YOUNG LEADERS SOCIETY
The individuals who actively participate in The Young Leaders Society
(YLS) believe in leading by example. Our mission is to promote and facilitate
a spirit of philanthropy and civic mindedness among
the young leaders in our area. We want to give back to
our community financially, volunteer, and learn about
the agency programs and the people we are helping.
We find satisfaction in being part of the solution,
and we enjoy doing it together.
No matter your title, your volunteer experience,
or your education level, YLS is for people
with a shared goal: to do good works in
the community while learning from and
supporting each other. All you have to
be is someone who wants to help and
have fun.
MISSION: To promote and facilitate a spirit of philanthropy and civic
mindedness among the young leaders of South Hampton Roads.
The Young Leaders Society provides a variety of opportunities to meet other
individuals with similar community and professional interests.

WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP COUNCIL
In spite of a soft economy in 2010, the Women’s
Leadership Council (WLC) continued to accomplish
our mission of encouraging women to become
philanthropists through contributions to the United
Way and to the WLC Endowment Fund.
The WLC Board revised our Strategic Plan to guide
our thoughts and actions for the next three years.
WLC is an organization that funds solutions to the
root causes that affect the lives of women and
their families. Our members are actively involved
in making the South Hampton Roads community a
better place for all.
In April of 2011, the WLC hosted a new kind of Spring
Program - a poverty simulation designed to help
our members understand the difficulties of living
with poverty. Experiencing first-hand the dilemmas
and hardships caused by a shortage of resources,
insufficient education, and limited access was eyeopening
and motivational for all.

While the statistics of women and children in
poverty are daunting, we know that if you reach a
mother and change her life, you can change the
life of the family. Teach a mother and
you will impact the entire family. We
are heartened by the work that has
occurred through the programs we
have funded and we will continue
to fund those solution-oriented
programs for women and their
families focusing on self-esteem,
self-sufficiency and long-term
economic stability.
The need is there. As
competent and resourceful
women, we have much to share.
Let’s step up and do our part.
The gift of YLS members’ time and dollars impacts thousands across
South Hampton Roads. We have increased our membership
and raised over $1,000,000 for our community! As we
move forward, we are proud of our accomplishments
and anticipate the good YLS will do this year. Our
mission is to help everyone “Stay Connected and
Stay Involved!”
Your calls, e-mails and presence at our events
help to ensure we foster and grow YLS. For
2011, we will be looking to narrow our focus to
more quality events, provide more networking
opportunities, and volunteer projects.
With new opportunities in mind, 2011 will
be a successful year.
