Finding ways to measurably improve the quality of life in 

South Hampton Roads is a critical part of Pilot 

Media Companies’ mission. When 

we learned that 23% 

of adults and 16% of 

children living in the 

U.S. have untreated 

dental cavities, we 

decided to partner with 

our local United Way 

to close the gap in this 

unmet health care need. 

Dental health has ramifications far beyond the 

pain of a cavity. Cavities and gum disease cause 

infections that can affect other parts of the body, 

including damaging the heart. Untreated dental 

disease can even cause a miscarriage. Other illnesses, 

such as diabetes, contribute to and complicate dental 

problems. 

Our shared goal with United Way is to provide a cost 

effective, results based service that improves the lives of 

people without dental care. United Way in collaboration 

with Access Partnership brings together partners including 

volunteer dentists and the U.S. Navy Dental Corps with their 

two mobile dental vans. 

As a funder, we stay involved; we meet quarterly with United 

Way and strategize on ways to expand the service. Partnering 

with United Way has been a great opportunity. 

LIVING UNITED 

MAKES A DIFFERENCE 

Dear Friends, 

Sheree Holloway came to one of our 

morning oral health clinics needing 

eight teeth removed. As an older adult, 

complications from diabetes and lack 

of dental health care left her with continuous 

pain in her mouth. Even in pain 

she was proud to share that she had not 

missed a single scheduled work day in 

her sixteen years of employment at a local 

restaurant. After removing the first six teeth 

volunteers noticed her crying and asked if 

she was in pain. She shook her head no and 

stated she was grateful because, for the first 

time in years, she was NOT in pain. True to form, that afternoon, 

Sheree went to work at her scheduled time and walked home afterward as she 

always did. Over the next few months she was fitted with dentures and now smiles without 

embarrassment or pain.

What happens in South Hampton Roads matters to all of us. When a child or 

elderly person is hungry, when an abuse victim has nowhere to go, when a child 

needs extra guidance and support to get through school; United Way has partnered 

with us to create solutions. 

United Way of South Hampton Roads’ goal is to create lasting change in the lives 

of our community members so problems are prevented from occurring in the 

first place. 

Its sole purpose is to serve the needs of our people of South Hampton Roads 

by bringing together people who want to help, because working together is the 

best way to make lasting change. Local volunteers both raise dollars and decide 

where to spend those dollars to accomplish the most good.

United Way is about changing the 

lives of those we walk by every 

day. Our work bolsters the lives 

and improves the living conditions 

of those closest to us— our 

families, friends, colleagues and 

neighbors. It is South Hampton 

Roads’ “community chest” in the 

truest sense. 

In spite of rising gas prices, 

and other changes in the economy, 

you continued to give to 

United Way of South Hampton 

Roads, and I thank you for your 

generosity. 

The majority of our efforts go to children’s needs — 

from the basics of food and shelter, to education, 

mentoring, and after school programs. Many are 

surprised to learn the average age of a homeless

One of life’s great gifts is the fact 

that we can wake up every morning

something meaningful. By joining

ability to make a difference is so 

person is nine. Thus, many of our 

programs aimed at helping children 

entail helping their parents secure a 

stable income and family life. 

Our other areas of work include 

programs for our neighbors who 

are disabled, those who suffer from 

long term illnesses, or elderly neighbors 

who have become frail and 

homebound.

HOW YOUR MONEY HELPS 

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A CERTIFIED AGENCY

Executive Director 

First, it means scrutiny, the volunteers who review our audits and other 

financials are careful about letting an agency use the United Way logo. 

It means the donor can be assured that we have been reviewed for both 

our governance and financial practices. 

But it means so much more for our agency. Edmarc was founded as a 

children’s hospice. We help children with catastrophic or terminal illnesses 

and their families through a difficult journey. Being part of the 

United Way of South Hampton Roads gives us a way to let families in 

need know about our services. It gives us an opportunity to recruit volunteers 

who care about our cause…and it gives us the funds to provide 

a great service to our children and families. 

We are a small agency, we don’t have development staff; what we do 

have is a great United Way that makes our jobs so much easier. 

MEAGHAN’S STORY 

No parent expects to 

outlive their child. 

When the Herrity 

family learned that 

their 14-year old 

daughter Meaghan 

had an aggressive 

cancer, they were 

stunned and unprepared 

for the journey 

on which they 

would embark. Like so many of 

our parents, they struggled with 

the word ‘hospice’, but allowed 

Edmarc Hospice for Children to 

provide a service full of people 

with love, comfort and even 

laughter. 

Teaching her family how to care 

for Meaghan added quality to her 

life; providing emotional support 

for every family member allowing 

them to focus their attention on 

Meaghan and add quality to the 

time they had left with her. 

When Meaghan relapsed and her 

treatment was suspended, Edmarc 

helped her family make the 

heartbreaking transition from

aggressive medical 

treatment to making 

Meaghan comfortable. 

In Meaghan’s Mom 

and Dad’s own words: 

“The Edmarc staff 

helped Meaghan understand 

what was 

happening with her 

body and as a result 

of their knowledge and compassion, 

Meaghan was never afraid. 

Edmarc also ensured that our 

needs were addressed and as a 

result of their support, we were 

able to function as a complete 

family amid the pain. Because 

of Edmarc, Meaghan’s last days 

on this earth were filled with dignity, 

love and grace.” 

“After Meaghan died, Edmarc 

provided a grief counselor. Even 

now Edmarc is still part of our 

lives and continues to provide 

grief counseling services and 

sends us cards on Meaghan’s 

birthday and Angel Day, letting 

us know that she will never be 

forgotten.”

holistically. We want our children 

to be safe and have activities that 

encourage the educational, emotional 

and social growth necessary 

to become productive citizens. We 

want to meet the basic needs for 

our most vulnerable citizens and 

to improve lives by moving individuals 

away from service dependent 

lives to self reliant lives. For those 

who physically cannot, our goal is 

to help them live to their greatest 

potential and enjoyment. 

Our Strategy: 

First: We support a safety-net of

assurance that future needs can 

be met as the individual works

Second: We support an array of 

programs that work with individuals

HOW EARLY CAN YOU PREDICT A CHILD’S FUTURE? 

It’s not as mysterious as it seems. The brain is the 

least developed organ at birth. By age five around 90 

percent of a child’s brain growth is complete. Scans 

of the human brain show us that children who aren’t 

played with much or are rarely touched develop brains 

that are 20 to 30 percent smaller than normal. Child 

abuse actually disrupts the normal formation, or development, 

of a child’s brain; leaving the child vulnerable 

to learning disabilities, behavioral problems and 

self- destructive behavior. 

Once in school, if the child hasn’t mastered reading by 

the end of third grade chances are high that they will 

not graduate from high school. 

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Safe, secure

SIGNATURE LEADS WITH FINANCIAL STABILITY COALITION 

In 2009, we faced foreclosures all 

around the region, job losses, and 

every day families struggling to 

sustain their standard of living. We 

were fortunate to have visionary 

leaders who focused on the needs 

of others in the midst of this economic 

storm. 

Signature, under the leadership of 

Anne Shumadine, Randy Webb and 

Susan Colpitts, made the unprecedented 

move to give United Way 

one of their own Financial Planning 

staff members, Lori Irwin, to 

work full time to create a 

Financial Stability Coalition between 

the two partners and the 

community. 

With the keen insight and bold 

leadership of Signature, the Financial 

Stability Coalition has made 

dramatic impact in leveraging 

other corporations and volunteers 

LOCAL VOLUNTEERS EMPOWER WOMEN 

At a local United Way supported Domestic Violence Shelter, women are 


taking the knowledge from our Financial Literacy Classes and creating 

their own financial futures. Many have opened personal saving and 

checking accounts as well as begun practicing money saving tips. 

A Child’s Brain Under Construction Won’t Wait 

to provide training resources to 

agency staff and individuals. This 

resulted in people having the tools 

to understand budgeting and financial 

responsibility. 

Because of their efforts the following 

services have been provided: 

• Financial Mentoring: Providing 

volunteer partners to families enduring 

financial stress and teaching 

them how to establish a financial 

plan for future sustainability. 

• Financial Education: Providing 

classroom training to people of 


all ages from pre-school to senior 

communities. 

• Virginia Saves: A social media 

marketing effort to increase savings 

across our region and the 

state. 

• Volunteer Income Tax Assistance: 

Offering hard working members of 

the community an opportunity for 

free tax assistance to keep more 

money in their pockets.

COMBINED CHARITIES CAMPAIGN A SUCCESS 

The Combined Charities Campaign is planned and run each year by municipal 

and school system employees. In addition to administrators, teachers, 

and support staff, the school campaigns also include funds raised by local 

students at their respective schools. 

Last year, more than 16,000 South Hampton Roads City and School System 

employees contributed more than 1.6 million dollars to local charities. In 

addition, more than $140,000 was raised by local students.

The individuals who actively participate in The Young Leaders Society 

(YLS) believe in leading by example. Our mission is to promote and facilitate 

a spirit of philanthropy and civic mindedness among 

the young leaders in our area. We want to give back to 

our community financially, volunteer, and learn about 

the agency programs and the people we are helping. 

We find satisfaction in being part of the solution, 

and we enjoy doing it together. 

No matter your title, your volunteer experience, 

or your education level, YLS is for people 

with a shared goal: to do good works in 

the community while learning from and 

supporting each other. All you have to 

be is someone who wants to help and 

have fun. 

MISSION: To promote and facilitate a spirit of philanthropy and civic 

mindedness among the young leaders of South Hampton Roads. 

The Young Leaders Society provides a variety of opportunities to meet other 

individuals with similar community and professional interests. 

CAROLYN ABRON-MCCADDEN, 2010/2011 CHAIR 

WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP COUNCIL 

In spite of a soft economy in 2010, the Women’s 

Leadership Council (WLC) continued to accomplish 

our mission of encouraging women to become 

philanthropists through contributions to the United 

Way and to the WLC Endowment Fund. 

The WLC Board revised our Strategic Plan to guide 

our thoughts and actions for the next three years. 

WLC is an organization that funds solutions to the 

root causes that affect the lives of women and 

their families. Our members are actively involved 

in making the South Hampton Roads community a 

better place for all. 

In April of 2011, the WLC hosted a new kind of Spring 

Program - a poverty simulation designed to help 

our members understand the difficulties of living 

with poverty. Experiencing first-hand the dilemmas 

and hardships caused by a shortage of resources, 

insufficient education, and limited access was eyeopening 

and motivational for all.

While the statistics of women and children in 

poverty are daunting, we know that if you reach a 

mother and change her life, you can change the 

life of the family. Teach a mother and 

you will impact the entire family. We

have funded and we will continue 

to fund those solution-oriented 

programs for women and their 

families focusing on self-esteem, 

self-sufficiency and long-term 

economic stability. 

The need is there. As 

competent and resourceful 

women, we have much to share. 

Let’s step up and do our part. 

The gift of YLS members’ time and dollars impacts thousands across 

South Hampton Roads. We have increased our membership 

and raised over $1,000,000 for our community! As we 

move forward, we are proud of our accomplishments 

and anticipate the good YLS will do this year. Our 

mission is to help everyone “Stay Connected and 

Stay Involved!”

help to ensure we foster and grow YLS. For 

2011, we will be looking to narrow our focus to 

more quality events, provide more networking

LIVING UNITED to me means realizing that as we go about our daily routines 

we are all a part of a larger community. The healthier and more vibrant that 

community the better our loved ones lives will be. There are times in all of our 

lives when we need help and other times when we can give it. 

I feel fortunate to be able to give help and can think of no better 

way to impact lives than through giving to United Way. Through 

the nearly 70 United Way agencies at work in our community 

we are helping with needs from early childhood education 

to assisting the elderly, health and education to homeless 

prevention and food supply. United Way advances 

efficient and low cost delivery of services. 

In taking philanthropic leadership a step further, engaging 

in the African American Leadership Society 

(AALS) provides members the fortune of profound 

community service. 

MISSION: To educate, inspire and engage African Americans around 

key human service issues that are important to us and to provide 

opportunities for recognition, networking and volunteerism.

MINORITY ADVISORY COUNCIL 

For 20 years the Minority Advisory Council (MAC), founded by the UWSHR Board of 

Directors has led by example in engaging members of the minority community to partner 

with us to address areas of concern in Hampton Roads. Comprised of 

community leaders, professionals and educators this group works 

to increase minority participation through philanthropy and 

volunteerism. 

In 1996 MAC founded the award winning Project Inclusion 

(PI) Leadership Development Program and in 2006, 

recognizing the need for a new generation 

of leaders, birthed the African American 

Leadership Society. If you are interested

MISSION: To serve as an advocate for inclusion within the community, and to build and promote 

cultural diversity within United Way, its certified agencies, and other non-profit organizations to

TRAY MOORE, 2011 CHAIR 

AFRICAN AMERICAN LEADERSHIP SOCIETY 

A new year brings new opportunities for the African American Leadership 

Society (AALS). While we still face economic challenges, we are continuing to 

increase our membership and strive to make real change for our community. 

This year we’ve piloted a new Step-Up Incentive Program to cultivate more individuals 

to join AALS. Those that want to make a difference now 

have the opportunity to grow their first year gift from the $500 

leadership level, to the required $1,000 level the following year. 

We will continue to concentrate efforts on education and 

have joined The Corporate Mentor Challenge posed by First 

Lady Michelle Obama and United Way Worldwide put forth 

to the nation in January. Our goal is to engage our members 

to become dedicated mentors in the next three years. 

AALS currently partners with our local agency, ForKids, 

and will work toward ensuring our youth transition 

from Middle School to High School, and beyond.

The Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) of 

South Hampton Roads is one of many CFC’s 

across the country and overseas involving 

Federal civilian employees, postal workers, 

and our military who choose to donate to more 

than 2,000 local, national, and international 

charities. This year CFC celebrates their 50th 

year of helping charities around the world. 

Locally, the campaign raised $4,663,446.00. 

Special congratulations to Dorassa L. Fields 

from Norfolk Naval Shipyard on being a 2010 

CFC Hero! As one of ten recipients for this 

national award, Dorassa lead more than 8,000 

employees to raise more than $741,000.

As the 2011 Chair of the Board of Trustees United 

Way of South Hampton Roads Foundation and a 

member of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society, I know 

first-hand the importance of annual giving to United 

Way and the good that the funds do for families and 

children in our community. 

Each generation builds on the values of the preceding 

one. It is imperative that our commitment to the 

United Way, its agencies, and the whole concept of 

community solution fund-raising and program support 

be extended into the future. It’s never too soon

In her will, Miss Elizabeth “Lizzie” 

Gillespie made a special provision 

for United Way (formerly the 

Norfolk Community Chest) and for 

60 years the Elizabeth Gillespie 

Trust has provided annual income 

in support of the key focus areas 

of education, financial stability and 

health. 

A native of Principia, MD, and born 

on September 18, 1862, Miss Gillespie 

moved to Norfolk to take her 

first teaching position at the Norfolk 

College for Young Ladies on College 

Place at Granby Street. 

In 1895, she joined the public 

school system as a science teacher

and taught at Norfolk 

High School for 

16 years. 

In 1911, she transferred 

to Maury High 

School as Head of the 

Science Department. 

She planned the original 

layout of Maury’s 

science laboratories 

and equipment. She 

was a member of the American Association 

for the Advancement of 

Science (1921) and served on the 

Virginia Junior Academy of Science 

Committee. 

During her 48 year career in public
