The No. 2 ranked Lakers were well on their way to a 42-14 victory over Bloomsburg (Pa.)
in a first-round Division II playoff game at Lubbers Stadium when they gathered around
injured quarterback Curt Anes as he was being placed on a trainer’s cart at the 50-yard line.
“We decided we were going to do this for Curt,” junior wide receiver David Kircus said.
“He’s carried us all year long. I saw Curt at halftime and it brought a tear to my eye to see
him in so much pain.”
Anes injury was diagnosed as a dislocated left knee. He was taken to Saint Mary’s
Hospital for further evaluation.
Redshirt freshman Todd Wojciechowski took over and guided Grand Valley to two secondhalf
touchdowns as the Lakers (11-0) completed the first playoff win in school history.
The Lakers will host Saginaw Valley State (11-1) next Saturday in a rematch of Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams. The Cardinals, who lost to Grand Valley 38-7 on
Sept. 8, rallied to beat Indiana (Pa.) 33-32 Saturday.
Anes is one of eight finalists for the Harlon Hill Award, presented annually to Division II’s
top player. He had 48 touchdown passes and ran for five TDs in the regular season and made a
major first-half contribution to Saturday’s victory by throwing a 10-yard pass to Kircus and
running 29 yards for another score.
Running back Reggie Spearmon scored on 1, 1, and 4 yards for Grand Valley. He rushed
for 94 yards, complementing the passing attacks that saw Kircus finish with eight receptions
for 172 yards.
Defensive back Darren Smith returned an interception 35 yards for Grand Valley’s first
touchdown. The Lakers’ defense shut down Bloomsburg in the second half as linebacker
Clarence Lindsay and safety Dustin Cole finished with 10 tackles each.
“We lost to a fine football team.” Bloomsburg coach Danny Hale said. “I am really saddened
by Anes’ injury. He’s a real leader, I’d like to see what (Grand Valley) could do with
him throughout this playoff.”
The Lakers, playing in their first postseason game in three seasons, had been 0-5 in
Division II playoff contests.
“If our defense continues to play the way it plays, we feel we can keep playing this game
for a national championship,” Kelly said.
