The shutout was GVSU's first since the 2004 campaign when the Lakers claimed a 34-0 win over Wayne State. In addition, GVSU has shutout Findlay in each of the last two meetings between the schools. The Lakers claimed a 44-0 win in the final game of the 2003 season at Donnell Stadium. Grand Valley started in fine fashion with an impressive scoring drive on its second possession of the game. QB Cullen Finnerty hit senior WR Eric Fowler with a 21-yard TD pass at the 9:04 mark of the first quarter. Todd Carter added the PAT to give the Lakers a 7-0 lead. The season's first touchdown culminated a 4-play, 49-yard drive that took 1:54. GVSU took over its next possession on its own 1-yard line and drove 89 yards in 12 plays. Carter connected on a 26-yard field goal to give the Lakers a 10-0 lead. "I thought we looked good offensively in the first quarter, but then we just kind of lost our way in the second quarter," said third-year head coach Chuck Martin. "We started moving the ball again in the third quarter, but then we gave it away with a couple of turnovers. The defense bailed us out tonight and we need to find a way to get better on the offensive side of the ball," added Martin. Findlay picked up its initial first down of the contest at the 12:13 mark of the second quarter. Neither team was able to score in the second stanza. GVSU tallied 244 yards of total offense in the first half, while Findlay was able to muster just 78 yards, 32 of which came in their final drive of the first half. The Lakers ran 44 offensive plays, compared to Findlay's 28. The Lakers turned the ball over twice in the third quarter in Findlay territory. The Oilers picked off one pass in the Laker endzone and one inside the GVSU 20 yard line. GVSU continued to dominate defensively and the offense put together a scoring drive midway through the fourth quarter. Carter connected on a 28 yard field goal to conclude a 14-play, 60-yard drive that took 7:18 off the clock. The Laker defense held Findlay to just 161 yards of total offense. Findlay gained 32 yards in the final drive of the first half and 64 yards in its final two drives in the fourth quarter. The Oilers rushed for 91 yards on 35 carries and completed 10-of-21 passes for 70 yards. Senior defensive tackle Derrick Jones tallied nine tackles and three tackles for loss (-5), while Anthony Adams chipped in nine tackles of his own. Senior all-american Mike McFadden extended his consecutive games streak with a QB sack to 14 with 1.5 quarterback sacks (-10). McFadden also became the all-time leader in QB sacks in Laker history with 30.5. Joe Huhn was tied with McFadden at 29 heading into the game. GVSU notched 15 tackles for loss (-40 yards) and six QB sacks (-26). "Our defense was outstanding and they did a great job of stopping a quality running back in Michael Simpson," stated Martin. "We had a bunch of guys flying to the ball and that is what I like to see." Offensively, Astin Martin rushed for 125 yards on 26 carries, while Finnerty completed 16-of-35 passes for 219 yards and one TD. Fowler led the receiving unit with four catches for 75 yards and one TD. Terry Mitchell caught three passes for 38 yards. Freshman punter Justin Trumble averaged 43.0 yards on six punts and Carter converted both field goal attempts. GVSU improves to 2-0 both overall and in GLIAC action, while Ashland falls to 0-2. Ashland tied the game with a big play of its own when QB John Ferguson hit Troy Rice with a 67-yard pass and catch to tie the game at 24-24 with 7:26 left. Ashland faced a third and 10 before the TD. However, the Lakers went 74 yards in seven plays to pull out the win. GVSU converted two key third downs on the winning drive. The first was an 11-yard completion from Finnerty to Fowler on a third-and-six. The second was the deciding play in the game. Finnerty scrambled right, nearly had his helmet ripped off on a face mask penalty, and he then turned to the left. Finnerty readjusted his helmet and then hit Fowler, who had snuck behind the Ashland defense on the scramble, with a 47-yard strike. Todd Carter missed the PAT wide right and GVSU held a 30-24 lead. "You never stop on a play because Cullen (Finnerty) just keeps plays alive," said Fowler. "He always finds a way to make someone miss and he is at his best when things break down," added Fowler. The Laker defense then stiffened and held the Eagles on a third and eight play to force a punt. GVSU was able to pick up a first down on third-and-two to seal the win. "I am really proud of this team because they just keep fighting," said head coach Chuck Martin. "The offense made a play when it needed one and the defense just found a way to hold Ashland on that third down," added Martin. Ashland dominated the opening quarter, recording 160 yards of total offense to build a 10-0 lead. GVSU's first points of the game came at the 12:02 mark of the second quarter when junior LB Matt Beaty tackled Bill Cundiff in the end zone for a safety. GVSU then drove 56 yards in 12 plays following the free kick. Finnerty scored from three yards out and Carter added the PAT to pull GVSU within one (10-9). Grand Valley State took its first lead of the game with an 8-play, 76-yard drive for a TD. Finnerty scored his second TD of the game, this one coming from one yard out to give GVSU a 16-10 lead. "The defense was able to get us going with the safety and then the offense picked it up," said Martin. "We put together two nice scoring drives." GVSU held Ashland to four yards of total offense in the second quarter on 10 plays. Ashland forced a Laker punt on its first possession of the second half and then drove 45 yards in 10 plays for the score to take a 17-16 lead. GVSU came right back with a 5-play, 70-yard scoring drive of its own that Astin Martin culminated with a 5-yard TD run. The big play of that drive was a Finnerty to Fowler 50-yard pass play. Finnerty converted the two-point play to give the Lakers a 24- 17 lead. Finnerty completed 12-of-19 passes for 200 yards and one TD. Astin Martin added 121 yards and one TD on 20 carries. Martin has now rushed for more than 100 yards in 11 of 15 games played. Eric Fowler caught seven passes for a career-high 155 yards. Buster Larkins and Ryan Gaydosh each tallied eight tackles. Matt Beaty and Dan Skuta each collected a pair of sacks and Mike McFadden kept his streak of consecutive games with a QB sack alive with a sack in the fourth quarter. McFadden has now recorded a sack in 15 straight games.
