2003 <strong>Football</strong> National Champions<br />

The Laker football team returned to Florence, Alabama for the third consecutive<br />

season, but for the first time attempting to defend the title. The story<br />

had changed from the previous year, in 2003 the Lakers were led by Scott<br />

Mackey, Keyonta Marshall, Lucius Hawkins and the rest <strong>of</strong> an impressive<br />

defensive unit as they ended the season with six consecutive road wins to<br />

win claim their second national championship.<br />

Grand Valley avenged its 2001 championship loss to North Dakota by<br />

defeating the Souix in a defensive battle by a score <strong>of</strong> 10-3. Mike Tennessee<br />

scored the games only touchdown, while the defense held North Dakota to<br />

only a field goal.<br />

2002 <strong>Football</strong> National Champions<br />

The 2002 national championship team is considered one <strong>of</strong> the best teams<br />

in Division II football history. Curt Anes, David Kircus and Reggie<br />

Spearmon led an unstoppable <strong>of</strong>fense under the direction <strong>of</strong> head coach<br />

Brian Kelly.<br />

David Kircus racked up an incredible 270 yards and three touchdowns on<br />

his way to an MVP performance against Valdosta State (Ga.) to complete<br />

the Lakers run to earn it’s first national championship. The Lakers finished<br />

the season with a perfect 14-0 record.<br />

Brian Kelly was named AFCA Coach <strong>of</strong> the Year. Curt Anes was voted the<br />

Haron Hill winner, while a total <strong>of</strong> seven Lakers were listed as All-<br />

Americans.<br />

Individual National Champions<br />

Mandi Zemba - 8-time National Champion<br />

In the last race <strong>of</strong> her collegiate career, Mandi Zemba claimed her eighth<br />

national championship, seven <strong>of</strong> which were individual titles. Zemba claimed<br />

the title 5000m race in dominating fashion, finishing 48 seconds ahead <strong>of</strong> the<br />

second place finisher.<br />

Zemba won her first national championship at the 2002 outdoor championships<br />

in the 1500. She won the cross country individual national championship<br />

in 2005, followed by outdoor titles in the 3000 and 5000 in 2006.<br />

During the 2007 indoor season, Zemba claimed titles in the Distance Medley<br />

Relay and the 5000. In addition to her 5000 title during her final NCAA<br />

Championship, Zemba dominated the field and claimed the national title in the<br />

3000. After claiming four national championships during her senior season,<br />

Zemba finished as one <strong>of</strong> the most decorated women’s track performers in<br />

NCAA Division II history.<br />
