pica is a gateway to the most daring visions of today. the artists we support each year become the feature stories
in next year’s sunday Times, and the dialogue we initiate shapes the course of contemporary art regionally, nationally,
and internationally. the present is always exciting for pica. right now, that means a new artistic director,
a new home, and planning for our next year, the tenth year of the tBa festival. To seize this moment, I ask you
for your support. Your donation directly supports PICA as we continue to present the defining artistic voices of
our time.
OFFICE
309
While we bid farewell to Guest artistic director cathy edwards and thank her for three fantastic festivals, we
now welcome angela mattox as our resident artistic director. angela moved to portland after eight years at yerba
Buena center for the arts in san francisco, where she revitalized their presenting program as performing arts
curator. there she worked with an eye focused on experimental practice, cross-cultural exchange, and interdisciplinary
work. her strong curatorial vision, passion for the explorations of artists, and her commitment to
bridging new communities make angela a great fit for portland and pica.
after nearly a decade in Wieden+Kennedy’s headquarters, pica will make our new home in the iconic orange and
turquoise building at 415 sW 10th. neither a black box performance space nor a white box gallery, pica’s new
office will be an incubator for those who create and a platform for those who discuss the art that defines our time.
this space will provide a focal point to our shifting activities, but still support our itinerant programming, as we
reach out into the community to build new audiences and find the right forum for each project.
pica is the home of true believers: a staff and Board that routinely accomplishes the impossible, artists who
refuse to be defined by tradition or custom, and supporters who know that their commitment can change the
world. pica is your voice, insisting that art is not just relevant, but vital to understanding who we are, where we
come from, and where we are heading. your support funds artist residencies and commissions, it allows us to
host student groups and subsidize free programs, and it enables us to reach into communities where art is not
merely decorative, but transformational. in supporting pica you affirm your commitment to what you believe
today and ensure that the promise of tomorrow is fulfilled.
Please consider making a gift today. there is no more important time for pica than now!
an invitation from the artistic director
i write this note during a time of discovery and new beginnings—from establishing a
new home in portland and getting to know the extraordinary pica family, to envisioning
a bold new future for the organization. the tBa festival was the perfect introduction to
pica in its most robust, frenetic, and celebratory manifestation. i was deeply inspired by
the fierce commitment and passion of the staff and by the generosity of the people who
volunteered to create an extraordinary convergence of potent ideas and human expression.
from this experience, i’m filled with new ideas and a pervasive sense of optimism
for our work.
next year, tBa:12 marks the 10th anniversary of this unique platform and i’ve been reflecting
on its history and impact. i’m interested in the accumulation of memories and
legacies, the experiences that stick with us, and the artistic moments that we just can’t shake after all these years. to
build long-term relationships between artists and audiences, i’d like to invite back some past tBa artists who are
developing compelling new work. yet, even while this process of reflection honors memory and the past, i will firmly
position next year’s programs to shed light on the world we live in and push us to anticipate the future.
i believe strongly in pica’s mandate to be on the leading edge in supporting a new generation of artists who are taking
risks in their work, and reflecting our present moment onto new futures. there are already a few projects that we’re
working to bring to tBa:12. the artists are extraordinary and the concepts they’re exploring mirror epic themes in
society today: democracy, freedom of speech, and activism, as well as more intimate concerns surrounding the home
and the poetics of the everyday. these are broad, global themes, and i’m passionate about bridging our local community
to an international conversation, situating pica in a crucial cultural dialogue.
But like this conversation, pica expands far beyond the festival platform. pica is an organization driven by a belief
in the vital force of experimentation and imagination to make change and reflect what it means to be a human in today’s
times. it’s a concept that connects creativity and community. our intention is to develop programs that will exist
beyond their culmination in tBa. how can pica be a generative force throughout the year, a fulcrum for art and ideas
outside of the festival framework? i’m excited to explore programs that prioritize the creative process, one-on-one
interactions with artists, and delve deeper into their ideas and practices.
the work isn’t complete without your response to it, without your engagement. as i think of artists to invite to portland,
i consider how this work will resonate here and now in this community. Will it be meaningful? Will it provoke us
to think or act? Will it linger with us? i’m thinking about how we can create intimate and meaningful opportunities to
bring you closer to the work and the artists behind it.
throughout the coming months, i encourage you to talk to me about your experiences with pica and the last decade
of the festival, to spend time in our space and help to shape our new home, and to meet artists who are developing
new work that we will present. come and join artists, thinkers, provocateurs, and fellow audience members to engage
with art, ideas, food, and drink. i look forward to getting to know you and this extraordinary community as together
we welcome in a new moment for pica.
angela mattox, artistic director
It is so important to have institutions like PICA that are flexible, nimble, and
responsive to the needs of both artist and audience, and who are willing to take
chances, and put the work of emerging, local artists in the context of national and
international, visual and performing arts conversations. To us, PICA is people.
