more than 70 beaches spread along the
city’s coastline .
SIBT pathway to Macquarie University
SIBT provides an alternative pathway to Macquarie University and Macquarie City Campus for
Australian and international students who may not qualify for direct entry and seek a supportive study
environment . SIBT offers a range of courses to suit your academic needs .
Certificate IV in University
Foundation Studies
(NTIS 51879)
The Certificate IV is a foundation course
that will prepare you for success at
diploma level . The Certificate IV consists
of 8 units, which upon completion, will
guarantee you entry into a SIBT diploma
program . The Certificate IV is suitable for
students who do not meet the academic
or English requirements to advance
directly to diploma .
Mixed English Option
This option allows you to combine your
English language studies with your
Certificate IV in University Foundation
Studies course . It is suitable for students
with an IELTS score of 5 .0 (or equivalent) .
Diploma
SIBT diplomas consist of 8 units that are
the equivalent to the first year of a
Macquarie University bachelor degree .
Upon successful completion of a diploma
you will advance directly to the second
year of a relevant Macquarie University
bachelor degree .
Commencement Dates
Provisional Entry Program
If you have an IELTS of 5 .5 (plus the
required academic score), it is possible
to begin your diploma studies at SIBT on
a Provisional Entry Program . In the first
semester at SIBT you will take 2
academic diploma units in addition to
studying a required Culture and Learning
unit . This unit focuses on academic
literacy and study skills and upon
successful completion you will move
to full diploma status . You will complete
the remaining 6 academic units over
2 semesters .
Advanced Diploma
SIBT at Macquarie University and Macquarie City Campus
Students are awarded an advanced
diploma upon successful completion of
12 units . This includes the SIBT diploma
(8 units) plus an additional 4 units .
These additional units are equivalent to
the first semester of second year at
Macquarie University . You will be offered
a place in the advanced diploma if you
commence your studies in October . This
is because Macquarie University does
not offer classes between October and
February and the advanced diploma is
designed to allow students to continue
their studies at SIBT during this period .
Students who enjoy the SIBT learning
environment can also choose to continue
studying the advanced diploma .
Associate Degree
The Associate Degree in Business is a
two-year, higher education program that
consists of 16 units and is the equivalent
to two years of a Macquarie University
degree . Upon completion you will
advance to the third year of a Bachelor of
Business Administration . The associate
degree is suitable for students who wish
to continue enjoying the benefits of
studying their degree program in a more
supportive learning environment .
A day in the life of a SIBT student
Siti Nuramirah Mohamad Fazwi, Malaysia
Diploma of Commerce
Activity
8:00am I wake up around 7am and take the fantastic new train to Macquarie University station . During my 20-minute trip
I revise my accounting lecture notes before class . Accounting is one of my best subjects and my goal is to be an
Accountant (which is why I chose Macquarie – it is famous worldwide for Accounting!) . I grab a coffee and a bagel
from the SIBT ‘Globe Café’ before heading to class .
11:00am I have finished the first 3-hour block of an Accounting lecture of the day (we also have breaks in this time) . The
lecturer was very clear in her teaching, she explained the theory well and gave practical exercises so we could further
understand what she was teaching . I am now heading to my tutorial for the same unit, which will go for about an hour .
My tutor is super friendly and very knowledgeable – he’s currently doing his CPA, and I can ask him anything I need to .
12:00pm Lunchtime! So much choice… I usually choose between the food court on campus or going across to Macquarie
Centre, which has over 250 shops and restaurants . Today I choose the food court on campus as I am meeting my
lovely SIBT friends in the central courtyard . There are five of us in the group – from Korea, Australia, China and India .
There’s amazing diversity at SIBT and Macquarie, around 100 different nationalities, so I have made a lot of friends
from all around the world . I have Thai vegetable rice for lunch and we talk about our upcoming tests and when we
are going to meet next for study group .
1:00pm The next class is ISYS104 (Computing) . Every week we have a quiz at the beginning of the class so the lecturer
knows if we have understood last week’s lecture . It’s great revision for me! The lecturer always makes the class very
interesting and lively . He also usually explains what we are going to learn in practical class so this makes it so much
easier when we get into this next class . In this unit, I have learnt how to use Excel, Microsoft Word and even how to
build a website from scratch!
6:00pm Class is over and I’m really excited because there is a Malaysian Club BBQ on at Macquarie University Village . I love
meeting new people and the students who come along are actually from everywhere – not just Malaysia . It’s a good
mix between typical Aussie BBQ food, sausages and steak, and Malaysian food, mee goreng and curry puffs . I meet
Sally, an Australian girl who is studying a Diploma of Communication at SIBT . She is really friendly and we make plans
to meet up for a coffee next week .
9:00pm I say goodbye to everyone and catch the train back to my apartment . I revise today’s lesson and quickly fall asleep!
I want to get up early tomorrow to go to the gym at Macquarie University’s Sport and Aquatic Centre after all the
delicious food I’ve eaten today!
Tora Brophy, Australia
Diploma of Commerce, SIBT
ACST101
In this semester I designed my timetable to study two units at the City and
two units at North Ryde. The campus at North Ryde has a huge range of
facilities, and this combined with the smaller classes and quiet, modern
learning environment in the City make my study lifestyle both convenient
and always interesting! Next semester I’ll continue to study at both
campuses as it makes university life more diverse and I can get more out
of my time here by experiencing the advantages of both locations.
succeed at university in another country. As it turned
out it was the right decision because I learnt essay
Student visas
The SIBT advantage – one visa
for all your studies!
SIBT can provide you with one visa for
the entire duration of your studies . This
includes your SIBT course, Macquarie
University bachelor degree and English
tuition (if required) . All you need to do
is complete the SIBT application form
and we will organise everything .
What should I know about
an overseas student visa?
Applying for a student visa
Prospective international students
intending to study in Australia must
obtain a student visa from an Australian
Diplomatic Mission in their home country
before embarking for Australia . Visa
regulations must be met before a student
visa is issued and these vary from
country-to-country .
A SIBT representative will be able to
assist you in applying for a visa .
To apply for a visa you will first require:
• A Letter of Offer from SIBT .
• A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
issued by SIBT after the respective
fees and charges have been paid .
• A medical check-up as required by
immigration regulation .
• Proof of financial support as required
by immigration regulation .
• Citizens of certain countries may need
to obtain a Pre-Visa Assessment from
the Australian Diplomatic Mission
before making any payment to SIBT .
How long is my visa?
Your student visa will be issued for the
duration of the SIBT course as stated in
the CoE that you will receive from SIBT . If
you plan to continue your studies at
Macquarie University or Macquarie City
Campus, SIBT will issue a CoE for both
your SIBT and university courses .
Can I work while I study?
Permission to work in Australia will be
granted as part of the student visa . You
can work up to 20 hours per week while
studying and full-time during the
semester breaks . The income earned
from part-time work is not adequate to
cover study and living costs .
Are there visa conditions?
Whilst studying in Australia students
MUST abide by visa conditions as
determined by the Department of
Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) .
These include:
• Complete course within the duration
specified in the CoE .
• Maintain satisfactory attendance and
course progress .
• Have sufficient funds to cover course
fees and living expenses while in
Australia .
• Students who wish to change
education provider before completing
the first 6 months of their principal
course must obtain a release letter
from their institution and submit an
application to DIAC . If the visa package
includes both SIBT and Macquarie
University/Macquarie City Campus,
the principal course is the Macquarie
University degree .
• Students must inform DIAC if they
change their student status or
withdraw from the course they are
enrolled in .
• Students must extend their student
visa before it expires .
• Students are required to advise SIBT of
changes to their Australian address
within 7 days .
Do I need Overseas
Student Health Cover?
It is a visa condition that all overseas
students obtain Overseas Student Health
Cover (OSHC) for the proposed duration
of their time in Australia . If you have an
accident or health problem you will be
able to redeem some, or all of your
medical costs .
SIBT will organise one policy for the
duration of your SIBT and Macquarie
courses and English studies at CME or
Navitas English (if required) . Costs are
outlined on page 38 .
year of a Macquarie University degree.
is that it’s located at Macquarie
