Winona, Minn. - The Grand Valley State Laker football team lived to play<br />

again Saturday with a 16-13 come from behind victory Saturday at Winona<br />

State. GVSU (9-2) has now won nine straight play<strong>of</strong>f games and its senior<br />

class improved to 50-4 in their careers. The Laker win also snapped a 25-game<br />

home field winning streak for Winona State. Grand Valley State has now won<br />

25-<strong>of</strong>-its-last-26 road games.<br />

Grand Valley State built a 9-0 halftime lead on three Scott Greene field<br />

goals, one in the first quarter and two in the second. The third was a 24-yarder<br />

with eight seconds left in first half. Winona State dominated the third quarter<br />

and scored a pair <strong>of</strong> TDs. All-american receiver Chris Samp hauled in an 18yard<br />

TD pass from Ryan Eversman to pull the Warriors within a 9-7 margin.<br />

Winona State took their first lead <strong>of</strong> the game with a 7-play, 79-yard drive that<br />

running back Alex Wiese ended with a 2 yard run. The Warriors failed on the<br />

two-point conversion attempt and led 13-9.<br />

Grand Valley State's game-winning drive started at 14:44 mark <strong>of</strong> the fourth<br />

quarter when the defense forced a WSU punt. Mark Catlin returned the punt<br />

five yards to the GVSU 41 yard line to start the dive. Sophomore QB Cullen<br />

Finnerty hit freshman receiver Demonte Collins for 16 yards to pick up a key<br />

third and nine play. Following a a holding pentalty Finnerty hit Collins again,<br />

this one covering 19 yards to the WSU 31 and a Laker first down. Finnerty then<br />

took over with runs <strong>of</strong> three and 15-yards to the Warrior 13. Finnerty rambled<br />

in from nine yards out to conclude the drive and give the Lakers a 16-13 lead.<br />

Each team punted in the closing minutes before Winona State had one last<br />

chance with a drive in the closing minute. However, a 45 yard field goal<br />

attempt as time expired was short and left.<br />

The Laker defense was stellar in the opening half, limiting WSU to 123<br />

yards <strong>of</strong> total <strong>of</strong>fense, including -4 rushing yards on 18 carries. GVSU turned<br />

in a key couple <strong>of</strong> plays in the first quarter when they held the Warriors on a<br />

fourth and one play from the GVSU one yard line to thwart a 10-play, 80-yard<br />

drive. Anthony Adams led the GVSU defense with 13 total tackles and two<br />

tackles for loss. DeJuane Boone added eight tackles, while Michael McFadden<br />

chipped in eight tackles, four tackles for loss (-21) and a QB sack (-8). Lucius<br />

Hawkins picked <strong>of</strong>f a pass and returned it 29 yards to go along with his six<br />

tackles. GVSU tallied 15 tackles for loss and four QB sacks.<br />

The Laker <strong>of</strong>fense tallied 247 total yards, including 135 via the ground.<br />

Senior Michael Tennessee rushed for 100 yards on 23 carries and moved to<br />

within 45 yards <strong>of</strong> the GVSU all-time rushing record. Tennesse has 3,323 yards<br />

in his career. Finnerty completed 10-<strong>of</strong>-20 passes for 112 yards and rushed for<br />

40 yards and a TD on 16 carries. Collins hauled in five passes for 87 yards.<br />

Midland, Mich. - Grand Valley State used a tough running game, combined with an<br />

incredible defensive effort against the run to claim a 10-7 NCAA DII play<strong>of</strong>f victory<br />

in Midland, Michigan. Grand Valley State captured its 10th straight play<strong>of</strong>f win,<br />

including six straight away from Lubbers Stadium. The Laker senior class also tied<br />

an NCAA DII record with its 51st win (51-4) in a four-year periord. Pittsburg State<br />

was 51-4 from 1989-92.<br />

Grand Valley State and Northwood punted a combined nine times in the<br />

opening half. GVSU drove to the Northwood 20 on its opening possession, but QB<br />

Cullen Finnerty was hit as he was throwing the ball and Trevor Howard picked it <strong>of</strong>f<br />

and returned it 48 yards. The Timberwolves scored on a 70 yard pass play from Kyle<br />

Kolbe to Robert Height early in the second quarter to take a 7-0 lead. The Lakers<br />

drove 41 yards in 10 plays before Scott Greene came up just short on a 43 yard field<br />

goal. GVSU took the opening drive <strong>of</strong> the second half and drove 42 yards in 11 plays<br />

before Greene nailed a 36 yard field goal. Northwood's second possession <strong>of</strong> the second<br />

half resulted in three plays and a punt traveled just 12 yards to the Laker 37 yard<br />

line. QB Cullen Finnerty hit WR Brandon Langston on a flag pattern that resulted in<br />

a 37 yard TD pass and a Laker 10-7 lead. Grand Valley State used time consuming<br />

drives that took nearly 10 minutes <strong>of</strong>f the clock in the fourth quarter. The Lakers<br />

used the final 3:12 <strong>of</strong> the game with an 8-play, 34-yard drive that ended the game.<br />

The Laker defense was dominent the entire game, but even more so in the<br />

second half. Northwood was forced into three plays and a punt in four <strong>of</strong> six second<br />

half drives. NU was limited to 48 yards <strong>of</strong> total <strong>of</strong>fense on 25 second half plays.<br />

Senior RB Michael Tennessee rushed for 80 yards on 27 carries and in the<br />

process became the Lakers' all-time leading rusher with 3,503 yards. Tennessee<br />

moved past Reggie Spearmon's total <strong>of</strong> 3,467 yards. Finnerty rushed for 75 yards on<br />

16 carries as the Lakers tallied 176 yards on 51 carries. Finnerty completed 10-fo-<br />

21 passes for 116 yards and one TD. Langston caught nine passes for 107 yards and<br />

a TD. GVSU converted 6-<strong>of</strong>-18 third downs. Laker punter Matt Regnery punted<br />

seven times for a 41.1 yards per punt average.<br />

The GVSU defense limited Northwood to 174 yards <strong>of</strong> total <strong>of</strong>fense, 70 <strong>of</strong><br />

which came on Northwoods lone score <strong>of</strong> the day. Northwood came into the game<br />

averaging nearly 350 rushing yards per game and was limited to a season low 51<br />

yards on the ground. GVSU also held a 37:33 - 22:27 time <strong>of</strong> possession advantage.<br />
