The victory was the Lakers' 18th straight and improved GVSU to 75-5 in its last 80 games. In addition, Grand Valley State improved to 48-3 in its last 51 GLIAC games. Wayne State, which falls to 3-2 overall, entered the game with a 3-0 GLIAC mark. Grand Valley State took the opening kickoff and drove 73 yards in 10 plays for a 22-yard field goal by Todd Carter to put the Lakers up 3-0. Junior linebacker Matt Beaty forced a Warrior fumble that Derrick Jones recovered. GVSU went 28 yards in seven plays before Carter booted a 27-yard field goal. Sean Roland picked off a pass by Wayne State quarterback Trent Pohl and returned it 33 yards to the WSU three-yard line. QB Cullen Finnerty hit WR Terry Mitchell with a two-yard TD pass to put GVSU up 12-0. The Laker defense forced a Warrior punt on its next possession and Finnerty drove the Lakers 61 yards in five plays before hitting WR Antione Trent with a 12-yard TD pass. Carter added the PAT to put GVSU up 19-0 with 1:06 left in the first quarter. The Lakers rolled up 169 yards of total offense, while WSU was limited to 25 in the first quarter. GVSU also held the ball for 10:10 of the opening stanza. "I'm pleased with our effort today and the way we played 60 minutes of football," said third-year head coach Chuck Martin. "Wayne State is a talented football team and I felt we had a good week of preparation and focus on the game. We came out ready to play and started fast with 19 first-quarter points," added Martin. Wayne State got on the board when Joique Bell concluded a nine-play, 78-yard drive with a three-yard TD run at the 3:41 mark of the second quarter. GVSU went into its two minute offense and Finnerty drove the Lakers 47 yards in nine plays before Carter booted a career-long 43-yard field goal with no time remaining in the first half to give GVSU a 22-7 lead. Grand Valley State forced a Wayne State punt on its opening possession of the second half and the Lakers were able to gain good field position following a 26-yard punt. GVSU drove 48 yards in five plays as Finnerty hit WR Terry Mitchell with a 13-yard TD pass to increase the lead to 29-7. Wayne State drove 95 yards in 13 plays as Bell rambled in from 21 yards out. The two-point conversion pass was picked off by Brandon Carr. Mark Catlin returned the ensuing kickoff 43 yards to the WSU 38-yard line and the Lakers drove 38 yards in eight plays for a TD. Finnerty hit Eric Fowler with a four-yard TD pass and Carter added the PAT for a 36-13 Laker lead. Finnerty completed 18-of-29 passes for 187 yards and four touchdowns. The victory was the Lakers' 19th straight, extending the nation’s longest winning streak in NCAA college football. GVSU, which improves to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in GLIAC action, will hit the road for a GLIAC contest at Indianapolis next Saturday (Oct. 14). Senior QB Cullen Finnerty hit senior WR Eric Fowler with a 43-yard TD pass to open the scoring for Grand Valley State. Astin Martin scored the first of his three first half TDs at the 8:28 mark of the first quarter to culminate a seven-play, 77-yard drive. Mercyhurst scored its only points of the first half on a Phil Scanlon 39-yard field goal with three ticks left on the clock in the first quarter. GVSU then scored 28 second quarter points. Fowler hauled in a 19 yard pass from Finnerty and Martin scored from 6 yards out to put the Lakers up 28-3 with 6:52 left in the first half. Junior receiver Jaquon Morrison sprinted 66 yards for a TD to finish a four-play, 80-yard drive. Martin finished the scoring with a two-yard TD run with 13 seconds left in the first half to up the GVSU lead to 42-3. "I thought we came out ready to play," said third-year head coach Chuck Martin. "We showed great balance offensively and the defense played well despite having several starters out," added Martin. The Laker starters, both on offense and defense, sat the entire second half, but the Lakers kept the pressure on early. Morrison opened the third quarter for GVSU with a 51-yard TD scamper to up the lead to 49-3. Mercyhurst scored two TDs for the final margin of 49-17. Jaquon Morrison rushed for 113 yards and two TDs on just four carries, while Astin Martin toted the ball 10 times for 62 yards and three TDs. Finnerty completed 13-of-16 passes for 210 yards and two TDs, while rushing five times for 50 yards. Freshman Brad Iciek completed 4-of-7 passes for 85 yards. Fowler caught three passes for 101 yards and two TDs, while Ryan Bass hauled in a career-high four passes for 85 yards. Terry Mitchell and Antione Trent each caught three passes. The Laker offense rolled up a season-high 568 yards of total offense, including 416 in the opening half. GVSU rushed for 273 yards and passed for 295.
