Finding ways to measurably improve the quality of life in
South Hampton Roads is a critical part of Pilot
Media Companies’ mission. When
we learned that 23%
of adults and 16% of
children living in the
U.S. have untreated
dental cavities, we
decided to partner with
our local United Way
to close the gap in this
unmet health care need.
Dental health has ramifications far beyond the
pain of a cavity. Cavities and gum disease cause
infections that can affect other parts of the body,
including damaging the heart. Untreated dental
disease can even cause a miscarriage. Other illnesses,
such as diabetes, contribute to and complicate dental
problems.
Our shared goal with United Way is to provide a cost
effective, results based service that improves the lives of
people without dental care. United Way in collaboration
with Access Partnership brings together partners including
volunteer dentists and the U.S. Navy Dental Corps with their
two mobile dental vans.
As a funder, we stay involved; we meet quarterly with United
Way and strategize on ways to expand the service. Partnering
with United Way has been a great opportunity.
LIVING UNITED
MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Dear Friends,
Sheree Holloway came to one of our
morning oral health clinics needing
eight teeth removed. As an older adult,
complications from diabetes and lack
of dental health care left her with continuous
pain in her mouth. Even in pain
she was proud to share that she had not
missed a single scheduled work day in
her sixteen years of employment at a local
restaurant. After removing the first six teeth
volunteers noticed her crying and asked if
she was in pain. She shook her head no and
stated she was grateful because, for the first
time in years, she was NOT in pain. True to form, that afternoon,
Sheree went to work at her scheduled time and walked home afterward as she
always did. Over the next few months she was fitted with dentures and now smiles without
embarrassment or pain.

What happens in South Hampton Roads matters to all of us. When a child or
elderly person is hungry, when an abuse victim has nowhere to go, when a child
needs extra guidance and support to get through school; United Way has partnered
with us to create solutions.
United Way of South Hampton Roads’ goal is to create lasting change in the lives
of our community members so problems are prevented from occurring in the
first place.
Its sole purpose is to serve the needs of our people of South Hampton Roads
by bringing together people who want to help, because working together is the
best way to make lasting change. Local volunteers both raise dollars and decide
where to spend those dollars to accomplish the most good.
We invite you to be a part of changing lives by giving and volunteering through
United Way of South Hampton Roads. Together we can inspire hope and create
opportunities for a better tomorrow.
