Harvest figures for <strong>the</strong>se fishes admittedly are not ideal gauges of<br />

abundance, owing to o<strong>the</strong>r types of mortality in o<strong>the</strong>r waters, climatic<br />

factors and cycles, etc., but <strong>the</strong>y are seen popularly and politically as<br />

representative of <strong>the</strong> Bay's decline. Harvest (commercial and<br />

recreational) figures for 17 major species are available, by region or<br />

river basin, dating back to 1929, and earlier in some cases. (Bonzek and<br />

Jones, 1982)<br />
