Fourteen stales and <strong>the</strong> Republic of Puerto Rico currently participate in <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>National</strong> Estuarine Research ReserveSystem. System componentscan be foundin nine of<br />

<strong>the</strong> fourteen Atlantic Coast states, two of <strong>the</strong> five GulfCoast states, three of <strong>the</strong> four west<br />

coast states,a GreatLakes state,andHawaii. Important similarities and differences exist<br />

between component sites in terms of both physicalAiological characteristics and <strong>the</strong><br />

surrounding environment Several sites arelocatedin natural areas; o<strong>the</strong>rs in areasthat<br />

have undergone agricultural, industrial or urban development. Because of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

differences,various management approaches areemployedat <strong>the</strong> differentsites.<br />
