provides
comprehensive instruction, curricular resources and community services for
elementary and middle school students in partnership with the Clark County
Public Education Foundation. Former member of the Board of Directors and
current Member Emeritus, Elaine Wynn wrote, “I have observed first-hand the
extraordinary development of the company from the initial group of dancers from
the Strip - known as Nevada Dance Theatre - to the present group of
internationally acclaimed performers. I am proud to support one of Nevada's
most important cultural treasures.”
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE IN THE ARTS
D AVID BUGLI, C ARSON CITY
“Giving back to your community…I can think of none who stands above David
Bugli in his years of leadership and personal contributions in providing music and
music education for Carson City and our Capital Region,” writes former Carson
City Mayor Ray Massayko. As an artist, administrator and volunteer, Bugli began
shaping the cultural landscape of northern Nevada upon his arrival in Carson City
in 1983, when he discovered there was no orchestra in the capital city. Under his
direction, the Carson City Symphony, then called the Carson City Chamber
Orchestra, premiered within a year. Under his leadership as conductor and music
director, the Symphony presents a full season each year and has gained an
international reputation for premiering new works of contemporary composers.
The organization now includes the Carson City Chamber Singers and sponsors a
youth orchestra and Strings in the Schools, an after-school program providing free
violin instruction to students in grades 2 through 5. Bugli also serves as director
and keyboardist of the Mile High Jazz Band, which he founded in 1998. Both groups
were selected to participate in Continental Harmony, a national millennium project
of the American Composers Forum and the National Endowment for the Arts. In
1998, he helped bring arts organizations and artists together to form the Carson
Arts Coalition and created an annual summer Jazz Festival in 2004.With a BS in
Music Education from Ithaca College and a Master of Music Degree from the
University of Massachusetts, Bugli decided to go into data processing, a career that
THE ARTISTS
PAUL FORD
Through a competitive review process in November 2006, the NAC Governor's
Arts Awards (GAA) Committee selected Minden artist Paul Ford to create the
artwork presented to the 27th Annual GAA recipients.A former recipient of the
25th GAA Excellence in the Arts Award and a Nevada Arts Council Artist
Fellowship in the visual arts, Ford created contemporary mixed media landscapes
for this year's awards that focused on land usage in Nevada. In describing his
pieces, Ford explained,“Sustained urban growth in the past, present and future is
not without a price in terms of impact upon the natural environment. With
thoughtful planning and cooperation from all factions, I remain optimistic about
Nevada's future growth, but I feel compelled to create works about this change.”
NEVADA OPERA YOUTH CHORUS
The Nevada Opera Youth Chorus (NOYC) gives talented young singers from the
Truckee Meadows and northern Nevada the opportunity to be a member of a
high quality choral ensemble that performs in public with the Nevada Opera and
Reno Philharmonic Orchestra. An auditioned group for youth in the third through
eighth grades, NOYC provides vocal training, music education and public
performance experience.
THE ARTISTS
GWEN CLANCY
An independent filmmaker for 26 years, Gwendolyn Clancy tells the stories of
those who live and work in the Great Basin through her videos and films including
A Cowhand's Song: Crisis on the Range and The Man They Call Will James, narrated by
actor Richard Farnsworth. Her talent at tapping into people's lives has resulted in
grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Nevada Arts Council, Nevada
Humanities and the Gund Foundation, and numerous awards - from the American
Film Festival and the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, to name a few. For the past
eight years, first as the public information officer for the Nevada Department of
Cultural Affairs, and now as an independent contractor, Clancy has hosted and
produced a monthly documentary series, Exploring Nevada, which is broadcast
throughout Nevada and parts of California. Clancy has a BA in French from
Wellesley College, Massachusetts and a MA in Communications from University
NEVADA ARTS COUNCIL
A division of the Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs, the Nevada Arts Council was established as a state agency in 1967.
With offices in Carson City and Las Vegas, the Nevada Arts Council's mission is “to enrich the cultural life of the state through
