truth data. An annotated map of <strong>the</strong>ir study sites on <strong>the</strong> Choptank<br />

River Indicated <strong>the</strong> status of SAV from 1982 to 1984. Annotated aerial<br />

photographs for 1985 gave species information for <strong>the</strong>ir study sites in<br />

that year.<br />

In addition to <strong>the</strong> aforementioned surveys, citizen volunteers<br />

participated in identifying SAV beds by checking areas in <strong>the</strong> Bay for<br />

SAV. The Maryland Charter Boats Association participated in <strong>the</strong><br />

effort, funded by <strong>the</strong> Maryland DNR's Watermen's Assistance Program.<br />

Boat captains were provided with reduced SAV quadrangle maps and data<br />

sheets for each SAV bed identified on <strong>the</strong> maps. SAV samples were<br />

Identified to species on site or sent to <strong>the</strong> DNR for identification.<br />

Citizens also volunteered to assist in <strong>the</strong> SAV ground survey under<br />

guidance of <strong>the</strong> Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), Citizens Program for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Chesapeake Bay (CPCB), and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (F&WS).<br />

This program entailed identifying and recording <strong>the</strong> location of SAV in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Bay, using an identification guide of SAV and maps of <strong>the</strong>ir area<br />

of interest. Each volunteer was asked to identify <strong>the</strong> location where<br />
