WHAT WILL BE YOUR LEGACY?
As the 2011 Chair of the Board of Trustees United
Way of South Hampton Roads Foundation and a
member of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society, I know
first-hand the importance of annual giving to United
Way and the good that the funds do for families and
children in our community.
Each generation builds on the values of the preceding
one. It is imperative that our commitment to the
United Way, its agencies, and the whole concept of
community solution fund-raising and program support
be extended into the future. It’s never too soon
to begin estate planning. By remembering United

the Foundation’s Investment Committee during

IN HONOR OF MISS ELIZABETH “LIZZIE” GILLESPIE
LOCAL EDUCATOR AND LEGACY SOCIETY MEMBER
In her will, Miss Elizabeth “Lizzie”
Gillespie made a special provision
for United Way (formerly the
Norfolk Community Chest) and for
60 years the Elizabeth Gillespie
Trust has provided annual income
in support of the key focus areas
of education, financial stability and
health.
A native of Principia, MD, and born
on September 18, 1862, Miss Gillespie
moved to Norfolk to take her
first teaching position at the Norfolk
College for Young Ladies on College
Place at Granby Street.
In 1895, she joined the public
school system as a science teacher

and taught at Norfolk
High School for
16 years.
In 1911, she transferred
to Maury High
School as Head of the
Science Department.
She planned the original
layout of Maury’s
science laboratories
and equipment. She
was a member of the American Association
for the Advancement of
Science (1921) and served on the
Virginia Junior Academy of Science
Committee.
During her 48 year career in public

This past year the performance for funds pooled
returned 10.94% enhancing grants for many
critical, high impact programs and providing additional
support for United Way’s goal areas of
education, financial stability, and health.

education, she was
recognized as “a tremendous
worker and
quite a wit” by her
students and fellow
teachers. During the
Great Depression local
schools struggled
with crowded classes
and too few teachers,
but Miss Gillespie was
rated as an excellent
teacher. She is credited with Maury
students achieving good records in
college science courses.
Miss Gillespie’s legacy is warmly remembered
and genuinely appreciated
by all in our community.
