The mission ofthe System is the establishment andmanagement, through anequally-shared Federal-State cooperative effort,of anational system of estuarine research reserves representative of biogeographical regions and estuarinetypes in the UnitedStates. Nationalestuarineresearchreservesareestablishedto provideopportunides for long-termresearch, educationand interpretation. Scientific and educational programs are particularly focused on the development of information for improved coastalmanagement decisionmaking. 761
