Federa State and local governmental, academic, and private organiza<br />

tions participate as members. Affiliations have also bee,! established<br />

with water-data organizations in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa,<br />

Nigeria, Taiwan, and India.<br />

The program Is managed by a central program office !«** ••*"«: f'Bita<br />

Index, (2) a Water Data Sources Directory, and (3) a Water Supply<br />

Computerized Information Directory.<br />

Master Water Data Index<br />

The Master Water Oata Index 1s a central Index that provides informa<br />

tion about sites at which water data are collected nationwide. For<br />

each site, Information Is provided about surface-water quantity,<br />

ground-water quantity, water quality and meteorological data that<br />

have been collected. This Information Includes <strong>the</strong> geographic loca<br />

tion of <strong>the</strong> site, <strong>the</strong> type of site (stream, estuary, well, and so<br />

forth), <strong>the</strong> Identification of <strong>the</strong> source organization, <strong>the</strong> periods of<br />

records for which each type of data are available, <strong>the</strong> major waterdata<br />

parameters measured for each data type and <strong>the</strong>ir frequency of<br />

measurement, and <strong>the</strong> media In which <strong>the</strong> data are available. Cur<br />

rently, over 440,000 sites operated by over 430 organizations have<br />

been Indexed. Of <strong>the</strong>se sites over 13,000 are identified as being<br />

estuary or ocean sites. An additional large number of sites are<br />

Identified as streams or wells that ei<strong>the</strong>r contribute to or are<br />

located within estuarine and coastal areas.<br />

Water Data Sources Directory<br />

The Water Data Sources Directory serves as a central world-wide Index<br />

of organizations that are sources of water or water-related data,<br />

provide services related to <strong>the</strong> dissemination of <strong>the</strong>se data, or are,<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rwise, involved in water-related activities. For each organiza<br />

tion, Information is provided about <strong>the</strong> major orientation of its<br />

activities, offices from which data or services may be obtained; <strong>the</strong><br />

number, type and geographical area of location of water data sites for<br />

which data are available or being collected; o<strong>the</strong>r organizations that
